Pierre Menard Clos de Mailles Anjou Blanc 2017
After studying wine in the Agronomic school of Angers, Pierre travelled the world to learn about the different processes and made wine in Canada, New Zealand and Hungary. Only in his late twenties, Pierre started to produce wine in the Layon in 2013. Since his first vintage Pierre's wines have been met with critical acclaim.
The Clos des Mailles comes from three parcels in the vineyard; one is 25 years old, one 100 years, and the other 8 years. You won't find any botrytis character here. As Pierre works very hard to exclude this from his wines, wanting the purity of the vineyard to be at the forefront. In the same vein, it has been vinified using 80% old French oak and 20% stainless steel. This results in a beautifully mineral wine with layered complexity. Yellow plum, flint, smoky/schisty, and ripe peach all play together with great acidity and minerality. Purity, structure, a lengthy finish, and utter deliciousness, Pierre's Clos des Mailles is an experience we all deserve this year. BRIAN2011Chenin BlancFrance422$72.00 As low as $64.80
Huet Vouvray Clos du Bourg Sec 2019The 2019 Sec Clos du Bourg is a wine of stature and vertical build. There is real gravitas to the orchard fruit, spice and earthy flavors. Tasted blind, Clos du Bourg might be confused with a red wine such is its feeling of volume and structure. Far from an easygoing Vouvray, Clos du Bourg is a very serious wine. I loved it. In a word: marvelous. In three words: don't miss it. ANTONIO GALLONI, vinous.com2018Chenin BlancFrance422Special Price $107.00 Regular Price $126.00
Huet Vouvray Le Mont Sec 2005
The Huet 2005 Vouvray Sec Le Mont leads with quince, tangerine zest, and orange blossom, comes to the palate with great delicacy, refinement and polished texture, and displays a refreshing, shimmering interchange of orchard and citrus fruit with saline, chalky, smoky, stony minerality in its long, billowing finish. Relish this beauty DAVID SCHILDKNECHT, Wine Advocate
This wine still has a very fresh and pale hue despite its age, and is clearly still very young. The nose seems in keeping with this, showing a very minerally trait, and it feels surprisingly quite reductive in character, with smoky nuances too, and so it doesn't really show the development I would have expected in a wine of this vintage. In keeping with this it has an incredibly fresh and vibrant palate, is quite pithy, with great depth. There are some pear-fruit notes, as well as a twist of tropical fruit, but much more of that smoky minerality to be honest. This is impressive stuff. Huet Vouvray Moelleux Le Haut-Lieu 2018The 2018 Moelleux Le Haut-Lieu is a gorgeous, exotic wine. Jasmine, lemon oil and ginger lead into a core of green orchard fruit as the 2018 shows off its considerable charms. A wine of absolutely exquisite beauty, the 2018 is precise and sculpted, with its sweetness very nicely integrated. Huet Vouvray Le Mont Sec 2019The 2019 Sec Le Mont is precise and beautifully cut. A wine of laser-like focus, Le Mont dazzles with its purity. Citrus peel and floral accents are nicely lifted, but it is the wine's energy that impresses most. Le Mont is a subtle wine that speaks softly, but what it has to say is priceless. Badenhorst Secateurs Chenin Blanc 2020
AA Badenhorst Family Wines are grown, made and matured on Kalmoesfontein farm in
the Swartland appellation of South Africa. The 28ha of old bushvines grow in the
Siebritskloof part of the Paardeberg mountain.
Cousins Hein and Adi Badenhorst are at the helm of this fantastic estate with a rich history in the region. Adi was a founding member of the Swartland Revolution and Swartland Independent and is a parrot farmer, LP collector, egg poaching pro, tea connoisseur, Land Cruiser driver, ponytail wearer and local legend (just ask him).
Classic styled Cape Chenin but with a wonderful modern outlook. Floral and honey-dew melon with a touch of citrus and steely notes. The mouth has the lightest touch of sweetness that is quckly drawn out by the bone-drying acidity which lend a wonderful poise and light touch to the wine. This comes of dry, don't worry but has a lovely plush element to the fruit. Great stuff and may have you falling in love with Chenin and South African wines on one-foul-swoop! Huet Vouvray Le Haut Lieu Sec 2005
The 2005 Vouvray Sec Le Haut Lieu smells positively mineral and carnal in its meld of ocean breeze, chicken stock, and snuffed candle wick, but neither does it stint on floral dimensions. With brothy richness, ample quince fruit, and pistachio nuttiness on the palate, the wine also displays positively gripping brightness of ripe acidity and tactile apple skin, grapefruit zest, and chalk dust, leading to a long, subtly nipping, tingling finish. DAVID SCHILDKNECHT, Wine Advocate
A very similar hue here, pale star-gold, still looking youthful. It has a very expressive nose, being full of the polished citrus and richer orchard fruit tones of youth, but also with a very harmonious integration giving it a slick, seamless, face-cream character. This has beautifully creamed fruit intensity, and yet it remains bright, fresh and acidic. The palate is finely composed, polished, with good substance and grip, and plentiful fruit at first. At the finish it begins to segue into a little honeyed, biscuity and exotic fruit, so there is ongoing development here. Chidaine Chenin 4 Pack 2019
Francois and Manuela Chidaine are masters of Chenin Blanc. Born in Montlouis-sur-Loire, Francois’ synergy with the local land shines through in his wines. While each cuvee is made from Chenin, their personalities are unique; from the salty-piquant and minerally tense to the ‘gently dry’ and power-laden Clos Habert. They dance effortlessly across the palate.
The diversity of Chenin Blanc is in play here too. Most of the wines are dry, with just a few off-dry’s in the mix. To make the wines, Chidaine passes through the vineyards over different days or weeks to get a mix of flavours while pushing the ripeness to avoid green and underripe tones. There’s a lovely sense of ripeness through the wines paired with minerality and a saline piquancy.

