Sherrah Grenache Rose 2021
This is part of the new wave of South Australian producers with a new look of bright, gluggable and deceptively serious wines. No more flattening your palate with 110% oak, this is crunchy and fresh with a nod to its warm home in the Vale. Alex 'Boy Friday' is chief swirler and sniffer a title he self-bestowed and one we think gives you a good idea about what's going on at Sherrah.
When we tasted this recently, we all cooed at the upfront blast of juicy fruit, sweet spice, and absolute slurpable nature of this Rose. Bliss! It's pure, crispy, plush and so delicious. Plenty of raspberry and red cherry fruit that is punctuated by drifting spice and crunchy acidity. Just proves that grenache is such a perfect varietal for rose. This is beach and BBQ ready baby!

Bondar Junto GSM 2020
Grenache 68%, Shiraz 10%, Mataro 9%, Carignan 7%, Cinsault 5%, Counoise 1%. All the things.
A little bit of everything here – red fruits, pepper and spice, dried herbs, rock salt and black olive. Medium-bodied, a light dusting of tannin, quite fresh and crisp, also quite saline too, bony feel, and a finish of solid length. Understated style here. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

Hither & Yon Tempranillo 2021
An everyday quaff, suggesting that handling of this early ripening variety is getting better. Bing cherry, iodine, lilac and lavender. The tension is serviced by reduction as much as a verdant lilt and vanillin streak of gentle tannins. NED GOODWIN, James Halliday
A mid-weight red that has good purtity of blueberry and cherry fruit with a faint floral and white-pepper edge. Holds a sleek and succelent stance in the mouth and delivers a vividly fresh squeeze of tannin through the finish. Drink over the next 3 years. Screw cap. NICK STOCK, James Suckling
Richard and Malcolm Leask started what they call their "bottle project" in 2011 and which now has grown into a stonking, not-so-little wine brand out of the Mclaren Vale. They make a compliment of classic Mcclaren fair along with some brilliant "alt" varietals from Spain, Portugal and Italy. Pure and full of vitality there whole range is fantastic but the temp was one of our favourites.2021tempranilloAustralia436$29.00 As low as $26.10 -

Sherrah Shiraz 2019
Well I think Mike Bennie's review says it all. This is part of the new wave of South Australian producers with a new look of bright, gluggable and deceptively serious wines. No more flattening your palate with 110% oak, this is crunchy and fresh with a nod to it's warm home in the Vale. This is a winemaker to watch. PWS
The bottle says ‘the king of the Vale’ which is directed probably at the variety shiraz, but I’d say, like our existing monarchy in Australia, it’s a vestige of past – all hail grenache! (and other red grapes).Whatever your take on MVale shiraz, this is one that has mojo. Indeed, it’s stellar. It’s rippling with tannin, sure, it’s all dark fruit, dried fruits, kirsch and choc-strawberries, but there’s grip and pucker, good spice, light green herbal detail and a long but fresh finish. It’s hearty, slurpy, heartland stuff, but done really well, effortless you could say, and easy to like. MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Front

Yangarra Hickinbotham Grenache 2020Naturally fermented in 1800L stone amphora with little agitation aside from wetting the cap. 90 days on skins. An additional 8 months in amphora. This cuvée is akin to the finest pinot; svelte, detailed and uplifting. Aromas of sour cherry, raspberry, rosewater, mace and orange zest. The superior wine of 2019 here, or at least what I've tasted to date. Stunning. The tannins, growing with air and the next sip. The finish, jitterbug energetic, chiselled and chamois of texture. Long and succulent. Another addition to the Australian stable of finessed world-class grenache. NED GOODWIN MW, Halliday Wine Companion2019GrenacheAustralia436$61.00 As low as $54.90

Aphelion Trennery Grenache 2021Onkaparinga. A wonderful word. Plum and cherry, ripe and spicy, an earthy coal-like character. It’s firm and almost liqueur-like in intensity, with firm dusty tannin, and a dry plum and dried flower finish. Very good, but not quite as good as the other two single vineyard wines. Kind of sticky in its firmness. GARY WALSH, www.winefront.com
From the Onkaparinga Hills, a parcel of dry-grown bush vines, fermented as whole clusters and aged in a single, larger-format cask. This parcel was planted in the early 1970s and it has a sappy feel (whole clusters) and bright, very pure raspberries and some leafy elements on offer, as well as blueberries. The palate has quite smooth and ripe tannins, holds a fresh edge (low pH) and delivers a similar combination of red and blue fruits as seen on the nose. A little, chewy stone pop at the finish. Nuanced and elegant. Good now, but even better in a year or two. (95) NICK STOCK, www.jamessuckling.com2020GrenacheAustralia436$74.00 As low as $66.60 -
Aphelion Rapture Grenache 2021
The song by Blondie, in their somewhat stilted version of ‘rap’, or the second coming? It’s a difficult choice, though I think I prefer the former. The bottle I have is not the difficult cellaring shape shown here, more a traditional shape, albeit in thick heavyweight glass. And cork sealed, though nice corks they are.
Really exotic and spicy, ripe strawberry and raspberry, orange zest and gravel. It’s firm and dry, ultra-mineral feel to it, almost a chinotto/amaro character, pumice stone tannin, and a very long finish. Outstanding. And so much character. Throw your hands in the air! GARY WALSH, www.winefront.com
The top expression of grenache from Aphelion, this is a combination of Wait and Brini vineyards, both containing bush vines planted in the 1940s. This is a complex wine already, with a nose that’s so enticingly complex and detailed. It has bracken, sappy elements, berry pastry, spiced notes, raspberry, red plum and candied orange peel. The palate has a very plush, complete and seamless feel. This is so commanding, yet so deliciously appealing at once. Impressive poise, with long tannins that drive and frame the red and dark-berry fruit-soaked finish. Matured in a single, neutral demi-muid. Drink or hold.
