A brilliant wine, Peay's 2017 Pinot Noir Estate Ama offers an explosion of sweet red/purplish berry fruit, floral notes and spice, all with a hint of blood orange-infused acidity that gives the wine vibrancy. The 2017 Pinot Noir Estate Scallop Shelf is distinguished by its bright, focused personality and energy. As it often is, the Scallop Shelf is a wine of reserve and tension, showing plenty of savory and mineral character and less overt fruit than some of the other wines in the range. The 2017 is likely to require at least a few years to come into its own, but it is super-impressive. ANTONIO GALLONI

Idlewild's 2015 Arneis Fox Hill Vineyard is another deep, expressive wine. Varietal aromatics open up first, followed by generous orchard fruit, white peach and floral notes. Drink this inviting Arneis over the next few years. ANTONIO GALLONI

The 2016 Pinot Noir Savoy Vineyard, from Anderson Valley, is the most accessible and open of these Pinots. Bright red cherry, plum and orange peel are all nicely pushed forward. Although not as complex or pedigreed as Peay's Sonoma Coast wines, the Savoy is tasty and very easy to like. ANTONIO GALLONI

The 2019 Pinot Noir (Sta. Rita Hills) is a very beautiful and expressive wine. Blue/purplish fruit, lavender and spice open in a mysterious, sensual Pinot loaded with class. Vineyards site are Domaine de la Côte, La Rinconada and Sanford & Benedict, which is to say about as good as it gets.ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous.com

The 2018 Pinot Noir Estate Ama is dark, bold and ample, with tremendous density and more stature than I am used to seeing. Black cherry, lavender, spice, mocha, licorice and menthol all flesh out in this decidedly big, deep wine. The 2018 Ama is undeniably powerful and also so long on character. ANTONIO GALLONI

The 2019 Pinot Noir Estate Ama is a rich, ample wine. Rose petal, blood orange sweet red cherry. Racy, succulent and perfumed, the Ama is one of the most approachable Pinots in this range, as it so often is. In 2019, the Ama is marked by a strong red cherry, blood orange and spice character. This is an especially savory, mineral Pinot, with the fruit moved more into the background. Ridge’s 2017 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is a fabulous choice for readers who want a Monte Bello fix now, without having to wait. Supple, radiant and silky, with tremendous balance, the 2017 is just flat-out delicious and utterly irresistible. In Italy, the house wine is often light, fresh, aromatic, and firmly structured so as to pair beautifully next a wide range of foods. That is the inspiration for The Bird. Black cherries, anise, fresh strawberries, freshly turned soil, and spicy floral tones highlight the aromatic profile. The mouthfeel is fresh and bright, leans towards a touch of mouth filling richness, and then quickly moves to a clean and firm food driven finish. IDLEWILD

The Gibson Ranch is the most historical section of McDowell Valley Vineyards and includes these 100+ year old dry farmed treasures. The winemaking is our interpretation of the Ramato style Pinot Grigio's of Northeast Italy; in other words, this isn't quite a Rose nor is it a Red wine. Rather, it is a skin and stem fermented Grenache Gris that shows both fresh delicacy and structure.

Bright pink. Perfumed aromas of raspberry, cherry, blood orange and flowers, with a spicy nuance adding vivacity. Shows very good energy on the palate, offering intense red and dark berry flavors sharpened by juicy acidity. Finishes minerally and firm, with strong punch and lingering spiciness.  JOSH REYNOLDS
 

Golden Delicious apples, yellow peaches, musk melon, and honey greet the nose and persist through to the palate. Medium acidity is balanced by pleasant fleshiness, finishing very clean with a hint of minerality.

For complexity, completeness, and balance, we achieve a diversity of ripeness by using the traditional method of harvesting the fruit a number of different times during the ripening period. The earlier harvests contribute acidity and minerality, and the later harvests contribute flesh and richness. We whole-cluster press all of the grapes, then ferment and age the wine in seasoned French oak barrels, with only native yeast. No battonage (lees stirring) or racking. We allow two-fifths of the barrels to go through malo-lactic fermentation. MATTHIASSON

35% Dolcetto, 35% Barbera, 30% Nebbiolo
From Fox Hill Vineyard in Mendocino, California. This is a blend of dolcetto, barbera and nebbiolo. Winemaker Sam Bilbro takes his back country vineyard very seriously; the site rich with interesting varieties. Bilbro is a less-is-more winemaker, preferring natural fermentation, low new-no new oak, low input in winery. A producer to keep a beady eye on.

Peppery spice, clove, black currants, plum jam, Campari, earth. Wonderful perfume. Exotic, but anchoring you into something Italianate. The palate is breezy and crisp, dosed up with cherry-berry crunchiness and another hit of pleasing amaro sour-sweetness. Light powdery tannin sits on chomp of fruit. The 2018 Estate Pinot Noir is an incredible value this vintage, with loads of floral aromas over pure, bright red cherries, dried cranberries and rhubarb with accents of tangerine and dust. The 2018 Pinot Noir is pretty and perfumed, with lovely aromatic presence and tons of immediate appeal. Dried flowers, cedar, mint and tobacco all grace this mid-weight, perfumed Pinot. The Cep Pinot is all declassified Peay fruit, so it will give readers a very good idea of what the vintage holds for the estate Pinots. The 2013 Dolcetto Fox Hill Vineyard is fabulous. Dark red and purplish fruit, spices, menthol and tobacco meld together in the glass, with firm Dolcetto tannins that emerge on the mid-palate and finish. Bright red. Cranberry, cherry, anise and fresh herbs on the nose. Juicy and light on its feet, with a distinctly sappy quality to the brisk, dry flavors of cherry, red berries and licorice. No obvious sign of oak here (it was aged in neutral French barrels). Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and a touch of dryness. I find this very easy to drink. STEPHEN TANZER, Vinous Media
