Head Wines The Contrarian Syrah Marananga 2014 1500mlFrom Marananga and less contrarian than it used to be. Apparently men get more conservative as they age, and women become more radical, liberal.
Boysenberry and dark cherry, that exotic Chinese five spice thing going on, pastis and some dark chocolate. Medium bodied, fluid and smooth, with a crunch to the acidity and a gentle graininess to the firm tannin. Has some salt beef flavours in there that you see in a lot of modern Barossa Shiraz, though they don’t bother me so much in this wine. Needs a year or two to soften, like a good pair of jeans. Just over the line for a 94 point finish. GARY WALSH winefront.com.au May 2015

Dockyard G+T Pack
A pack containing the brilliant Dockyard Copper Rivet Gin and a 4 pack of Strangelove No. 8 Tonic. Summer is covered!
The distillery is a relatively new operation headed by Bob Russell and sons, Matthew and Stephen. It is unique in several senses but first off it is housed in a Victorian-era pumphouse in the now derelict Chatham Dockyard south of London. The dockyard was at one time of huge importance to the Empire building ships for the Royal Navy from Napoleonic times through to the Falklands. The pumphouse # 5 was used to pump out water for the dry docks. Russell saw an opportunity to revitalise a magnificent piece of English architecture, give some locals a job and indulge his passion for making bespoke spirits. To do this he decided to take the road less travelled in distilling and instead of buying in bulk spirit to make his Gin

Escondido Equilibrio Mei e Meio Red Blend 2015Escondido Wines is the project of Michael Wren who was a winemaker for one of Portugal's top producers, Esporao, before opening Wren Estate, based in Heathcote. Whilst running their Douro winery, Quinta dos Murcas, Wren sourced grapes from a brilliant vineyard, in the cooler Dao region to the south of the Douro. The Dao is marked by higher altitudes and heavy granite soils and for Wren this region is the true home of Portugal's best known red variety - Touriga Nacional. The Dao produces pretty, structured Touriga Nacional that is bright and blue fruited with fresh acidity with clear mineral notes.
The Escondido Meio e Meio comes from 2015 which was a very cool vintage, so this wine was very tightly wound when first botted but has opened up beautifully and is drinking wonderfully at present. Meio e Meio translates as half/half, referring to the composition of the wine. 50% Touriga Nacional and 50% Jaen (Mencia in Spain) which brings some balancing red fruit and tannin to the blend.

Le Moss Frizzante IGTThis is slightly cloudy Glera sparkling wine from the Piave region in Italy. Basically it's a Prosecco as it is made from all glera grapes but made in a pet-nat style and unfiltered so cannot legally call itself Prosecco. But honestly why would you care? This is such a fun wine to drink. We all screamed "picnic wine!" when we tried it. Hell yeah!
Wild yeast fermented with natural carbonation from secondary ferment in bottle there is lilting aroma of bread crust, Acacia flowers, apple, lemon & grapefruit pithiness. Extremely fresh with some chalky texture that reminds a bit of great scrumpy cider. Bone dry, totally fresh and totally delicious. Yum!

Scout Wines Pinot x Pinot 2021Sarah and Greg are making fantastic wines from New Zealand's south island where their approach to site, viticulture and picking along with their gentle way in the winery, see them creating pure and forward wines with subtle complexity. Continually questioning all aspects of grape growing and winemaking, as well as challenging established ideas and practices, have been key to this small producer establishing a trademark stance for quality above all else. This release is one of the best we have seen.
This is 90% Pinot Noir with 10% Pinot Gris-the two varieties are not often blended, but together they provide Scout with an ode to Beaujolais-resulting in a bright, light, crunchy and delicious red wine. It was sourced from two vineyards in Central Otago, both organically managed and harvested by hand. Components of this wine were allowed to undergo spontaneous carbonic maceration over 7-14 days. After this time, the grapes were foot-stomped and finished the ferment on skins. Once pressed, it was aged in old oak for six months before bottling in September.2019Pinot noirNew ZealandSpecial Price $28.00 Regular Price $35.00

