Idlewild The Bee Flora and Fauna White Wine 2017
Proprietor Sam Bilbro has spent virtually a lifetime around wine. His family owns Marietta, while brothers Jake and Scot are behind the reborn Limerick Lane. At Idlewild, Sam Bilbro focuses on Italian and other less well-known varieties. In addition to these wines, I also tasted the, Arneis Fox Hill Vineyard, Vin Gris Dry Creek Valley and Grenache Gris Gibson Ranch. The best wines in this range are compelling, and point to a bright future. ANTONIO GALLONI, www.vinousmedia.com
Having had a relationship with the Bilbro family as importers of the Marietta wines some years ago we were delighted to find youngest son, Sam, was behind this new venture, Idlewild. In many ways the wines are the anitpathy of what so many believe Californian wines are supposed to be. Hunting out heritage stands of Italian and Rhone varietals (mostly in Mendocino County) Bilbro makes extremely interesting wines characterised by texture, savouriness and subtlety. Skin contact is a part of the wines as is a relatively non-interventionist approach; both indicative of the preferences of the younger brigade of Calfornia producers. PWS
The 2017 White The Bee Flora & Fauna, is a classy, polished wine to drink now and over the next few years. A Rodda Baxendale Vineyard Chardonnay Whitlands 2019Taut and textural but there's plenty of energy here and it has the flavour to match. Apple, nectarine and peach flavours with flashes of cedar, custard and wood smoke. It's a wine with pure, long lines. Artomana Txakolina 2019This estate wine is a blend of varieties dominated by Hondarrabi Zuri (70%) with equal parts of Izkiriota, Izkiriota Ttippia and Hondarrabi Zuri Zerratia. The parcels are hand-picked separately and left to cold soak for 24 hours at 10 C°. This increases both volume and aromatic complexity in the final wine. The wines ferment spontaneously with vineyard yeasts and spend four months on lees in stainless steel before bottling.
So racy and lemon pithy with a nice punch of tropical fruits. There is slight shebert fizz to the clean and crispy fruit. The light sparkling edge lends energy and vibrancy to an already fresh palate. So easy to know back. PWS2016Spain$32.00 As low as $28.80
Bondar Fiano 2021
"There must be a bit of magic behind Bondar. All of the wines have an ethereal quality" JANE FAULKNER, Halliday Wine Companion
We couldn't agree more. There does seem to be a little bit of magic going on behind the scenes here. Certainly great vineyards play their part here but a lot has to be said for what Andre Bondar is doing with the wines. Chat with him and he always reveals a beautifully considered and thoughtful approach to wine making that shines through.
Their fiano is spot on text-book style fiano but with a little extra flash of fruit and texture that is often either over-exaggerated or under-done in Italian examples. This version marries the varietals natural tendency to flesh out with a wonderful zip and freshness that pulls it together nicely. A touch of exotic tropical fruits and some lemony pith play off each other wonderfully. A little mineral twang keeps things interesting and while there is plenty of plush fruit it remains fresh and vibrant.2020FianoAustralia436
Quintodecimo Exultet Fiano d'Avellino DOCG 2018
Nothing like these has ever come out of Campania before; the wines are unbelievably intense without being heavy or cloying, displaying such deep, vivid varietal and terroir character. Frighteningly good wines. JUSTERINI & BROOKS
Quintodecimo is one of the most remarkable estates in Italy and certainly must be the greatest estate in Campania. Situated in the Irpina sub-zone about 40 minutes east of Naples the estate is the brainchild of famed oenologist/professor/thinker, Luigi Moio. The estate’s genesis came a little over 10 years ago and represents the fruition of Moio’s life’s work in wine.
The son of one of Campania’s better producing families, Moio’s career fanned out from there to include a long stint learning and making wine in France followed by various winemaking consultancies for many of the current accepted stars of the region. Despite his growing status within Campania and the world (by this stage he was guesting at international wine conferences talking about his research work) he was frustrated with the local industry’s reluctance to really embrace the highest levels of quality in favour of more expedient and cost efficient outcomes. And so, Quintodecimo was born; a 10 hectare property at Mirabella Eclano

