January Premium 6-pack 2021 - Head Wines Back Vintage Magnum PackHead Wines is the venture of Alex Head. In 1997, he finished a degree in biochemistry from Sydney University. Experience in fine wine stores, importers and an auction house was followed by vintage work at wineries he admired: Tyrrell's, Torbreck, Laughing Jack and Cirillo Estate. JAMES HALLIDAY
Alex Head has made a name for himself in a short time. We have been lucky enough to part of his journey since inception and for us the wines represent a modern, dialled-down and focused style that offer a wonderful counterpoint to the 'typical' Barossa Shiraz.
Heady, as we affectionately know him, has always had a strong influence from his counterparts in Europe and in particular from the Cote Rotie. This influence has even made its way into his labelling where two of the wines, The Brunette and The Blonde, are named after the two most fabled hills in Cote-Rotie, the Cote Blonde and the Cote Brune.
We have been offered magnums from Heady's personal collection before and snapped them up so when offered again recently we couldn't help but put something together. This is a cracking little selection of 3 of our favourite wines from the extensive line-up.
The two 'crus' are from 2014, and while considered a cooler and sometimes more a-typical Barossa vintage, we have always found many of the wines from that vintage to be beautifully svelte with lovely verve and energy. This is absolutely the case here, and the combination of vintage, large format and perfect cellarage is going to be a real treat.
The 2016 offered up a great vintage with ideal conditions producing dense colour, and rich, vibrant flavours. A touch of rain later in February quenched the thirst of some of the drier vineyards helping to bring home a wonderful offering from Head in particular. A better priced, aged Shiraz in large format would be difficult, if not impossible to find.

Dominique Portet Brut Rose LD NV
The grapes for this traditional-method sparkling came from two elevated vineyards (325m) in the Upper Yarra. The grapes are handpicked, gently pressed and fermented before going through secondary fermentation in bottle. The wine was then aged for two years in cool, temperature-controlled cellars, then disgorged and given a light dosage prior to release.
This is a traditional method blend of 50% pinot noir, 30% chardonnay and 20% pinot meunier, all grown in the Yarra Valley. Held on lees for 2 years prior to disgorgement and a light dosage. A totally delicious and elegantly poised wine, with fresh red fruits of every description dancing around on the bouquet and palate alike, the finish harmonious. Spanish Drinking Dozen - Winter 2021 Part II
The Spanish wine scene is now one of the most exciting to explore of all of Europe. The countryside is a multitude of undiscovered and re-discovered varieties as well as home to some of the most comforting and well-known wines of the world.
Weather drinking juicy and soft Tempranillo based wines from Rioja to incredible pinot-like wines of the north-west corner or from crazy old Garnaxa bush vines in Priorat there is so much to like.
In more recent years young and up-and-coming winemakers are re-vitalising ancient varieties and regions breathing new life and vigour into the industry.
They are the turning the old ideas of the past on their head and celebrating a rich and forgotten vinous history.
Every quarter we will be putting out a seasonal drinking pack which will be updated as we see great new wines, vintages rolls and the latest and greatest to hit our shores. At 15%-20% off or more, this a great way to explore Spain offering exceptional value and delicious drinking.

Mauro Veglio Barolo Arborina 2017The 2016 of this wine was possibly the greatest wine I had ever tasted form Veglio but this is a more than worthy follow-up. It's ultra pretty and delicate with a wafting persona is the embodiment of the vineyard which always, always returns such feminine and subtly beautiful wines. All red petals and herbs, red fruits and mint. They're never about raw power but the essence of nebbiolo is present in the wines. Here, there's also a little framing oak but the vineyard signature is paramount. This wine sneaks up on you; very La Morra and very Arborina in its fine tannins profile. If you want to understand the nature of the commune and the frazzione then drink this wine. MICHAEL MCNAMARA, PWS

