Luna Martinborough Eclipse Pinot Noir 2018Dark cherry, ginger snap biscuits, earth and potpourri. A bit of throb and depth here, plenty of spice and damp earth, succulence of dark cherry and cranberry crunch, tannin wide-grained and sure, assertive finish with a bit of the old ‘mineral’ feel as it goes. Very good. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front2018Pinot noirNew Zealand435$58.00 As low as $52.20
Luna Martinborough Blue Rock Pinot Noir 2018
A relatively new label, the foundations of Luna Estate are two excellent vineyard sites – Eclipse, on the famed Martinborough Terraces, and Blue Rock, on Dry River Road, south of the Martinborough village. Martinborough is a region which excites us as New Zealand’s best for complex and varietal Pinot Noir, also raising excellent Chardonnay and Pinot Gris.
Luna’s ethos is sustainable vineyard practices, and as minimal handling in the winery as possible, under the guidance of chief winemaker Joel Watson, whose previous work has included several vintages with the highly esteemed Curly Flat in Victoria’s Macedon Ranges.
Presently with 25 hectares producing, a significant replanting program to bring 80% of production to Pinot Noir will eventually see the estate sitting around 44 hectares between the two sites. The single vineyard wines show the sites’ contrasts beautifully. PWS
Dried rose and orange peel, a bit of truffle and spice, cherry and strawberry. Medium-bodied, fine chalky grip, all the strawberries dusted with spice lends a bit of prettiness, though there’s bass here too, the finish autumnal, savoury and spicy. It’s sure of itself, and will likely roll out with more time in bottle. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front2018Pinot noirNew Zealand435$58.00 As low as $52.20
Novum Pinot Noir 2019I like this. A lot! Atypically NZ in its structural meld of fineboned tannins, sandy latticework of acidity and something, salty and moreish. The structure is the totem, sure, but the core of subtle fruit creeps up: damson plum, bloodstone, bing cherry, orange zest and a cinnamon twirl of oak. There is nothing too sweet, cloying or overly exuberant about this. The
voice is one of measured, mid-weighted refinement. A benchmark for the region. (94), NED GOODWIN, MW Australia
Bright, fresh and fruity pinot noir with plum, cherry and berry flavours, together with a suggestion of dried herbs and
spicy oak characters. The wine has a pleasingly smooth texture and gentle, fruity acidity that helps drive a lengthy finish. A distinctive, stylish pinot noir. (94) BOB CAMPBELL, MW New Zealand2019Pinot noirNew Zealand434$60.00 As low as $54.00

Burn Cottage Moonlight Race Pinot Noir 2018
Rarely is a Pinot Noir from Central Otago so supple, delicious and easy to drink as this little number. Cherry and squishy berries, dried herb and plenty of spice, a little fresh mint and rose perfume. Tannin is fleshy and plentiful, yet soft and gently mouth-coating. Finish is all spice and strawberry with a subtle meaty character, leaving emery board tannin in its wake. Love it. Great drinking now. Charteris The Winter Vineyard Otago Pinot Noir 2014Only 250 dozen produced and held in the winery for five years. From patches of deeper soil on the vineyard 36% whole bunch, 64% whole berry. Juicy plum and cherry fruit has a plushness along with the Charteris hallmark of elegance. (97) JAMES HALLIDAY
Punchy, oak-laden, chewy pinot of vin de garde, long cellaring feel. Restrained, tight, quietly powerful. Charming in tannins, ripples of understated dark cherry fruit, ferrous character and earthiness on the quiet. Some savouriness and malt creeping in. Feels like it needs some more time. Valli Bannockburn Vineyard Pinot Noir 2018
Fragrant, appealing aroma with quite a floral and violet emphasis, while the palate was more savoury with crushed herb and grape stems adding extra interest to cherry and berry flavours. An ethereal wine with a backbone of fine tannins - should age well BOB CAMPBELL MW
