Fighting Gully Road Smiths Vineyard Chardonnay 2019
DOZEN: $918.00 or $76.50 each
Mark Walpole and Adrian Rodda share a winemaking space in the old Mayday Hills Asylum in Beechworth. They also both share the loot from the Smiths Vineyard - the region's oldest vines dating back to 1978. This is Mark's label, though it's clear to see Rodda's magical influence has rubbed off a little in this wine.
A reverberating core of citrus, brioche and hazelnuts unfurls, delivering layers of flavour. This powerful wine is energised by a long salivating line of acidity that carries the intensity, forming a silky tail and incredible length. There's some clever winemaking work here but the old intense vines of Smiths Vineyard are still the nucleus of the wine. GABRIELLE POY, PWS
From vines planted in '78, fermented and matured for 18 months in new and used French oak, partial mlf. The power, intensity and depth of the wine comes from the low yield of these venerable vines. JAMES HALLIDAY
