The 2013 Extra Brut Les Chemins d'Avize Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru is floral and gracious, much more so than is common in Avize Champagnes, which tend to have more body. The 2013 is beautifully perfumed and ethereal from start to finish, with striking beams of salinity that confer tension. Candied lemon peel, white flowers, spice, hazelnut, dried flowers and chamomile are some of the many notes that are laced together. This subtle, wonderfully nuanced Champagne has so much to offer. The 2019 Haut-Brion is seriously impressive. A dark, virile wine, the 2019 impresses with its vertical energy and statuesque elegance. It's a Haut-Brion that will only reveal itself over many years. Today, the density and resonance are super-impressive and also hugely promising. Classic savory and mineral notes start to emerge over time. I can't wait to see how this ages. Antonio Galloni 98

The 2019 Haut-Bailly was picked 23 September to 10 October. After 10-15 minutes in the glass the wine gradually unfurls to reveal beautiful red berry fruit, crushed stone, wilted rose petals and faint hints of blueberry. The palate is quite brilliantly balanced, the tannins extremely fine and framing the slightly earthy black fruit laced with salt. Though Véronique Sanders suggests that it bears a semblance to the 2009 with more depth, I cannot see that verisimilitude. To me, it is a less flamboyant and more terroir expressive Haut-Bailly that has an effortless allure and a sense of sophistication. Wonderful. Neal Martin 96-98

The 2009 Haut-Bailly has a very pure bouquet with blackberry, liquorice, hints of star anise and boysenberry jam, opulent and vivacious, a little glossy perhaps? The palate is medium-bodied with very supple and lithe tannin matched with a fine bead of acidity. Lovely balance here, fine tension with a insistent grip, layers of black fruit laced with cedar and graphite towards the very Pauillac-like finish. Superb. The 2018 Barde-Haut is a powerful wine, but it is also rather closed. That won't be an issue in time; the 2018 needs quite a bit of air to show all of the rich, layered fruit readers have come to expect from this Saint-Émilion. Succulent dark cherry, chocolate, new leather, espresso and sweet spice build into the rich, layered finish.

The 2009 Haut-Brion has a less precocious but more detailed bouquet, more nuanced perhaps with warm slates baking in the summer sun, tilled loam and cedar infusing the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, perfect acidity, layers of mineral-rich black fruit. This seems to have gained more complexity in recent years and is beginning to flirt with perfection. The 2019 Haut-Brion Blanc simply has it all; energy, texture and striking aromatics all race across the palate. I would be in no rush to open the 2019, as it needs time. Today, it is the wine's pure richness and depth that are so impressive. Hints of orchard fruit, white pepper, slate, lemon confit, dried flowers and chamomile build over time. Fortunate to escape the hailstorms of May 26th, Haut Bailly enjoyed a season that could be acted upon through glorious summer and autumn conditions. Still, crops are 50% less than 2017 and Veronique Sanders and her team have crafted a very intense and concentrated wine from their small crop. -Tom Portet

The 2018 Haut-Bailly soars out of the glass, showing magnificent poise that only grows with time. Sweet, perfumed aromatics, silky tannins and mid-weight structure add to its considerable allure. Ripe red berry fruit, spice, blood orange, licorice, cedar, tobacco and menthol are all woven together in an effortless, classy Haut-Bailly that delivers the goods. I suppose the 2018 doesn't quite have the explosive energy of the very best years, but it more than makes up for that with its sensual, seductive personality.

Full-bodied, rich and densely laden with layer upon layer of vibrant black fruits and mineral nuances, it has a solid backbone of firm, velvety tannins and seamless freshness, finishing very long with compelling restraint and exciting energy.