The rich and fleshy red plums here are irresistible, as are the aromas of ripe red cherries and raspberries with a perfumed, grassy and spicy edge. This has such appealing and succulent style that it will be really hard not to drink now. JAMES SUCKLING
The 2018 Bannockburn Vineyard Pinot Noir features slightly chunkier fruit than found in Valli's bottlings from cooler regions (Waitaki, Gibbston). That may actually appeal more to consumers looking for a slightly bigger, richer style of Pinot Noir. Black cherries and notes of baking spices are framed by ripe tannins and crisp acids, and there's just a suggestion of cedary oak (it was aged in 30% new French pièces). It's smooth and supple on the finish, making it approachable now, yet it should age well for a decade or so. WINE ADVOCATE2018Pinot noirNew Zealand373
Valli Bendigo Vineyard Pinot Noir 2019Distinctive, powerful, ripe, pure and intriguing. Punnets of raspberries and black current, wild thyme and rocky countryside scents. Baking spices of oak and toasty wood, then dark velvet roses. Tense and dry, taut and fruity, very young and tight in texture. Fruit flavours mirror the nose, tannins are firm and chalky, acidity in abundance. A fantastic wine but needs to be cellared to develop more complexity and fuse the attributes together. Valli Gibbston Vineyard Pinot Noir 2018
Made with 30% whole-bunches in fermentation, which adds a spicy dimension to this elegant and quite complex pinot noir while leaving access to bright cherry, fresh herb, slate-mineral and spicy oak flavours. Good now but worth waiting a few years. BOB CAMPBELL MW
Plenty of fresh red cherries and there's a very rich, supple and fleshy feel to this wine, a shining example from the warmer, 2018 season. It offers such ample, fleshy, red and dark cherries, in a sweeping wrap of plush tannins. Succulent and juicy finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap. JAMES SUCKLING
When the weather is just right-typically warm years-Gibbston can excel. Valli's 2018 Gibbston Vineyard Pinot Noir offers up a stunning array of herbal-floral aromas, hinting at roses, tea and mint, all backed by a core of red cherries. It's medium-bodied, silky and fine, with plentiful (but ripe) tannins. The 31% new French oak is scarcely noticeable, submerged under the waves of fruit-driven complexity, and the 30% whole-bunch component is similarly well integrated. What a beauty! Valli Bendigo Vineyard Pinot Noir 2018
Big, solidly-structured pinot noir that shows the influence of a warm site, ripe vintage and 50% whole-bunches in fermentation. Seriously solid wine that's a bit locked in by tannins right now but promises to reveal ever-increasing spicy complexity as it ages. BOB CAMPBELL MW
Aromas of violet flowers, spiced plums and blueberries with background, spiced wood, leading to a palate that has a very fleshy, succulent and zesty core of ripe dark cherries, fine tannin and a plush, supple finish. Drink now. Screw cap. JAMES SUCKLING
The fullest-bodied Valli Pinot (from the warmest subregion), the 2018 Bendigo Vineyard Pinot Noir boasts ebullient black cherry and blackberry fruit. Medium to full-bodied, with hints of cocoa, clove and a bit of dusty-rose character, it's big but not lacking elegance or complexity, finishing with silky tannins and admirable length. Valli Waitaki Vineyard Pinot Noir 2018
Pure, vibrant pinot noir with cherry, floral, rose petal, chalk-mineral, five spice, fresh herb and nutty oak flavours. A delicately-perfumed and slightly closed wine with obvious cellaring potential BOB CAMPBELL MW
This cooler area, in a warmer vintage, has worked a treat with this taut, focused and compact pinot. Fresh red cherries and sappy allure on the nose, moving to a palate that has almost chalky, compact tannins and a very succulent and detailed, fresh finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap JAMES SUCKLING
