The gold digging areas of Great Western Victoria are home to the countries Great cool - climate wine regions. With a growing number of new project wineries, working with alternative varieties and non-conservative blends, the regions are redefining themselves quickly. The diversity of soils and altitude are amazing fodder for a winemaker with imagination and talent.
The Bio Maverick Hochkirch based in Henty makes serious, small quantity riesling. A.Rodda comes out swinging again with a splendid Beechworth Chardonnay, he's a gun the bigger cats need to watch out won't steal their limelight sooner rather than later. Fighting Gully Road is the baby of respected viticulturalist Mark Walpole’s. He works with the traditional strong suits of the region but is also playing with Italian varietals to good effect. It wouldn't be a gold digger pack without an entry from the Rat. There isn't any need to introduce Giaconda, moving on. Appellation is made from the master Father and Son duo at Eastern Peake. Old clay soils, fruit from 40year old vines, make up the extreme entry level wine. Finally, there’s Tessa Brown with her excellent and exciting stable of wines under the Schmolzer and Brown label.