Tillie J Chardonnay 2021Lovely wine here, and shows excellent balance between flavour and restraint, gloss and creaminess, flint and crunch of acidity. Apple, ripe lime, some cinnamon and aniseed, almonds and more umami flavours. The finish offers zest and ripe apple, and again that savoury flourish. Length is excellent, and all up a fine thing to drink. GARY WALSH, Wine Front2021chardonnayAustralia506

On 15% of the wines Keller holdings that are classified 'Grand Cru' as labelled as such which means you are getting a lot of stellar wines in these bottlings.
Plenty of pear, citrus and apple blossom swirling around here with a mineral, slatey notes in the background. It's never tropical over the OTT but it is just bursting with juicy fruit and lovely salinity and rocky goodness. It fires on all four cylinders here but remains impeccably balanced. Great stuff at this level and exactly what you would expect from a producer of this calibre.

Made by Rose Kentish at the Vino Vecchio winery in Corsica (French-governed island west of Italy / southeast of France). I don’t much love the price but three releases in – I do love the wine itself. Hugel Gentil 2019Such a friendly and convivial blended dry white, this has so much upfront, floral appeal (orange blossom and roses), juicy fruit, generous body and just enough acidity to keep it bright at the finish. Drink now. JAMES SUCKLING
Drink now!? You don't have to tell us twice James! This is always such a delicious wine and if there was wine that represented what Hugel do and how well they do it, the Gentil would do it with aplomb.
Famille Hugel was established in 1639 by Hans Ulrich Hugel and is one of the regions most loved producers and largest landholders with in excess of 120 hectares of vineyards to their name. Situated in Riquewihr the estate has over the years built an enviable reputation for the consistency and quality of its wines.2019White BlendFrance343
Chalmers Vermentino 2021The Chalmers family was justly named 2014 Viticulturist of the Year by Gourmet Traveller WINE. Their commitment to innovation and excellence has made them a pivotal force in the Australian wine scene for more than 20 years. Bruce and Jenni began growing grapes in the 1980s, with their vineyard at Euston developing into one the largest and most diverse privately owned vineyards in the country.
The 2021 releases looks to be another fantastic rendition of this variety. a crisp and refreshing drink with white florals, soft stonefruit and a lick of saltiness, perfect for the Australian al fresco lifestyle. Handpicked fruit was whole bunch-pressed and wild fermented in stainless steel before the wine sat on less for 6 months. Clean and crisp, with white peach and Meyer lemon, a lifted chalkiness and sea spray tang leaving you wanting more.