Smoky, meaty notes from the 30% new Mercurey barrels accent the nose of the 2018 Waitaki Vineyard Pinot Noir, but it's by no means one-dimensional. It also offers up hints of roses, cherries and clove. Medium-bodied, silky and elegant on the palate, it lingers teasingly on the finish, alternating between fruity and savory characters, both wrapped around a graphite-laced backbone. Fromm Quarters Vineyard Pinot Noir 2016Full, even, light ruby-red colour with some depth and light garnet hues on the edge. The nose is softly full and gently voluminous with a rounded core of dark-red berry fruit harmoniously melded with subtle notes of fresh and dark herbs and lifted red florals. The nose is expressed with softness, delicacy and detail. Medium-full bodied, the palate is full and accessible with sweetly rich, mouthfilling flavours of dark-red berry fruit intermixed with fragrant dark herbs and dark-red florals. The fruit is succulent, and balanced by fine, grainy-textured tannin structure that provides plenty of mouthfeel, presence and fine grip. Soft, lacy acidity lends energy and the wine carries to a long, sweet, red-fruited finish. This is a mouthfilling Pinot Noir with succulent red berry fruit and subtle notes of herbs and florals with plenty of texture and presence. Fromm Cuvee H Pinot Noir 2016Named after our winemaker Hätsch Kalberer, this wine reflects his 25 years of knowledge and understanding of several great Marlborough terroirs. A thoughtful composite of our five individual single vineyard wines, Cuvée “H” expresses a winery signature. It is the best Pinot we feel we can make and represents what we appreciate most in fine Pinot Noir. We do not strive to be the biggest and loudest on the block, but instead look for a complete and refined wine. Cuvée “H” is very much built with longevity in mind, however this does not preclude early drinking appeal. Tasting Note This wine has a beguiling prettiness with underpinning depth and complexity. It opens with a bright kirsch character before revealing darker blue fruits. There is silky spice and a hint of charcuterie savouriness built atop of lifting minerality. The palate shows good fruit weight, ripe flavours and an effortless structure. The wine’s tannins are well layered and are complimented by balanced acidity and subtle well integrated oak, all driving the wine through to a long, mouth-watering finish. Short description Dark plums and blueberries with aromatic spice and brambly savouriness. The palate is concentrated, layered and textural with fine tannins and a long and generous finish. Ata Rangi McCrone Pinot Noir 2017This wine is made from a cooler, more clay-heavy block than Ata Rangi's other organically farmed sites. The result is a Pinot brimming with personality, poise and deliciousness. The cranberry, sour cherry and wild strawberry fruit are radiant, streaked with graphite and sunbaked clay. Cocktail bitters, soy sauce, violet and rose round out a nose. The silky palate is tightly structured with talc-like tannins interlacing tart, juicy fruit. This is New Zealand Pinot Noir at its finest, able to be enjoyed now-2040. (98) WINE ENTHUSIAST
This is packed with bright red-cherry aromas and has a sheen of rose-like flowers across the nose, which is somewhat of an Ata Rangi signature. Some light earth and forest wood as well. Fresh and complex. The palate has intensely defined tannins that deliver impressively structured style with crisp red-cherry and raspberry flavors, as well as red plum to close. A powerful McCrone (97) NICK STOCK, jamessuckling.com

Ata Rangi Pinot Noir 2018
Aromas of red cherries, cedar, dry brown spices, forest berries and wood, as well as rose-like perfume. It opens and aromatically enriches with some air. The palate has all the trademark layering of smooth tannins and a smoothly ripe ball of fresh red cherries. Assertive drive to the finish. (96) NICK STOCK, jamessuckling.com
35% new oak and 35% whole bunch.
Plum and cherry, camphor, exotic spice and liquorice, a little dried rose perfume in the mix too. Bright and intense. Medium-bodied, plenty of flavour, rich dark fruit with orange peel and spice, firm almost tea-like tannin, moving to ripe strawberries with pepper on a long perfumed, slightly bitter radicchio finish. I like this bit of extra tannin activity in 2018. Good stuff. (95) GARY WALSH, The Wine Front2018Pinot noirNew Zealand435