The 2009 Smith Haut-Lafitte has a very perfumed, quite floral bouquet with violets permeating the black and red fruit, hints of game and leather developing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. Touches of brown spice filter through the red fruit and towards a fleshy and lightly peppered finish. This is a classy Pessac-Léognan from the Cathiard's...though, the 2016 is better! Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting. Neal Martin 94

The 2019 La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc, formerly known as Laville Haut-Brion of course, is complex on the nose with peach skin, orange blossom and honeysuckle aromas gently unfolding with each swirl. As usual with this wine, it only really begins to "sing" after an hour's aeration (something I can afford to do at home and not when tasting at the château.) The palate is poised and vibrant on the entry. Notes of orange rind, melon and white peaches dovetail into a more resinous, textural finish that fans out gloriously. This is outstanding, but one worth cellaring as it will repay bottle age. Neal Martin 98

The 2020 Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Demi-Sec is clear, pure, subtle, deep and fresh, with highly refined chalky/sandy lemon aromas. Rich and intense yet silky textured and refined on the concentrated palate, this is a juicy, highly elegant, perfectly balanced, persistently salty and mouth-salivating Haut-Lieu with very fine tannins and a long, firm and pretty powerful but elegant and complex finish. Still more stringent than the Le Mont Demi-Sec in the beginning, but after aeration, this is not just a greatly finessed Chenin but one of the finest Haut-Lieu's I have tasted from Huet. The 2019 Smith Haut-Lafitte was cropped at 36hl/ha, undergoing manual pigeage and maturation in 60% new barrels for a planned 18 months. It has an intense, very pure bouquet with blackberry, briary and cherry compote and a hint of black olive tapenade in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins that frame the pure, mineral-infused black fruit. Undercurrents of graphite and black olive surface towards the complex finish that I feel is less opulent but maybe more sophisticated than recent vintages of this top performer. Very elegant and refined, this is an outstanding success for winemaker Fabien Teitgen and his team. Tasted twice including samples direct from the château. Neal Martin 96-98

The 2018 La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion has really blossomed since I tasted it in barrel. The bouquet is very pure and perfumed, featuring shimmering red berry fruit, briar, undergrowth and a touch of peppermint dallying in the background. The palate is very well balanced with smooth tannins, very nicely pitched acidity and a subtle marine note toward the finish. This is just plain delicious.

Bursting with aromas of cherries and berries, the 2018 Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Rouge is medium-bodied, supple and fleshy, with an enveloping core of ripe fruit, tangy acids and melting tannins. It's a touch rounder and more gourmand than the racier 2017. WILLIAM KELLEY, wineadvocate.com

The 2020 Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune "Altitude" includes 50% whole bunch this vintage. Dark berry fruit, touches of undergrowth (damp moss on an autumn day), this is beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit on the opening, fine acidity, a little spicier towards the elegant finish. Vivid and energetic. NEAL MARTIN, vinous.com

 

The 2020 Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune "Clous 377" (again, note the small name change) is matured in regular Burgundy barrels that are one-year old. You have to spend a little time with this wine to watch it unfurl in the glass: pure redcurrant, cranberry and raspberry scents, quintessential Pinot Noir. The palate is slightly granular in texture on the entry, very saline and lightly spiced, good intensity on the finish with a tingle of white pepper on the aftertaste. Excellent. Richer purple than En Bignon 421, Le Clou 377 is more peppery, both are more powerful than 'Altitude'. Sweeter fruit, richer and riper. Another lovely pinot, with 70% whole bunches and slightly riper grapes. Really a question of stylistic choice between this and En Bignon. JASPER MORRIS MW

The 14th century estate has a wonderful following in Australia, and 2018 is not a time stop that support. This blend is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, while notes on the iconic white wine can be found below. -Tom Portet

This is incredibly complex with hazelnut, currant, berry and dried-flower character. The impression of a vat of fermenting cabernet. Full body, round and juicy tannins and a long, soft and silky finish. Shows the essence of the fruit here. Fascinating. Layered and complex.

The very deep purple-black colored 2018 Smith Haut Lafitte is a little shy to begin. With coaxing, it very slowly unfurls to reveal a heart-stopping perfume of violets, red roses, kirsch, black cherries and redcurrant jelly, before giving way to a profound core of warm blackcurrants, blackberry preserves, molten licorice and cinnamon stick with nuances of dried mint, orange blossoms (yes!) and cloves. Full-bodied, the fruit does veritable pirouettes on your palate, both elegant and powerful in its expression, coating the mouth with densely packed red and black fruits while revealing tons of mineral, floral and savory sparks, framed by exquisitely fine-grained tannins and bold freshness, finishing very long.

