Naturally fermented in 1800L stone amphora with little agitation aside from wetting the cap. 90 days on skins. An additional 8 months in amphora. This cuvée is akin to the finest pinot; svelte, detailed and uplifting. Aromas of sour cherry, raspberry, rosewater, mace and orange zest. The superior wine of 2019 here, or at least what I've tasted to date. Stunning. The tannins, growing with air and the next sip. The finish, jitterbug energetic, chiselled and chamois of texture. Deep crimson-purple; this is a magisterial wine, totally centred on black fruits, blackberry to the fore, dark cherry and licorice in support. 100 % Shiraz from a dry-grown Blewitt Springs vineyard planted in 1941 with roots deep in the maslin sand laid over ironstone. Hand-picked and destemmed but not crushed to retain 100 % whole-berries. Cold-soaked for two days, open-fermented, plunged daily and then basket-pressed to a mix of old and new French oak puncheons for 18 months maturation. 14.5 % alc/vol.

Onkaparinga. A wonderful word. Plum and cherry, ripe and spicy, an earthy coal-like character. It’s firm and almost liqueur-like in intensity, with firm dusty tannin, and a dry plum and dried flower finish. Very good, but not quite as good as the other two single vineyard wines. From the Onkaparinga Hills, a parcel of dry-grown bush vines, fermented as whole clusters and aged in a single, larger-format cask. This parcel was planted in the early 1970s and it has a sappy feel (whole clusters) and bright, very pure raspberries and some leafy elements on offer, as well as blueberries. The palate has quite smooth and ripe tannins, holds a fresh edge (low pH) and delivers a similar combination of red and blue fruits as seen on the nose. A little, chewy stone pop at the finish. Sum of the parts…

Kintsugi is the ancient Japanese art of “golden joinery”, the creation of enduring beauty from broken fragments of ancient pottery as they are pieced together with lacquer laced with gold.

It befits our desire to meticulously blend only our very best parcels of old vine fruit from a single year. In direct contrast with the Australian obsession to label single varietal wines, Kintsugi is the simply the best Southern Rhone inspired wine we can make in a year, no matter its components.

The whole, we hope, is greater than the sum of its parts.

Composition
An elegant, but deeply fruited wine, showing aromatic floral red fruit lift, and spice from old vine Grenache, built upon intense blue fruits and violets of dry grown Mataro and Shiraz. Layered and long this wine exhibits a tightly wound core of dense red berried crunchy fruit, framed by persistent sandy tannins, and bright acidity.

The song by Blondie, in their somewhat stilted version of ‘rap’, or the second coming? It’s a difficult choice, though I think I prefer the former.  The bottle I have is not the difficult cellaring shape shown here, more a traditional shape, albeit in thick heavyweight glass. And cork sealed, though nice corks they are.

Really exotic and spicy, ripe strawberry and raspberry, orange zest and gravel. It’s firm and dry, ultra-mineral feel to it, almost a chinotto/amaro character, pumice stone tannin, and a very long finish. Outstanding. And so much character. Throw your hands in the air! The top expression of grenache from Aphelion, this is a combination of Wait and Brini vineyards, both containing bush vines planted in the 1940s. This is a complex wine already, with a nose that’s so enticingly complex and detailed. It has bracken, sappy elements, berry pastry, spiced notes, raspberry, red plum and candied orange peel. The palate has a very plush, complete and seamless feel. This is so commanding, yet so deliciously appealing at once. Impressive poise, with long tannins that drive and frame the red and dark-berry fruit-soaked finish. Matured in a single, neutral demi-muid. Drink or hold. (98) NICK STOCK, www.jamessuckling.com