Chateau d'Yquem 2006 375ml
PRE ARRIVAL - DUE EARLY 2022
While no surprise here, this wine, which will be bottled in 2009, is certainly this estate's greatest effort since their 2001. It completely outclasses everything from the appellation, but even when you're number one, that's often hard to do. This light gold wine offers up a sensational smorgasbord of aromas including huge honeyed pineapple and other caramelized tropical fruit flavors, massive richness, and a viscous, unctuous texture with the oak beautifully integrated. The wine has enough acidity to buttress its full-bodied mouthfeel, but this is not by any means the sweetest or most alcoholic of the d'Yquems I have tasted. In fact, in the range of d'Yquems, this is a powerful wine, but it is one built more on finesse and elegance, a la the 1988. Nevertheless, this wine will prove to have 50+ years of longevity. The finish, the mid-palate, the sensation of looking at a skyscraper of Semillon with a small dosage of Sauvignon, is impressive. Like all of the sweet wines of Barsac and Sauternes, one can drink this young, but the nuances and complexities really don't emerge for at least a decade, especially in the case of a wine such as this. Again a very limited wine release form one of the star's of Margaret river. Alana and Julian Have a small vineyard in the Northern hamlet of Margaret River Yallingup. This 2019 follows on from the very popular 2017 and 2018 single vineyard wines with a dense bright essence of cabernet. Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve NVThe base wine is equal parts pinot noir, chardonnay and pinot meunier from the'07 vintage, and 40% reserve wine is added prior to the wine being bottled for its second fermentation. The reserve wine has an average age of 10 years, so after three years on lees prior to disgorgement the Brut Reserve has an average age of just under six years. Aromas of brioche, almond and peach; the palate has great length and complexity, the youthful base wine's freshness contrasting with the velvety/creamy nuances of the Reserve. Mauro Veglio Barolo Gattera 2017To me this is the most surprising of all the wines from the Veglio range in 2017. Alessandro has replaced his uncle's plot from within this famed vineyard with his own plot and in so doing, the wine is more defined, cooler fruited and ultimately more expressive and beautiful. This 2017 is a revelation. Mint, liquorice, cherry and cut hay mix with orange rind, framing an expressive and energy driven palate with red fruits and long, fine and chalky tannins. Lovely wine and the best wine I have ever seen from Veglio off this site. MICHAEL MCNAMARA, PWS2017NebbioloItaly457Special Price $115.00 Regular Price $135.00
Peay Vineyards Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 2018The 2018 Chardonnay (Sonoma Coast) is a gorgeous appellation-level wine. Lemon confit, mint, apricot and a kiss of new French oak add character to a silky, exceptionally polished wine that hits all the right notes. About three quarters of this fruit is from the estate. Huet Vouvray Clos du Bourg Sec 2019The 2019 Sec Clos du Bourg is a wine of stature and vertical build. There is real gravitas to the orchard fruit, spice and earthy flavors. Tasted blind, Clos du Bourg might be confused with a red wine such is its feeling of volume and structure. Far from an easygoing Vouvray, Clos du Bourg is a very serious wine. I loved it. McHenry Hohnen Calgardup Vineyard Chardonnay 2018Grown on a site 20km south of the Margaret River township. It's a fine-boned and lengthy wine but it doesn't leave flavour behind. Elegant power is a good way to describe it. It's flinty but not too much so, fleshed with stone fruit, touched up with meal and green apple, and intricately complex to close. All the while sweet fruit flows. It's an easy wine to get excited over. (95) CAMPBELL MATTISON, Wine Companion

Chalk Hill Europa Shiraz 2020Chalk Hill is a family owned wine company dedicated to making small batch, hand crafted wines of distinction. The Harvey family grape growing heritage goes back six generations in South Australia, and they now have six vineyards (two of which are Certified Organic and the rest sustainably managed) spread across the beautiful McLaren Vale wine region. The home vineyard was first planted in 1897 and these century old vines still bear fruit today. It is the family commitment to make wines that reveal the unique place that is McLaren Vale, and to showcase the efforts from the vineyard to the bottle.
Each of the seven parcels are treated separately and this sees a combo of steel tank and older oak so remains beautifully fresh, lifted and pure. A perfumed nose with red and dark berry fruits combining with milk chocolate, spice and roasted nuts. Medium to full bodied, this wine is beautifully balanced with layers of red and blue fruits up front. Egly Ouriet Grand Cru Brut NVYet another striking release of this wine, this is made exclusively from Grand Cru vines predominantly in Ambonnay but also Bouzy and Verzenay. It’s 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay from low-yielding, perfectly tended vines that have been harvested fully ripe. Natural fermentation was with wild yeasts only and the first period of maturation (before going to bottle) lasted almost one year, with the wine remaining on its fine lees for the whole time. The wine clarified slowly and naturally—as was once typical across the region—and as such there was no fining nor filtration. Over 50% of the wine was fermented and aged in oak casks. The dosage was at three grams per litre, so extra-brut territory.NVChampagneFrance376Special Price $238.00 Regular Price $280.00

