No more flattening your palate with 110% oak, this is crunchy and fresh with a nod to its warm home in the Vale. Alex 'Boy Friday' is chief swirler and sniffer a title he self-bestowed and one we think gives you a good idea about what's going on at Sherrah.

    When we tasted this recently, we all cooed at the upfront blast of juicy fruit, sweet spice, and absolute slurpable nature of this Rose. Bliss! It's pure, crispy, plush and so delicious. Plenty of raspberry and red cherry fruit that is punctuated by drifting spice and crunchy acidity. Just proves that grenache is such a perfect varietal for rose. This is beach and BBQ ready baby!

    Richard and Malcolm Leask started what they call their "bottle project" in 2011 and which now has grown into a stonking, not-so-little wine brand out of the Mclaren Vale. They make a compliment of classic Mcclaren fair along with some brilliant "alt" varietals from Spain, Portugal and Italy. Pure and full of vitality there whole range is fantastic but the temp was one of our favourites.

    We couldn't agree more. There does seem to be a little bit of magic going on behind the scenes here. Certainly great vineyards play their part here but a lot has to be said for what Andre Bondar is doing with the wines. Chat with him and he always reveals a beautifully considered and thoughtful approach to wine making that shines through.

    Their fiano is spot on text-book style fiano but with a little extra flash of fruit and texture that is often either over-exaggerated or under-done in Italian examples. This version marries the varietals natural tendency to flesh out with a wonderful zip and freshness that pulls it together nicely. A touch of exotic tropical fruits and some lemony pith play off each other wonderfully. A little mineral twang keeps things interesting and while there is plenty of plush fruit it remains fresh and vibrant.

    Well I think Mike Bennie's review says it all. This is part of the new wave of South Australian producers with a new look of bright, gluggable and deceptively serious wines. No more flattening your palate with 110% oak, this is crunchy and fresh with a nod to it's warm home in the Vale. This is a winemaker to watch. PWS

    The bottle says ‘the king of the Vale’ which is directed probably at the variety shiraz, but I’d say, like our existing monarchy in Australia, it’s a vestige of past – all hail grenache! (and other red grapes).

    Whatever your take on MVale shiraz, this is one that has mojo. Indeed, it’s stellar. It’s rippling with tannin, sure, it’s all dark fruit, dried fruits, kirsch and choc-strawberries, but there’s grip and pucker, good spice, light green herbal detail and a long but fresh finish. It’s hearty, slurpy, heartland stuff, but done really well, effortless you could say, and easy to like. MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Front

    This was a delight and utterly delicious surprise. The funny thing was, that this wine was bought in by accident but we loved it so much we just had to have some. These are small batch, Mclaren Vale wines with a focus on freshness with Alex Sherrah heading the charge. We love what he is doing and know you will too.

    Lifted with peppery, sweet spice and bright fruit that is a mash-up of raspberry, black currant and blackberry all fused together. Forward and fleshy with lovely focus and full of energy. The palate is long and easy to enjoy with the blend providing plenty of interest and something a little different to the usual GSM coming out of the region. Top stuff!

    Naturally fermented in 1800L stone amphora with little agitation aside from wetting the cap. 90 days on skins. An additional 8 months in amphora. This cuvée is akin to the finest pinot; svelte, detailed and uplifting. Aromas of sour cherry, raspberry, rosewater, mace and orange zest. The superior wine of 2019 here, or at least what I've tasted to date. Stunning. The tannins, growing with air and the next sip. The finish, jitterbug energetic, chiselled and chamois of texture.     100 % Shiraz from a dry-grown Blewitt Springs vineyard planted in 1941 with roots deep in the maslin sand laid over ironstone. Hand-picked and destemmed but not crushed to retain 100 % whole-berries. Cold-soaked for two days, open-fermented, plunged daily and then basket-pressed to a mix of old and new French oak puncheons for 18 months maturation. 14.5 % alc/vol.

    Onkaparinga. A wonderful word. Plum and cherry, ripe and spicy, an earthy coal-like character. It’s firm and almost liqueur-like in intensity, with firm dusty tannin, and a dry plum and dried flower finish. Very good, but not quite as good as the other two single vineyard wines.     From the Onkaparinga Hills, a parcel of dry-grown bush vines, fermented as whole clusters and aged in a single, larger-format cask. This parcel was planted in the early 1970s and it has a sappy feel (whole clusters) and bright, very pure raspberries and some leafy elements on offer, as well as blueberries. The palate has quite smooth and ripe tannins, holds a fresh edge (low pH) and delivers a similar combination of red and blue fruits as seen on the nose. A little, chewy stone pop at the finish. Nuanced and elegant. Good now, but even better in a year or two. (95) NICK STOCK, www.jamessuckling.com
