Tim Shand heads a dynamic, progressive young winemaking team at this James Halliday five star-rated winery. The property was founded on site of the St. Huberts Vineyard planted in the 1860s by Paul and Hubert de Castella - some of the first vines in the Yarra Valley and one of the cornerstones of Australian fine-wine tradition.

All these years later, Tim and the team bring restless perfectionism to this intimately understood site and its mature vines. With vintages under his belt at Domaine Dujac in Burgundy and Château Margaux in Bordeaux, as well as stints in Chianti, Oregon and Chile the Punt Road wines have never been better. PWS

There’s a lot of thought goes into making wines at Punt Road. Tim Shand is something of an alchemist in the winery.

Red fruit, some fennel, also quite smoky too. It delivers a good amount of flavour with fine chalky tannin, a little drying, but with strawberry in a lipstick mouth sweetness to temper, along with brown spices and dried herb. A nice bit of complexity, and some grip on a solid finish. It’s drinking very well now, which is good news too. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front