Taste of Tassie 2021 Super Six Pack
Tasmania has become such a hot-bed of awesome talent and great wine. As one of Australia's coolest wine growing regions pinot noir and chardonnay have excelled and sparkling wine still proves to be one of its crown jewels. These have been mainstays of the Apple Isle for some time and there looks this to be no stopping the tide of incredible examples of each making their way across the Tasman.
Fast-forward a generation and we are really starting to see what the verdant land can really turn out. In our mind some of the best Euro-styled rieslings are being produced there while the marginal climates and savvy wine-making are turning out some stellar textural pinot gris.
While pinot noir may reign supreme it is other reds like shiraz, that may, in time, prove to be something even more special. Time will tell and while it does we will happily sip our way through all that Tasmania's has to offer.$209.00 Regular Price $248.00

Here the secondary fermentation in bottle is encouraged by the addition of unfermented must (juice) of the same wine. The wine does not undergo disgorgment and so retains the natural yeast sediment which, if disturbed, gives the wine a slightly hazy appearance. This is a nod to the traditional styles of the region enjoyed by the Cosmo family in the days of their parents and grandparents. It presents with a slightly softer profile and more subtlety of character than some of the other cuvees. For me it is the kind of wine that you want to pop at the start of a long lunch or dinner with friends, it is eminently digestible and provides serious ease for consumption. May Premium Pack 2021 - Alternative Burgundy Pack
There is no doubt that the prices in Burgundy are starting to move beyond what us mere mortals can afford. So, to remedy the situation we have put together a cracking compliment of great burgundy from a selection of the regions underrated regions.
The slightly warmer reached of Burgundies south offer an up a diverse set of topographies and soils that are the perfect foil for pinot. These are regions that fly under the radar and while they may not be getting the attention they deserve they are producing some fantastic pinot with real character and charm.
These ‘satellite’ appellations, as they are often referred too, are coming into there own and with savvy winemakers and growers recognising the awesome potential now has never been a better a better time to explore.
We start with Marsannay and along with Santenay probably one of the better know quality producers of pinot outside of the most famous villages of the Cote de Nuit. In style it resembles its close neighbours in Fixin and Gevrey Chambertin with a morello cherry attack, black currant fruits and a mellow and generous body that often flows into a meaty, savoury finish.
The wines of Collotte already offer incredible value and given the quality of the two plots of limestone rich soil this comes off as an impressive wine. The husband-and-wife team use only a touch of new oak on there more premium cuvees allowing a purity and sense of sauvage to shine through here their other cuvees.
Fruther south Santenay and Auxey Duresses are also close neighbours and remain a part of the Cote-de-beaune. Santenay sits off to the far southern tip with Auxey nestled in between Volnay, Mersault and Puligny Montrachet.
Auxey includes 9 premiere crus with its mid-weight black and red fruits often off-set by some velvety, fine boned but moderate tannins. The Domaine Florence Cholet wines harness this beautifully with grace and charm. The wines have incredible buoyancy and racy-ness that is hard to not be a little taken by – fantastic stuff
Santennay follows in the footsteps of the Beaune with soft and round edges to the wines and a floral lift reminiscent of the wines of Volnay. They are a touch more supple in their nature then their northern cousins but with a slight more wild fruit profile.
Abbaye de Santenay are firmly focused on the vineyards where Ludovic and his team maintain the vines in a rigorous way to obtain high quality fruit. The philosophy of the domaine is to get the best of the terroirs, respecting nature and preserving the finesse of the wines.
Further south in the Cote Chalonnaise as the land broadens out and the sun gently warms the rolling hills. Its like of top-quality sites when compared to its cousins in the north is more than made up by its consistent quality and excellent value.
Mercurey in particular is amongst one of the best villages to source and even producers such as Faiveley have actively been involved in the region for decades, recognising the potential for quality. It bears a few premier cru sites that sit in best positions and offers up some of the more full bodied firmer wines, particularly in their youth.$349.00 Regular Price $415.00

REBECCA GIBB MW, Vinous
This is a blend of sites with younger vines. The wine is whole bunch pressed with a little crushing to give some phenolic impact and that really plays in to the wine beautifully. Saline, snappy and pristinely fruited with a waft of mineral reduction. Finishes with a little grip and a final punch of fruit before fading away and leaving a lovely splash of minerality.