Matured in 500-litre barrels, this was slightly reduced on the nose when I tasted it with Boris Champy, but there is clearly fine concentration here. The palate is well balanced with lightly spiced, pretty red fruit on the entry. Harmonious, silky smooth with cranberry and wild strawberry on the finish, this is a lovely Hautes-Côtes but it will need 12-18 months in bottle. NEAL MARTIN, vinous.com

The vinous evolution of Italy has been nothing short of astonishing in the past decade or so. It is almost a moot point it seems to talk about these days. Regardless, we are always excited to see the latest producer slide across the desk and just as stoked to see the newest vintage of our favourite winemaker's land in store. More recently we have been fortunate enough to forge some great relationships with new estates who have quickly become our go to bottles when drinking with friends and family.

What's even more impressive is the diversity of styles coming out of Italy with an array of wine to suit any situation from light, fresh and crunchy; rich, deep and concentrated and to everything in between. There seems to be a bottle for any occasion from backyard BBQ's, to long lunches and just something easy to wash down a bit if pizza on a Wednesday night.

This pack has a little bit of everything for everyone no matter what you are into!

Farina Pinot Grigio 2020

Farina of Veneto was founded in the early 1900s with a passion and desire for producing the highest quality wines possible from the Veneto region. Cousins Claudio and Elena Farina; now 3 generations are responsible for continuity of the Farina tradition and focus on quality production. Farina is located in San Pietro in the heart of the Valpolicella Classica; the historical and original Valpolicella. Claudio and Elena own 10 hectares of their own vineyards and source fruit from long standing grower partnerships which encompass a further 70 hectares under vine. This opens with a nice little lift of ripe peach, apple, floral notes and a hint of flinty stone shimmering around the edges. The palate has some nice plump fruit with a streak of minerally freshness that runs through the middle. Its on the heavier side of light and the fact that it comes off a combination of volcanic, alluvial and calcareous soils lends it a lot of complexity especially for a wine at this level. 100% steel tank means it remains beautifully vibrant. Lots of appeal here and very versatile

Ca Erto Soave 2020

This Soave is from the 'Classico' zone in the heart of the region, and is composed of mostly local variety Garganega, with just splash of Trebbiano. The team at Ca Erto utilise a combination of both modern and traditional techniques to coax the most out of their wines. It's all about purity of fruit and freshness here which they deliver in spades. This vintage is on the lighter side of Soave but in saying that it lacks nothing in flavour and packs a punch in the value stakes. Fresh cut peaches and green apple with a touch of white pepper spice lead into a bright but delicate nose. Plenty of zippy fruit darts around the palate. The palate is clean and clear, vibrant and snappy with a little green hazelnut twang on the finish. Delicious stuff and we be you will be coming back for more after you try this.

La Dama Vini Valpolicella Classico 2020

Established by Gabriele and Miriam Dalcanele in 2006, La Dama represents the new breed of winemakers in the region. Modern, fresh yet compelling wines coaxed from organically farmed vineyards in the fabled commune of Negrar, home to some of the great names including the legendary Giuseppe Quintarelli. Their 10 hectare estate has been certified organic since 2015 and works only with the native varieties of Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and Molinara. Oak influence is kept to a minimum in order to ensure the vineyard speaks for itself in the glass. This looks so pretty in the glass with red currant, raspberry, a touch of Sichuan spice with a lovely lifted and fragrant and nose. There is a touch more flesh and richness then the 2019's and some very fine tannins that give this a little more edge to the wild red fruits. A touch of wild herbs at the end also hang out in the background of the nose and give this a little extra bit of complexity. Really nice form on this one.

