Naturally fermented in 1800L stone amphora with little agitation aside from wetting the cap. 90 days on skins. An additional 8 months in amphora. This cuvée is akin to the finest pinot; svelte, detailed and uplifting. Aromas of sour cherry, raspberry, rosewater, mace and orange zest. The superior wine of 2019 here, or at least what I've tasted to date. Stunning. The tannins, growing with air and the next sip. The finish, jitterbug energetic, chiselled and chamois of texture. A complex wine from the outset with gently reductive notes and modern oak spice threading into fresh cherry, spiced bread, rose, forest wood and blood orange, as well as darker cherry notes. The palate tells the full story. This displays real power and definition with clear-cut and powerful tannins. The intensity of the red-cherry fruit is impressive and the way it occupies the finish with length and uplift is the thing that defines great pinot noir per se. Strong vintage. Elegant, seamless pinot noir with fragrant, floral, red rose, dark cherry, anise, spice and restrained savoury and fresh herb characters. It's a complex medley of appealing flavours supported by an ethereal texture and a lingering finish. A surprisingly accessible wine from an excellent vintage. Should develop well with bottle age. Onkaparinga. A wonderful word. Plum and cherry, ripe and spicy, an earthy coal-like character. It’s firm and almost liqueur-like in intensity, with firm dusty tannin, and a dry plum and dried flower finish. Very good, but not quite as good as the other two single vineyard wines. From the Onkaparinga Hills, a parcel of dry-grown bush vines, fermented as whole clusters and aged in a single, larger-format cask. This parcel was planted in the early 1970s and it has a sappy feel (whole clusters) and bright, very pure raspberries and some leafy elements on offer, as well as blueberries. The palate has quite smooth and ripe tannins, holds a fresh edge (low pH) and delivers a similar combination of red and blue fruits as seen on the nose. A little, chewy stone pop at the finish. The song by Blondie, in their somewhat stilted version of ‘rap’, or the second coming? It’s a difficult choice, though I think I prefer the former.  The bottle I have is not the difficult cellaring shape shown here, more a traditional shape, albeit in thick heavyweight glass. And cork sealed, though nice corks they are.

Really exotic and spicy, ripe strawberry and raspberry, orange zest and gravel. It’s firm and dry, ultra-mineral feel to it, almost a chinotto/amaro character, pumice stone tannin, and a very long finish. Outstanding. And so much character. Throw your hands in the air! The top expression of grenache from Aphelion, this is a combination of Wait and Brini vineyards, both containing bush vines planted in the 1940s. This is a complex wine already, with a nose that’s so enticingly complex and detailed. It has bracken, sappy elements, berry pastry, spiced notes, raspberry, red plum and candied orange peel. The palate has a very plush, complete and seamless feel. This is so commanding, yet so deliciously appealing at once. Impressive poise, with long tannins that drive and frame the red and dark-berry fruit-soaked finish. Matured in a single, neutral demi-muid. Drink or hold. (98) NICK STOCK, www.jamessuckling.com

Beautifully aromatic with fresh red berry fruit and floral dried petal notes. The palate is a little reticent at first, but with time, reveals concentrated flavours wrapped up in exquisite, finely grained and carefully judged tannins. Terrific drive and length. Aromas of red cherries, cedar, dry brown spices, forest berries and wood, as well as rose-like perfume. It opens and aromatically enriches with some air. Plum and cherry, camphor, exotic spice and liquorice, a little dried rose perfume in the mix too. Bright and intense. Medium-bodied, plenty of flavour, rich dark fruit with orange peel and spice, firm almost tea-like tannin, moving to ripe strawberries with pepper on a long perfumed, slightly bitter radicchio finish. One of the most charming and gentle expressions of Martinborough Pinot Noir you'll find, with its depth of fruit akin to holding a heavy ball in the palm of your hand, such is its midpalate weight. There's an abundance of tannins, but they are as resolved as tannins get, lightly coating the palate. The fruit was picked a little earlier than usual due to the warmth of the season in a bid to preserve tension and also keep the alcohol level at a very reasonable 13%. The acidity provides freshness and precision, giving the wine length and shape. While primary fruit is not front and center, on the finish it blossoms, offering cherries, cinnamon and clove spice.