Domaine de L'Eveche Bourgogne Aligote 2020Based on the limestone laden soils of Saint Denis de Vaux, the heart of the Cote Chalonnaise for value wines, this small family-run Domaine are regular recipients of a 'star' from the Guide Hachette. This finely composed aligoté has an underlying minerally tension that adds texture and energy to the wine. On the palate white florals and preserved lemon flavours mix with chalky phenolics, adding a fine chewy finish. This nervy aligoté thrills with its sense of fragility. Jeff Carrel Morillon Blanc 2019
STAGE 16 - HILLY - CARCASSONNE > FOIX 178.5 KM
Jeff Carrell makes a large range of wines from domain and negociant style bottling to wines under his Jeff Carrell label which this is bottled under. Based in and around southwest France he mainly works with organic, biodynamic or otherwise sustainably farmed grapes. Morillon is the local name for chardonnay which this is 100%. Unusually it includes a small percentage of botrytis effected grapes which give this a touch of opulence and exotic notes.
This is grown on poor and rocky soils of quartz, granite and limestone pebbles from several plots. Vinified in a combo of old wood and steel tank it builds the texture layer upon layer of crunchy citrus fruit punctuated by pretty honeyed florals. There is weight and richness but all done with a light touch. The wines have a small component of bortyritis fruit which give a warm, peach and apricot edge along with a lick of sweet spice. Intriguing as it is delicious.2020chardonnay
Badenhorst Secateurs Chenin Blanc 2020
AA Badenhorst Family Wines are grown, made and matured on Kalmoesfontein farm in
the Swartland appellation of South Africa. The 28ha of old bushvines grow in the
Siebritskloof part of the Paardeberg mountain.
Cousins Hein and Adi Badenhorst are at the helm of this fantastic estate with a rich history in the region. Adi was a founding member of the Swartland Revolution and Swartland Independent and is a parrot farmer, LP collector, egg poaching pro, tea connoisseur, Land Cruiser driver, ponytail wearer and local legend (just ask him).
Classic styled Cape Chenin but with a wonderful modern outlook. Floral and honey-dew melon with a touch of citrus and steely notes. The mouth has the lightest touch of sweetness that is quckly drawn out by the bone-drying acidity which lend a wonderful poise and light touch to the wine. This comes of dry, don't worry but has a lovely plush element to the fruit. Great stuff and may have you falling in love with Chenin and South African wines on one-foul-swoop! Amen Break Chardonnay 2019Hailing from a small village in east of Australia called New Zealand the Clonal Brothers are Matt and Steve Harrop and together they are a lethal winemaking combination. Matt will be a familiar name to most as the long-time winemaking brains behind the Shadowfax wines and more recently the newly installed winemaker for Curly Flat. His easy-going nature belies a profound winemaking talent that combines an innate understanding of his craft with equal parts accessibility and intellectualism in his wines. Steve -who still operates out of NZ - also has a couple of decades of vineyard development and wine marketing behind him and his ability to root out the right parcel at the right price is legendary.
This is stellar stuff. Lovely wiff of mealy-reduction and struck match open up to lifted, peach and apple tree fruits with a little mineral hint floating around. Nicely framed by oak that plays a supporting role never intruding but poking its head in here-and-there. The medium bodied body palate packs plenty of flavour in and there is great balance and nice, zipp acidity. PWS2019chardonnayAustralia500$20.00 As low as $18.00
Nick O'Leary Riesling 2021
A good season for CBR Riesling, I take it, given Our Mike’s recent reviews.
Distinctly spicy, ginger and that, green apple and lime, light powdery texture, positive acidity, though it feels soft and comely in a way, juice and zest and length as it goes. Excellent. A beauty. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front
Situated in the picturesque Hall Valley, in the Murrumbidgee River corridor, just outside the ACT, the estate incorporates a modern winemaking facility and 5-hectare vineyard. A strong focus on hand worked Shiraz and Riesling wines that truly exhibit the character of our region as well as expressing unique personality and style.
A Canberra regional blend, consisting of 9 different vineyard parcels. Grapes were hand harvested, then whole bunch pressed into stainless steel tanks and the wine held on light lees work for added texture.
White flowers, apple blossom and citrus. The palate is generous with a powerful mix of Granny Smith apple and freshly squeezed lime. The mouth-watering natural acidity leads to a pristine palate of balance and length. The lees works gives a lovely grip and softens and brings out some of that mid-palate juiciness that kicks the fruit along to a taught close. Yum!2019RieslingAustralia377$26.00 As low as $23.40

Chateau Montravel Blanc (Semillon) 2016This is a 100% Sémillon form a 1 hectare vineyard located in Montravel, a sub-region of Bergerac.
The grapes are hand harvested in small lug boxes, bunches are selected one by one. Pressed in an air tight press, the must is then barrel fermented and the wine aged on fine lees with regular batonnage. Aged for eleven months in 1/3 new, 1/3 one year old and 1/3 in two years old oak barrels.
I love this wine - Semillion grown on chalk with a minerally intense core. It is opulent and dense yet has great freshness. A slight touch of stuck match reduction adds complexity to a lifted bright nose of citrus and minerally notes. Great power and mouth coating flavour and yet finishes crisp and clean. ALEX WILCOX

Vasse Felix Premier Chardonnay 2018Best Wine - Ray Jordan's Top 100 Whites & Sparklings 2019
Another stunning chardonnay from Virginia Willcock. This is high-class stuff. Oatmeal and lemon curd on the nose, with traces of citrus. The palate is sublime. There is texture yet it is held close and controlled through to a very long finish. This was initially tasted late in 2019 and after six months, the deep complex flavours started to be released. Bewdiful. (96) RAY JORDAN
This is a bit of rock ‘n' roll that performs brilliantly in Vasse Felix's chardonnay hierarchy. Perfect balance of flavours from grapefruit, lemon pith and delicate leesy-nutty characters with plenty of flint and saline. It's linear, long and pure, with a riff of acidity that keeps the band together. (96) JANE FAULKNER, Wine Companion

