A trip to the Hunter is not really complete without a drive up to Tyrrell’s cellar door, with the Old Hut on your right, and the beautiful Brokenback Ranges looming over yonder. With the buzz of the insects in summer, the haze and the heat, it’s a great Australian wine experience.

Coffee bean and earth, touch of vanilla oak, boysenberry/blueberry. Fuller bodied style, got some grip in the tannin, a wee bit of warmth, but great flavour and expansion in the mouth, and a clove oil aftertaste. A bit of grunt here, and plenty to get your teeth into. It doesn’t have the finesse of some of the other wines, but it sure has character. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

Derwent Valley (60%) Tamar Valley (30%) & East Coast (10%). Has a bit of whole bunch, and some carbonic maceration. I'm not quite sure on carbonic in Pinot, though it does make the wines kind of pretty, kind of like dogs and their owners here, maybe. Floral and spicy, quite pretty, also a bit meaty, with bright red fruit and almond. Light to medium-bodied, frisky and fresh, clear and precise, raspberry, cranberry flavour and crunch to acidity, fine but firm graphite tannin, and a tight and vibrant finish of excellent length. If you're into a more delicate/delicious style of Pinot Noir, then this should suit you very nicely. I like it. GARY WALSH, winefront.com

A complex wine from the outset with gently reductive notes and modern oak spice threading into fresh cherry, spiced bread, rose, forest wood and blood orange, as well as darker cherry notes. The palate tells the full story. This displays real power and definition with clear-cut and powerful tannins. The intensity of the red-cherry fruit is impressive and the way it occupies the finish with length and uplift is the thing that defines great pinot noir per se. Strong vintage. Elegant, seamless pinot noir with fragrant, floral, red rose, dark cherry, anise, spice and restrained savoury and fresh herb characters. It's a complex medley of appealing flavours supported by an ethereal texture and a lingering finish. A surprisingly accessible wine from an excellent vintage. Should develop well with bottle age. Nick Glaetzer began his wine making journey with his family in the Barossa Valley, following with vintages in the Languedoc, the Pfalz, Margaret River, the Riverland, Sunraysia, the Hunter Valley and Burgundy. In 2005 Nick landed in Tasmania, searching for cool-climate, super-premium vineyards; perfect for crafting pinot noir, riesling and savory shiraz.

Established in 2008, Glaetzer-Dixon is now an eminent Tasmanian wine maker. The Glaetzer family of winemakers has roots in the Barossa Valley dating back to 1888. In 2011 Nick was named "young wine maker of the year" by Gourmet traveller magazine

Also in 2011 Nick's 2010 Mon Pere Shiraz was awarded the prestigious Jimmy Watson Memorial trophy at the Royal Melbourne Wine Show – the first time in the trophy's 50 year history for a Tasmanian wine.

Cool-grown, but not to the point of exaggeration. The 10th consecutive release of this wine grown in the Coal River district, and one of the best thanks to its balance and ripe plum/blackberry fruit. Savoury tannins complete the picture. JAMES HALLIDAY

Hand-picked, open-fermented, matured in new and 1yo 2700l French casks for 15 months. This is opulent and rich, bringing back memories of '59, '61, '65 and ;66 ('65 the standout). The black fruits are wrapped in velvet, the oak and tannins watching on enviously. A wonderful wine with its own part of history. JAMES HALLIDAY

Here’s a ‘classic’ Vat 9, and a ‘classic’ Hunter red. In fact, it would be hard to get more ‘classic’. Has a lovely violet and vanilla perfume, a dusting of pepper and spice, dried herb, boysenberry and raspberry, a lick of fine powdery tannin, bright pippy raspberry acidity, subtle earthiness, and a pretty red fruited finish of clean length and precision. Beautifully aromatic with fresh red berry fruit and floral dried petal notes. The palate is a little reticent at first, but with time, reveals concentrated flavours wrapped up in exquisite, finely grained and carefully judged tannins. Terrific drive and length. Aromas of red cherries, cedar, dry brown spices, forest berries and wood, as well as rose-like perfume. It opens and aromatically enriches with some air. 35% new oak and 35% whole bunch.
Plum and cherry, camphor, exotic spice and liquorice, a little dried rose perfume in the mix too. Bright and intense. Medium-bodied, plenty of flavour, rich dark fruit with orange peel and spice, firm almost tea-like tannin, moving to ripe strawberries with pepper on a long perfumed, slightly bitter radicchio finish. One of the most charming and gentle expressions of Martinborough Pinot Noir you'll find, with its depth of fruit akin to holding a heavy ball in the palm of your hand, such is its midpalate weight. There's an abundance of tannins, but they are as resolved as tannins get, lightly coating the palate. The fruit was picked a little earlier than usual due to the warmth of the season in a bid to preserve tension and also keep the alcohol level at a very reasonable 13%. The acidity provides freshness and precision, giving the wine length and shape. While primary fruit is not front and center, on the finish it blossoms, offering cherries, cinnamon and clove spice.
