This is the second edition on Barolo from Alessandro Masnaghetti, who may know more about Barolo's vineyards than anyone else alive.

Today, we all know far more about Barolo and its vineyards, thanks to Alessandro Masnaghetti's tireless work in mapping every square meter of the region's vines.

By providing unprecedented detail on vineyard soils, slopes, exposure and ownership, his commune-by-commune maps have become an essential source for those thirsting for more knowledge on Italy's greatest red wine.

Alessandro's work has been praised by journalists and publications ranging from Jancis Robinson and John Gilman to the Wine Spectator, which recently profiled him. It's no wonder his have been called the finest maps of vineyards ever created.

This year, Alessandro will make us all even more knowledgeable, as he publishes his first reference book on the region: Barolo MGA, The Barolo Great Vineyard Encyclopedia.

He calls the book “a true, impartial, detailed, and documented photograph of the official recognized great Barolo vineyards.” But of course it is much more than that. It is a compilation of all the information he has unearthed over the past 20 years, as he unlocks the mysteries of why Barolo's soil produces such profound wines.

As for putting it into book form, that took a full eight years. And the result is a handsome 408-page, hardcover volume that should grace the library of anyone who loves Barolo.

    Encyclopedic in its Scope
Barolo MGA includes more than 200 3-D images of the region's vineyards; 11 in-depth analyses of the individual communes; 170 fact sheets on each cru and a directory (with contact information) of growers and producers. In addition a glossary demystifies over 800 place names, brand names and historic zones. Just one edition is being published, with text in both Italian and English.