Quin Eden Riesling 2018100% Riesling, Eden Valley, Australia
Planted in 1971 on a grey, sandy loam with a south easterly aspect and an altitude of 430m this vineyard has survived and flourished with minimal irrigation and inputs over its lifetime.50% of this wine was treated like a red on arrival to the winery with fruit destemmed into picking bins. The juice remained on skins for seven days with pressing occurring once 2 Baume had been consumed by yeast activity. This component was then fermented in stainless steel on full solids and transferred to oak for maturation once complete. The other component was treated traditionally with juice settled after pressing and clear juice racked and inoculated with the selected yeast strain. The two components were blended in old oak for maturation in June with bottling occurring five months later in November 2017. QUIN WINES2018RieslingAustralia387$42.00 As low as $37.80
Bilancia Pinot Gris 2020Pear and lifted floral aromatics and a full, ripe, lush palate. This is how Pinot Gris should be.
2020 was a spectacular vintage for Hawke’s Bay and this Pinot Gris fruit was harvested in brilliant condition. Pressed and cold settled before racking and transfer to very old barriques for a coolish, slow fermentation. Slow fermentation assists in the retention of the often-subtle varietal fruit characters of Pinot Gris. The barrel fermentation is not meant to add oak character to the wine but rather, assist in texture. Texture is a very important feature in Pinot Gris.
Aromas of floral, fruit and musk coupled with a rich, textural and full palate, important characters for Pinot Gris, building from great fruit quality and attention to balance during winemaking. The wine is dry, the weight and flavour of the fruit carries the palate. WARREN GIBSON, winemaker

The Beautiful Isle White Delicious 2018Beautiful Isle Wines are a tribute to the vibrant apple crate art of Tasmania's 'Apple Isle' hey day. Based on the family estate Marions Vineyard which was once an apple and pear orchard dating back to the 1800's but no planted to a mix of classic red and white varietals.
The white is all the bits and pieces that don't quite make it into the final blends of their other wines, not because they don't make the cut but because there is a little too much here or there.
This is full of tropical fruit and peppery spice that leaps out of the glass. A touch of white flower and some lilting aromatics make it really enticing. Fleshy and plump on the palate a lovely zip of acidity rounds up all that plush fruit and gives it some nice focus. Plenty of energy on the finish.

Domaine Giachino Monfarina Savoie Blanc 2020
STAGE 11 - MOUNTAIN ALBERTVILLE > COL DU GRANON SERRE CHEVALIER 152 KM
Frédéric Giachino has been producing wine in his domain for more than 20 years, and utilising organic techniques for half of that time. Located in the Chartreuse Hills, the vines of Giachino grow along the limestone slopes of Mount Granier. The climate can be unforgiving, and the landscape offers only limited space for viticulture. However, ancient glaciers managed to create large valleys with rocky outcrops as they retreated. So, against the odds, the land is actually perfect for growing vines.
This is the most open and approachable of his wines with quince and pear gently spiced with mineral and waxy notes reticent of chenin blanc. Super fresh and clean as spring mineral water on the palate. Time on lees on adds an extra element of interest as well bedding down some of the more lifted aromatics. A light touch of fresh fennell and a gentle waft of meadow flowers on the close.2017France$46.00 As low as $41.40
Gorrondona Txakoli 2019
Doniene Gorrondona are one of a bunch of young Basque wineries who are elevating the classic, lean, dry, Txakoli style from the tourist fodder poured from great height in tiny bars along the lanes of San Sebastian into serious wine. Concentrating on organic farming, being careful with clonal and site selection and forgoing commercial yeasts. Although thankfully this doesn't prevent their wines from being seriously good in when consumed alongside huge helping of Pinxhos in rowdy atmospheres.
Gorrondona Txakoli is made from the traditional Basque varietals Hondurabi Zuri (85%) with little bits of Iskirita Zuri Hadia (15%). It’s handpicked and fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel, kept on lees for six months before being racked, then put through a single course filter and bottled.
Gorrondona shows cut grass, fresh lime leaf and white floral aromatics, almost reminiscent of dry Clare Valley Riesling. The palate is lean and tight, driven by a citric acid that makes it an ideal match for the salt-laden dishes of the Basque Country.2019White BlendSpain$26.00 As low as $23.40