White peach and crunchy tree fruits to the fore with a gently spiced, quartz/mineral nose. The palate is clean as a whistle with a core of sweet white fruits cut with bright, zippy acidity. Scout Wines Adelaide Hills Chardonnay 2017
No details to hand and a new outfit on me, but the wine is very good. Chardonnay from the Adelaide Hills.
Here we go. This has the crackle of quality. It's well fruited, is bursting with spice, has flint tucked into its shirt and fig slung around its neck. Acidity tears through the wine like a kid at a new bike. Flavour chases right on after it. This is one of those 'all we have learned' wines. Agathist Alchemy Second Wine Grenache 2016
100% Grenache, Seppeltsfield, Barossa
Agathist Alchemy is a label from Barossa Valley guru, Craig Isbel who is also one of the people behind Izway Wines. Here he produces two wines from a single vineyard located across the road from his family home. It is owned & farmed organically by vigneron Nick Radford. The wines are produced in small batches of no larger than 500 kilo - wild ferments. The use of sulphur is minimal with tiny amounts used just after malo and at bottling. Other than this no other additions are used whatsoever. These are compact, elegant and character driven wines from a Barossa valley expert.
This is a cracker… A wild perfume of red berries, briar, fennel, undergrowth, old campfire. Really quite compelling. Just on medium weight, serious ‘pinosity’, if that’s a thing, light, fine, silken flow, slender grip of tannin dips into savouriness and yet the wine finds succulence in pure, red berry and rose water fruit character. Sheesh, this is fine grenache.’ MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Front2016GrenacheAustralia349Special Price $36.00 Regular Price $45.00
Monteguelfo Chianti DOCG 2020Wow! This was such a wonderful surprise and terrific value Chianti from the estates of Andrea Cecchi. Made from 90% Sangiovese and 10% Colorino, the wine does not see any oak and has a tradiotional leaning and plenty of character, particularly for a wine at this price. The Cecchi family has 125 years of winemaking history and have some excellent vineyards at their disposal.
It's a wonderfully vibrant & fresh expression of sangiovese that retains its fleshy and soft fruits throughout with a pillowy texture. Hints of black cherry and wild forest fruits with a touch of leather and some savoury dried herbs.

