Burgundy



The soils and vineyards of Burgundy have been very well defined thanks to the studious Monks a few hundred years ago - and the swathe of others who have picked up the baton since.

The Golden Slope (Cote D'or) is divided into two; the Cote du Nuit to the north and the Cote de Beaune to the south. Pinot noir dominates the Cote du Nuit as it loves the limestone nature of the soils and Chardonnay thrives in the heavier calcareous marl soils on the Cote de Beaune.

The essence of Burgundy comes down to the place where the vines are grown. The more definitive you can be (e.g. a single vineyard like Grand Cru or Premier Cru) then the higher the price you'll pay. A village wine, which will most likely be a blend of vineyards from within the village won't be as expensive as its origins are a little broader.

To the north, Chablis is an outpost. Lying closer to Champagne than the Cote d'Or, its marine fossil laden soils (Kimmeridgian clay) make scintillating renditions of chardonnay which age beautifully.
To the south the Cote Chalonnais, Maconnais and Beaujolais make wines that are easier on the pocket. There's some great value to be had here. A few different grapes are added to the mix including Gamay and Aligoté (as well as pinot noir and chardonnay).

Styles
The purity of chardonnay is on full display in a bottle of Chablis. Chiselled and tightly wound this is a crisp and salivating white. White Burgundy tends towards a riper heart but with spicy oak support.

    A relatively new label, the foundations of Luna Estate are two excellent vineyard sites – Eclipse, on the famed Martinborough Terraces, and Blue Rock, on Dry River Road, south of the Martinborough village. Martinborough is a region which excites us as New Zealand’s best for complex and varietal Pinot Noir, also raising excellent Chardonnay and Pinot Gris.

    Luna’s ethos is sustainable vineyard practices, and as minimal handling in the winery as possible, under the guidance of chief winemaker Joel Watson, whose previous work has included several vintages with the highly esteemed Curly Flat in Victoria’s Macedon Ranges.

    Presently with 25 hectares producing, a significant replanting program to bring 80% of production to Pinot Noir will eventually see the estate sitting around 44 hectares between the two sites. The single vineyard wines show the sites’ contrasts beautifully. PWS

    Dried rose and orange peel, a bit of truffle and spice, cherry and strawberry. Medium-bodied, fine chalky grip, all the strawberries dusted with spice lends a bit of prettiness, though there’s bass here too, the finish autumnal, savoury and spicy.     Domaine de L'Eveche Cote Chalonnaise Clos de l'Eveche 2020
    A small family run Domaine of just over 12 hectares, purchased by the Joussier family in 1985, with vines initially known to have been cultivated in the middle ages, situated in Saint Denis de Vaux, tucked away in the heart of the Cote Chalonnaise “value” area of  Burgundy.

    Clos de l'Eveche all sourced from a hillside site on clay and limestone soils with grapes destemmed and fermented in open tanks. There is large 1400 litre oak barrels use for ageing that mellow this wines out so beautifully.

    Lots of bright red fruits and a raspberry hit intermingled with soft peppercorn spice and a gentle earthy tug. It's generous and unfurls its up-front fruit slowly over your palate. Its such an inviting drink and there was plenty of ooh's and ah's from the tasting table. Soft minerally tannins give frame the fruit nicely and overall there is a lovely sense of ease about this wine that gives it so much immediate appeal. Its how much? Must be a mistake! Stellar value!

    Domaine Collotte Fixin Champstion 2016
    Made from vines planted in the early 1980's this wine shows lovely aromatics and remarkable finesse for the appellation. Fixin, just to the north of Gevrey Chambertin, is renowned for producing sturdy, rich Pinots yet here we have a wine with much more finesse than one expects.

    The extra couple of years in bottle has done wonders for this wine and it's sitting in such a good spot. Underbrush and forest floor here sprinkled with currents, cranberry and baking spice alongside a peppery hit and savoury, wild herbs. Mellow and round but with plenty of bounce. There is a real joie-du-vie here that is hard to resist. A beautiful introduction to the wines of Fixin.

    Domaine Philippe Collotte Marsannay Les Grasses Tetes 2019
    From two parcels of old vines; one based on Crinoidal limestone (known in France as Calcaire à Entroques), the other Comblanchien.

    This wine is perfumed and pure with real depth, lovely minerality in an elegant and focused style. Are refined palate that is persistent and with nice drive but never comes off hard or pushy. Its velvety tannins mesh nicely with the small foresty-fruit mix carrying it to a long and satisfying finish. Seamless and classy this is all you could want from a wine like this and more.

    Aromas of red cherries, cedar, dry brown spices, forest berries and wood, as well as rose-like perfume. It opens and aromatically enriches with some air. The palate has all the trademark layering of smooth tannins and a smoothly ripe ball of fresh red cherries. Assertive drive to the finish. (96) NICK STOCK, jamessuckling.com