Le Marie Dolcetto d'Alba 2020

The winery "Le Marie" comes from the passion for winemaking of the owner Valerio, his wife Luigina, and their children Simona and Daniele. The result are wines of personality, pure and elegant, produced in limited quantity and in respect of the territory, with environmentally friendly practices. The ten hectares of vineyards are between 400 and 450 meters. The land is rich in minerals that give the wines great structure and wonderful nuance. Packed full of up-front blue and red fruits laced with peppery spice and vanilla. The palate is pliant and soft with a little nervy energy that flows through the red raspberry and currant fruit. A soft little snap of tannin that buttresses the sweet fruit nicely adds a little extra complexity. This is perfect trattoria fair and super versatile on the dinner table.

Santadi Vermentino Villa Solais 2020

The Sulcis peninsula is, geographically, Sardinia's most ancient area, rich in archaeological sites, and offers an astonishing palette of variations and contrasts, with coastal sand dunes, gentle hills and inlets, narrow strips of flatland and inland mountains, rugged cliffs overhanging the seas interspersed with silky-smooth white beaches, pine trees, junipers and vineyards. In these sandy soils, pre-phylloxera vines continue to survive and thrive. Made with 10% Nuragus, another local variety, this spends a few months maturation on lees, in stainless steel, to give the wine an extra dimension of flavour and texture. Citrus notes and hints of tropical fruit with a zesty edge and a touch of green herb and sea spray. The palate is minerally and refreshing with clean pithy fruit and plenty of citrusy goodness. So easy to love and so hard to put down.

Scala Bianco (Greco) 2020

Calabria's best known wine region is Cirò, extending from the Ionian coast to the eastern foothills of La Sila with the classico zone centred around Cirò and Cirò Marina in the province of Crotone. This is 100% Greco from the family's lowest vineyards, between 100 to 150 meters above sea level. The Greco type found in Calabria is distinct from the one of the same name in Campania. Fermented and aged in stainless steel to retain the its crisp and crunchy edge. Hints of white flowers and lemon with a touch of citrus peel peak eagerly through the crunchy apple and tree fruits. There is a wonderful coastal vibe to the palate with more citrus and lemon a hint of underbrush that echoes the land its grown on. On the lighter side of medium this is the perfect wine for grilled or baked fish. Something grilled over hot coals you say!? Even better!

Umani Ronchi Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2020

The Bernetti's own over 200 hectares of prime vineyards in the Marche. Leading Piedmontese Oenologist Beppe Caviola heads the oenological team, having received a healthy legacy from retired consultant and Italy's greatest winemaker, Giacomo Tachis.  First made in 1977, this entry level Montepulciano is the ultimate value 'pizza wine', although it goes with just about anything. If you have not tried this wine you must have been under a rock. This is classic stuff and absolutely delicious! Typical plum and morello cherry leap out of the glass. The nose is airy and open with pure fruit and burnished spice elements. No oak whatsoever here, its all about unadulterated fruit backed by warm rich tannins to hold it all together. This IS Wednesday night wine if every we had one.

Stella Barbera Stravisan 2019

Paolo Stella is one quarter of the famous 'Erpacrife four' but his day job is winemaker for the family's estate in Costigliole d'Asti, in the heart of Monferrato about halfway between Alba and Asti. The Stellas' twelve hectares of vineyards grow the full range of varieties found in this part of Piedmont. The level of quality across the board is exceptional here and all beautifully balanced wines promoting structure and finesse. Barbera Stravisan is lively and juicy and made without oak. Barbera Bricco Fubine Il Vino del Maestro, dedicated to Paolo's great grandfather, is from half a hectare of the Fubine cru, planted on sandy calcareous soil and perfectly situated facing due south. Aged in Slavonian casks for eighteen months, this has ripe red berry fruit with spicy aromas and aniseed and the palate is rich with beautiful texture and length.