Badenhorst Caperitif 'Kaapse Dief' Vermouth 750ml
For decades this unique aperitif inspired barmen all over the globe, even making its way into recipes in numerous famous cocktail and referenced in the classic cocktail bible from the late 1800's, the Savoy Cocktail Book. Around 1910, the company that made it disappeared, and with it the product, along with its coveted recipe.
A century later classic Danish mixologist, Lars Lyndgaard met Adi the two took to recreating this once famous 'Cape Apertif' as it was known. Caperitif is handcrafted by infusing Chenin Blanc with the flavours and aromas of some 35 natural botanicals, many of which are unique to the insane biodiversity of the Cape Floral Kingdom.
These are made in batch lots with each batch being subsequently labeled L1, L2... and so on, and so on. Bitter grapefruit, crushed grapes with a gentle quinine bitterness on the nose and palate.Thyme and citrus flood the palate and there is a gentle, spicy warmth with a hint of cinnamon and star-anise. Sweet and citrusy that leads to a persistent and pleasantly bitter finish. This is definitely a beast of it's own and sits somewhere between a Lillet-esk vermouth with a warm southern feel.VermouthSouth Africa505Special Price $43.20 Regular Price $54.00
Casa Castillo Las Gravas Garnacha Syrah Monastrell 2013
The 2013 Las Gravas, a blend that has been changing through the years and that in 2013 was 70% Monastrell with 15% each Garnacha and Syrah, had an extended élevage and was only bottled in July 2015, so it's been released later than the other wines from that vintage. This traditional red from north-facing vineyards on sandy soils covered with big boulders fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in barrel for some 19 months. If last time I thought the 2012 could have been the best Las Gravas ever, this time I have the same feeling with this 2013 from a cooler vintage which allowed for a slower ripening of the grapes and better acidity and freshness in the wine. The wine might be slightly marked by the élevage and still has some spicy aromas nicely interwoven with notes of bright red cherries, raspberries and flowers, with the signature thyme and rosemary. The palate feels terribly balanced, with some dusty tannins and a supple finish, not as refined as the Pie Franco, slightly rustic, but elegantly rustic. Of course it can be drunk now, especially with food, but I'd wait to pull the cork, as this should be a fantastic bottle of Las Gravas in a few years. Classic styled Cape Chenin but with a wonderful modern outlook. Floral and honey-dew melon with a touch of citrus and steely notes. The mouth has the lightest touch of sweetness that is quckly drawn out by the bone-drying acidity which lend a wonderful poise and light touch to the wine. Climens 2016 375ml
I tasted the 2016 Climens from four separate lots identified by location, harvest dates, alcohol, residual sugar and the percentage each lot represents of the harvest. The four wines were remarkably different. The Nord was both plush and tropical-leaning, yet with notable freshness, while the Sud managed to be both deep and also light on its feet. I found the Ouest to be the most precise and aromatically lifted of the samples, while the Est was the most concentrated. A simple, impromptu blend of the four lots suggests the 2016 Climens is shaping up to be a magnificent Barsac. The interplay of the various components is quite remarkable. ANTONIO GALLONI
The 2016 Climens was tasted from the 12 different lots that will go into the Grand Vin, with some selected from the Deuxième Vin, Cyprès de Climens. As usual, I had to assemble them in my mind and relate commonalities, though at a négoçiant a week later I re-tasted four preprepared micro-blends. I found much elegance this year. It is not a powerful Climens in the making and even with the higher alcohol lots that reached 14.9%, you could not feel any warmth and the wines maintained the tension. Some lots displayed saline finishes, perhaps a little more than usual. Perhaps the most important factor was just how "Barsac" they all tasted. Sometimes some lots can taste more Sauternes-like in style, but not this year. NEAL MARTIN2016Sem/Sauv BlendFrance356Special Price $76.00 Regular Price $95.00
William Fevre Chablis 2019 375ml
A sleeper of the vintage, Fèvre's 2019 Chablis Village opens in the glass with notes of citrus oil, white flowers, crisp green apple and oyster shell. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and chiseled, it's taut and concentrated, with racy acids and a long, chalky finish. Produced from some 40 hectares of vineyards, averaging around 50 years old, this was cropped at yields of 43 hectoliters per hectare. Unusually intense and structured, readers willing to give this cuvée a bit of bottle age will be rewarded. WILLIAM KELLEY, Wine Advocate
From 50 year old vines, with a yield of 46 hl/ha in 2019. Pale lime green. The Domaine version of William Fèvre Chablis offers a classical nose, leaner than, some, yet with intensity on the palate., some of the iodine character is present, but strong fresh citrus fruit too. Exceptional length. Lemongrass acidity. JASPER MORRIS MW

Airlie Bank Yarra CuveeThe Airlie Bank range is a bit of a favourite of us here. It offers stunning value given the juice in the bottle and allows winemaker Tim Shand a bit of fun-time in the winery to make wines that sit outside the core range of classics from the Yarra.
This sparkling is a blend of 85% Chardonnay and 15% Pinot Noir- sourced from within the Yarra Valley. Small portions were barrel fermented and given extended time on lees to build a little texture and complexity to the final bottling.
Fresh cut citrus and pear are complemented by a light doughy, bready complexity which is a bit of a welcome surprise at this level. Route du Van Dolcetto Shiraz 2018A passion project for The Dexter clan (Todd and Debbie) and Bird (Ian and Ruth, David and Marie) families sourcing grapes from all over Victoria to put into this fun label. Winemaker Todd heads up the team in winery so if that is not enough to get you interested then I don't know what is. Great stuff all round from the label but we think this wine is the most fun and interesting out of the lot.
King Valley/Alpine Valley
A juicy little number with that loveley blue fruit clove spice hit you get from Dolcetto. The shiraz throw in some more darker broody fruit and the earthy peppercorn element as well. This is such a fun little wine that is screaming drink me now! Plush and pretty its a crowd pleaser. PWS2018Dolcetto, shirazAustralia443Special Price $15.20 Regular Price $19.00
Haut Bages Liberal 2016 1500ml
PAUILLAC - 5th Growth
The 2016 Haut-Bages Libéral has turned out beautifully. Rose petals, lavender and sweet red cherry are some of the notes that grace this fine, translucent Pauillac. Medium in body and precise, with exquisite finesse and nuance, the 2016 is incredibly expressive today. This is a fabulous showing from proprietor Claire Villars Lurton. Telmo Rodriguez Gaba do Xil Mencia 2018The entry-level red 2018 Gaba do Xil Tinto is mostly Mencía with some other grapes from the mixed plantings in old vineyards. It fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel, where it matured for 12 months before bottling. This was a cooler vintage and went back to harvests from yesteryear. It was not an easy year, but the most successful wines are going to have good freshness. Here, I see more complexity than in the previous vintage; this is less varietal and goes more in the direction of the single-vineyard reds. There is ripeness but without excess, with herbal and spicy aromas and a notable finish. LUIS GUTIERREZ, RobertParker.com

Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Roche Calcaire 2018A very succulent gewurz with tons of yellow fruit, as well as rose aromas, then some spice joins the picture as it aerates in the glass. At once very creamy, frankly off-dry yet very fresh on the palate, this is delightful now. Drink now, either by itself or with mature cheese. STUART PIGOTT
Flint, smoke, chalk and cream all appear in brief flashes on the nose of this wine. The palate still holds some residual carbon dioxide but then slowly reveals serene and ripe but bright pear fruit at its core. Freshness takes its cue from a pithy texture and lends shape to this bold but fresh, bone-dry wine. WINE ENTHUSIAST
This wine is mostly the second wine of Pinot-Gris from the Clos Windsbuhl. Sometimes, small volumes of other single vineyards (Heimbourg and Clos Jebsal) can be used in addition, depending on vineyard selection we are doing. The old vines of Pinot-Gris in the Windsbuhl were planted in the 1960s or earlier. When we acquired the Clos in 1987, some vines needed to be pulled out (wrong grape or rootstock) and were replaced partly with some Pinot-Gris between 1988 and 1992. These 'younger' vines are not used in the Clos Windsbuhl and all go into this cuvée. However, the vineyard signature is well present: good acidity, elegant racy palate…. but also a tendency to keep residual sweetness if the ripeness goes just slightly too high. It is therefore very important to pick at the right moment, and Pinot-Gris can evolve very quickly, which was done perfectly in 2018. The wine was able to ferment dry from very healthy grapes.
Clear yellow colour. There is an immediate sense of ripe white fruits (peach, pears) and citrus aromas on the nose, with an almost 'Riesling like' character. The palate is refined, elegant and the dry finish adds to the complexity of the wine. Good length, medium power, so drinkable! It really is a very convincing Pinot-Gris and a style we would like to achieve exactly like this every year! ZIND HUMBRECHT

Zind Humbrecht Riesling Roche Calcaire 2019Very attractive yellow fruit with the emphasis on Amalfi lemon, but also some stone fruit and just a hint of caramel. Very elegant and polished, this has vibrant acidity that very neatly matches the chalky character from the tip of your tongue right to the back of the mouth. Only just beginning to open up! Fedellos do Couto Peixes Peixe da Estrada 2016
Sourced from organically farmed vines, the 2016 Peixe da Estrada is a village red blend from old vines (60+ years old) on granite soils in Viana do Bolo planted with multiple red varieties—Mencía, Bastardo, Garnacha Tintorera, Negreda, Grao Negro, Caíño, Aramón, Godello, Dona Branca, Colgadeira, Treixadura, Palomino, Caíño Blanco and Moscatel de Grão Miúdo, etc. It fermented with full clusters and indigenous yeasts and matured in used 500-liter oak barrels and a 3,200-liter oak vat for one year. It has tons of cassis and small berry aromas and is very expressive and balsamic, with brightness and light, in a way that reminds me of some wines from Cachapoal in Chile. The palate has fine tannins and a certain elegance, round but also long. Like all the wines in the project, it's sold without any appellation of origin, and they just replicated the wines from yesteryear, mixing red and white grapes, something that appellations don't usually allow. 9,000 bottles were filled in February 2018. Soho Wine Co Peggy Sauvignon Blanc 2020Fabulously fruited and brightly expressed with feijoa, Granny Smith apple, lemon/lime zest and floral aromas on the nose, followed by a flavoursome palate delivering excellent fruit intensity and juicy acidity. SAM KIM, Wine Orbit
This is part of the entry level range from the highly regarded Soho wines. A combination of Wairau & Awatere Valley's in the Marlborough this straddles a wonderful bridge between the tropical fruit bombs and more racy versions of sauvignon blanc we see in regions like the Adelaide Hills. It does it with style and grace too and doesn't leave any of that Marlborough goodness out but in a more focused and fine package.