    35% new oak and 35% whole bunch.
    Plum and cherry, camphor, exotic spice and liquorice, a little dried rose perfume in the mix too. Bright and intense. Medium-bodied, plenty of flavour, rich dark fruit with orange peel and spice, firm almost tea-like tannin, moving to ripe strawberries with pepper on a long perfumed, slightly bitter radicchio finish.     A complex wine from the outset with gently reductive notes and modern oak spice threading into fresh cherry, spiced bread, rose, forest wood and blood orange, as well as darker cherry notes. The palate tells the full story. This displays real power and definition with clear-cut and powerful tannins. The intensity of the red-cherry fruit is impressive and the way it occupies the finish with length and uplift is the thing that defines great pinot noir per se. Strong vintage.     Elegant, seamless pinot noir with fragrant, floral, red rose, dark cherry, anise, spice and restrained savoury and fresh herb characters. It's a complex medley of appealing flavours supported by an ethereal texture and a lingering finish. A surprisingly accessible wine from an excellent vintage. Should develop well with bottle age.     Beautifully aromatic with fresh red berry fruit and floral dried petal notes. The palate is a little reticent at first, but with time, reveals concentrated flavours wrapped up in exquisite, finely grained and carefully judged tannins. Terrific drive and length.     One of the most charming and gentle expressions of Martinborough Pinot Noir you'll find, with its depth of fruit akin to holding a heavy ball in the palm of your hand, such is its midpalate weight. There's an abundance of tannins, but they are as resolved as tannins get, lightly coating the palate. The fruit was picked a little earlier than usual due to the warmth of the season in a bid to preserve tension and also keep the alcohol level at a very reasonable 13%. The acidity provides freshness and precision, giving the wine length and shape. While primary fruit is not front and center, on the finish it blossoms, offering cherries, cinnamon and clove spice.     There are three barrels of the 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Corbeaux this year and it is due for bottling around February (indeed, there was a bit of reduction on the nose). It comes from a parcel adjacent to the lieu-dit of Mazis-Bas. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent red cherry and strawberry fruit, grainy in texture, a Corbeaux that exerts a gentle grip with impressive tension and sense of energy on the finish. This has great potential and may well surpass the 2015. NEAL MARTIN

    First vintage 2015, from the same supplier as the Gevrey village wine. The parcel is right next to Mazis-Chambertin and Eyre sees some similarities to the Mazis fruit she used to have at Domaine Newman. Around 15% whole bunch. Three barrels, one new. Barrel sample. Eyre notes that it tends to be a bit reductive in the beginning, so it is bottled later than her other wines.
    Darker and more savoury than the Savigny Vergelesses with a light charry note that is part reduction and part oak, I suspect. Succulent and lightly chewy texture though the tannins are very fine. Extremely moreish. The juicy fruit escapes around the edges and gives a long finish but a bit flattened by the oak at the moment. Wait. JULIA HARDING MW

    More aromatic than the Caillerets, offering warmer, more demonstrative scents and flavors of redcurrant, tobacco, smoke and subtle spices. A spicy, inviting, fine-grained wine from a sunny spot protected from wind, with the iron element in the soil providing volume. This mellow premier cru boasts a seductive sweetness (and 13.6% natural alcohol). Finishes with nicely integrated, horizontal tannins and lovely length. Bouley refers to this vineyard as his baby (he was actually 14 years old when these vines were planted), noting that the site "has all the elements to make great, unctuous, red-soil wine.     An overtly floral-suffused nose displays a lovely array of spice elements on the essence of red berry fruit aromas. I very much like the mid-palate mouthfeel of the sappy medium-bodied flavors that terminate in a powerful, rustic and mocha-inflected finish. This is quite a robust Vosne villages that will require at least some patience. BURGHOUND

    Always one of the wines of the range. Exhibits all the kirsch cherry and silken texture of a classic Vosne with the addition of some nice Asian spice coming from the 50% whole cluster. MICHAEL McNAMARA

    The rich and relatively full-bodied flavors possess excellent power and punch along with outstanding persistence and very impressive depth. As one would reasonably expect with a quality example of Lavaut, this is built-to-age and in contrast to the Champeaux, one that will require extended cellaring to fully mature. 'Outstanding' BURGHOUND
    The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru is reticent and tightly wound at this stage. That should not be much of an issue in a few years, once the wine starts to enter the first part of its drinking window. There is plenty of depth to the dark cherry, tobacco, mint, herb and earthy tones. Unfortunately, there are just two barrels to go around. The 2016 needs time to incorporate all of its oak, but readers should not plan on opening bottles anytime soon. STEPHEN TANZER

    (from the north side of Pommard above Les Grands Epenots on active limestone soil; vinified with one-third whole clusters and aged in one-third new oak): Good dark red. Tight aromas of black cherry, redcurrant and rust (there's a bit of iron in the soil here as well), lifted by a floral quality. Savory and fine-grained, with red berry flavors enlivened by saline minerality. Not a big wine but offers an attractive blend of sweet, savory and acidic elements. This minerally, salty wine finishes with big, mouth-dusting tannins. STEPHEN TANZER
     
    the middle weight flavors possess a similar mouth feel to the Taillepieds with fine delineation and more subtle minerality on the mildly austere finish that flashes a hint of dryness though I doubt that it will last. BURGHOUND

    Sappy, aromatic nose combines red raspberry, cherry and smoky minerality. The silkiest and smoothest of these 2016s but with its vibrant cherry and red berry flavors given precision and lift by a firm spine of calcaire minerality. Intense, sweet and utterly suave wine with a mounting finish featuring noble tannins that reach the front teeth. This is typically a very crystalline style of wine (without the volume of Rugiens-Bas) thanks to its rocky energy, and in 2016 it maintains juiciness and precision without coming off as austere. As with the family's holding in Volnay Caillerets, these wines were mostly spared by the frost. STEPHEN TANZER, vinous.com
