Gianfranco Alessandria Barbera d'Alba 2019The Gianfranco Alessandria 2019 Barbera d'Alba is a tart and punchy expression, with bright cherry and a dusting of crushed aspirin or limestone. The wine touches down on the palate with just the right fruit weight and intensity, showing a mid-weight texture and nice acidity to keep the palate revived and fresh. This is such a versatile and natural foodie wine to pair with any hearty home-cooked meal, especially something buttery and French. Some 15,000 bottles were made. Correggia Barbera Bricco Marun 2017
This is a classy single vineyard barbera. From 45-65 year old densely planted vines, the Marun was the brainchild of Matteo Correggia. He sourced fruit from sandy soils at the top of the hill with a sunny exposition and good air flow to stifle vine disease.
Heady and jubilant aromas welcome you in to a core of velvety richness. Dark chocolate, black berries and licorice ebb and flow, rounding out the mouth with a very smooth delivery. This is a pedigreed wine where everything just seems to fall into place as the wine unfolds. This is hard to resist in its youth, though it will age beautifully for a few years. Bera Barbera d’Alba 2019The vineyard has been the heart of the philosophy at Bera since the first generation began tending the rolling hills of Neviglie just south of Barbaresco township in the 50's. Now the estate owns just over 30 hectares of prime growing land around the communes of Neviglie, Neive and Barbaresco, with the incredible new addition of perhaps the most revered vineyard in all of Barbaresco; Rabaja.
In the winery the production remains simple, honest and traditionalist Piemontese; long macerations, large neutral oak and minimal intervention, with the aim of expressing the earth and the air of the Langhe in every one of the wines produced here.
We have always been big fans of the Barberra and while they Barbaresco is great and no doubt the Moscato their flagship we can't get enough of this wine. Ther is a nice focuse to the spicy wild fruits that mingle between dark berry and red crunchy and wild. The typical soft, fleshy palate that glides along to a satisfying finish. Cigliuti Campass Barbera 2017A real stand out, the 2017 Barbera d'Alba Campass is laced with the essence of blue and purplish fruit, spice, dried herbs, licorice, lavender and menthol. Unctuous and rich in feel, the 2017 has so much to offer. Like the Serraboella Barbera, the Campass is a bit slender relative to the norm, but there are no hard edges. This is such a pretty wine. Idlewild The Bird 2014In Italy, the house wine is often light, fresh, aromatic, and firmly structured so as to pair beautifully next a wide range of foods. That is the inspiration for The Bird. Black cherries, anise, fresh strawberries, freshly turned soil, and spicy floral tones highlight the aromatic profile. The mouthfeel is fresh and bright, leans towards a touch of mouth filling richness, and then quickly moves to a clean and firm food driven finish. Marchesi Alfieri La Tota Barbera d'Asti 2019 (Screwcap)Unashamedly one of my favourite releases of the year. La Tota is up there with the best of Barbera which is up there with my favourite wines to actually drink. By that I mean, drink, not talk about but drink. With friends, food, family. The 2019 is cooler, brighter and snappier than the last few years. It hits a lighter blue fruit and tart red berry spectrum with plenty of lift and perfume to the aromatics. Cool, fresh, long and plump in the mouth. There is the volume Mario seems to capture every year but it’s a little more reigned in, more of a lively feel. Spanking. Absolutely spanking! Idlewild The Bird 201535% Dolcetto, 35% Barbera, 30% Nebbiolo
From Fox Hill Vineyard in Mendocino, California. This is a blend of dolcetto, barbera and nebbiolo. Winemaker Sam Bilbro takes his back country vineyard very seriously; the site rich with interesting varieties. Bilbro is a less-is-more winemaker, preferring natural fermentation, low new-no new oak, low input in winery. A producer to keep a beady eye on.
Peppery spice, clove, black currants, plum jam, Campari, earth. Wonderful perfume. Exotic, but anchoring you into something Italianate. The palate is breezy and crisp, dosed up with cherry-berry crunchiness and another hit of pleasing amaro sour-sweetness. Light powdery tannin sits on chomp of fruit. It’s bloody delicious, intriguing, smashable. MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Front 20162015Barbera, Dolcetto, NebbioloUSA362$54.00 As low as $48.60
Erba Volant Chinato 750mlThis is where it all began for Sergio and Lorenzo. Both being grape-growers and winemakers, most of the botanicals, fruit and grapes/wine for their products are sourced within the Nizza zone in Monferrato. Unlike Barolo Chinato, the Erba Volant Chinato is based on Barbera, a variety regarded most at home in Nizza, and one that works superbly due to its refreshing brightness and acidity.
Blended with their in-house mix of aromatic herbs, including cardo gobbo di Nizza Monferrato (a regional vegetable - also called 'hunchback thistle' due to the cultivation technique - and a key component of bagna cauda). After around 9 months of maceration, the herbs and spices (along with pure alcohol and sugar) are added to the Barbera. This has notes of bitter orange, anise, cinnamon and a delicate touch of vanilla. 16% alc.Barbera, BittersItaly457$57.00 As low as $51.30
Paolo Scavino Vino da Tavolo Rosso 2019Paolo Scavino owns 29 hectares entirely in the Barolo area and works on 20 Barolo historical crus located in Castiglione Falletto, Barolo, La Morra, Novello, Serralunga d'Alba, Verduno and Roddi. The Scavino family distinguishes itself from the beginning by their scrupulous care of the vineyards and passion for terroir. Their core beliefs is the supremacy of the viticulture above the oenology therefore the focus is the care of the vines in order to grow ripe and healthy grapes. In winemaking minimal and equal intervention are sought, to preserve natural diversities, terroir.
While they may be well know for their excellent Barolo this wine is always one that sucks us in when we try it. Nebbiolo from younger vines and those that don't quite make the cut go into this delicious Piemontese red. This is a match made in heaven with Nebbiolo's firey tannin and acid tempered by the plush and juicy barbera. It's aromatically lifted with a touch of bitumen and earth to the cruncy red fruits. Pretty and lithe but with lovely sweet red fruits. This is so easy to drink and wonderfully balanced. Its such a delicious drink and screams for a hearty Italian pasta.