Fontaleoni Vernaccia di San Gimignano 2019

The 2019 Vernaccia di S. Gimignano is an absolutely delicious, every day white. Apricot, tangerine oil, mint, chamomile and yellow flowers all grace this tasty, supple Vernaccia from Fontaleoni. ANTONIO GALLONI Bright and somewhat crunchy with a direct line of fresh apple like acidity. Plenty to enjoy here with all the usual elements you would want from Vernaccia of this quality, apple fruit, lemon oil and white flowers along with just enough texture to provide a little tactile interest. Poggio Dei Principi Sangiovese 2019

Made from Sangiovese cultivated in the area of Rubicone in Emilia Romagna. The soils in this region are a mixture of alluvial and glacial deposits (sand, pebbles and minerals), imparting a freshness of fruit not found in Sangiovese grown in other parts of Italy. Small yields and dedicated winemaking by this fantastic cooperative combine to produce a wine that is fresh, versatile and enjoyable. The perfume is fresh and fruity, with a floral and slightly herbal bouquet. Taste is fresh and juicy with cherry conserve characteristics and an earthy under-tow buttressed by the varieties firm tannins. A pizza/pasta wine if ever we tried one and bang on for the money.

One of the standouts of the vintage, the 2015 Sociando Mallet is all finesse. Light on its feet, gracious and super-expressive, the 2015 speaks to class above all else. The flavors are bright and beautifully lifted in this polished, sophisticated Haut-Médoc. Although a touch light, the 2015 is very pretty. The 2009 Belgrave has a ripe red cherry, kirsch scented bouquet with hints of raisin and fig. It is just flirting with over-ripeness...but not over-ripe! The palate is medium-bodied with candied red fruit, a little chewy in texture and perhaps needing more mineralité on the finish. Yet, there is fine density and decent precision on the finish. HAUT-MÉDOC - 5th Growth

The 2016 Camensac is an equal blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, picked from 27 September until 18 October at 42 hectoliters per hectare. There is a pastille-like purity on the nose: blackberry, briary and a light floral note coming through with time. The quality of the vintage shows through on the palate, which is very harmonious and demonstrates both excellent backbone and intensity. It builds in the mouth, maintaining plenty of freshness and with a mineral-driven finish. This is an excellent Château de Camensac and fingers crossed it will represent great value in the market once released. (90-92) NEAL MARTIN

There is fantastic purity of black fruit with blackberries and ripe raspberries. Floral and bright. Full-bodied, compact palate with super polished tannins. Really fantastic.

The 2018 Sociando Mallet is magnificent. Deep, powerful and resonant, the 2018 has so much to offer. Black cherry, plum, leather, licorice, gravel, cloves, licorice menthol and chocolate meld together in a wine of real distinction. There is a real sense of density and textural resonance that makes the 2018 compelling. Stated simply, the 2018 Sociando is magnificent. Don't miss it. Tasted three times.

The golden-yellow 2009 Vouvray Le Mont Moelleux has a fascinating subtle and aromatic bouquet of perfectly ripe and gently stewed fruits intertwined with biscuit, confiture and caramel notes, as well as lemony flinty aromas. Smooth, round and very elegant, with great finesse and balance, this is a very piquant and salty moelleux with a persistent and aromatic, yet purely mineral and tension-filled finish. The 2009 is very stimulating also due to the delicate yet firm tannins. This is an age-worthy Chenin that is only slowly starting to unfold its charms. STEPHAN REINHARDT, The Wine Advocate

"Residual sugar 56.5 g/l, alcohol 12.6%, total acidity 5.14 g/l. A lovely nose here, deeper and more reserved than the Haut Lieu, although still fresh, youthful and floral. Note: from the very bottom of Rugiens-Haut. A firmly reduced nose does not allow any nuance to be appreciated. More interesting are the racy and almost painfully intense tautly muscular flavors that possess plenty of minerality that imparts a refreshing salinity on the linear, austere, compact and tightly wound finish. This excellent effort is a 'buy and forget you own it' wine that should age gracefully for years. 91-94 Sweet Spot, Outstanding. BURGHOUND

The 2018 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens has also turned out very well indeed, mingling aromas of cherries and red berries with hints of licorice, forest floor and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, bright and precise, it's mineral and fine-boned, reflecting its origins in the thinner, calcareous soils of RugiensHauts that have little in common with the iron-rich clays of Rugiens-Bas.