Huet Vouvray Le Mont Moelleux 2009
The golden-yellow 2009 Vouvray Le Mont Moelleux has a fascinating subtle and aromatic bouquet of perfectly ripe and gently stewed fruits intertwined with biscuit, confiture and caramel notes, as well as lemony flinty aromas. Smooth, round and very elegant, with great finesse and balance, this is a very piquant and salty moelleux with a persistent and aromatic, yet purely mineral and tension-filled finish. The 2009 is very stimulating also due to the delicate yet firm tannins. This is an age-worthy Chenin that is only slowly starting to unfold its charms. STEPHAN REINHARDT, The Wine Advocate
"Residual sugar 56.5 g/l, alcohol 12.6%, total acidity 5.14 g/l. A lovely nose here, deeper and more reserved than the Haut Lieu, although still fresh, youthful and floral. On the palate a very bright character, substantial and fleshy, with a wonderfully floral composition. A very fine effort at this level. Francois Chidaine Les Choisilles Montlouis 2019
Les Choisilles is named after a type of black flint of the same name, abundant in the old vine parcels that gift this wine where the bedrock is tuffeau. The vines range in age between 30 to 90 years. This is a wonderfully racy, mineral dry Chenin of intensity and drive.
Chidaine's 2019 Montlouis sur Loire Les Choisilles is deep, pure, fresh and refined on the nose but still very young, with lemon leaf, chalk and sur lie aromas. On the palate, this is a rich and concentrated Chenin, but it reveals remarkable freshness and energy. It is a bit unfair to compare it to the 2018, which has a year more of development, but I have to, and I am still amused by the 2019, which lifts Les Choisilles to unknown heights. The salinity and mineral grip are really beautiful here in the finish, and I believe the wine can age for two decades. Highly attractive pineapple flavors on the aftertaste. Huet Vouvray Clos du Bourg Moelleux 2009
Quince and white peach preserves fill the nose caressingly coat the palate from Huet's 2009 Vouvray Moelleux Clos du Bourg, which displays a combination of lift and delicacy with its honeyed richness that none of the present collection tasted up until this point approach. Here are brightness, energy, and efficacious acids driving the quince, pineapple, seamlessly forward. Here, too are mineral nuances too often missing from the sweet Vouvray and Montlouis of this vintage. Expect this superbly persistent bottling to be worth following for a quarter century. DAVID SCHILDKNECHT, Wine Advocate
Residual sugar 55.5 g/l, alcohol 12.5%, and the total acidity is 5.12 g/l. Very light and elegant style on the nose here, refined and reserved. A very seductive style on the palate though, supple and with a very polished yellow plum and stone fruit character. Lightly honeyed, very mellifluous but in a light, ethereal fashion rather than anything hedonistic. Very appealing and showing only its baby fat at the moment. There should be fine development here though as the balance and depth of structure and grip is delightful. CHRIS KISSACK, The Wine Doctor

Huet Petillant Brut 2015The 2015 Vouvray Pétillant Brut displays an intense yellow color and opens with a deep and rich bouquet of perfectly ripe and juicy yellow fruits intertwined with rich brioche and vanilla as well as chalky aromas. Much fruitier than any Champagne. Full-bodied and rich yet bone dry and fresh, this is nevertheless a pure and refreshing sparkling wine that should be served for lunch or dinner rather than as an aperitif. Baumard Coteaux de Layon Carte D'or 2015This wine, his Carte d'Or is a blend of sites which he thoughtfully keeps fresh by not burdening it with too much sugar (its sweetness is balanced with a zesty line of acidity). It's a delightful and lively rendition that will age well or give pleasure right now.
'The palate shows a very appealing concentration, with white peach, white pear flesh, a delightfully match-sticky freshness and also a beautifully bright acidity…this has very nice fruit and tension, but also a delicious minerally frame for it all. Very good indeed.' thewinedoctor.com

Huet Vouvray Clos du Bourg Moelleux 2018The 2018 Vouvray Clos du Bourg Moelleux is ripe and already quite open on the remarkably fine and precise nose where delicate chalky notes intermix with yeasty aromas of ripe apples and even very fine flinty hints. On the palate, this is a sweet, lush, salty-piquant and refined but tightly woven Chenin with structure, remarkable finesse, tickling salinity and serious but fine tannins, as if it was a Pinot Noir. Filigreed and feminine on the tongue, the 2018 develops a long, tensioned, tightly woven and stimulatingly salty finish. Great class and aging potential. Huet Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Moelleux 2020The 2020 Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Moelleux is clear, pure, fresh and concentrated on the lemon and pineapple-scented nose. You wouldn't guess this is sweet from the nose, as the bouquet is precise and fresh. Round and mellow but also refined and elegant on the palate, with a stimulating mineral freshness and lingering salinity and piquancy, this is a gorgeous, very delicate and perfectly balanced Vouvray to drink even young, but as experience tells me, this Chenin Blanc from the now 15-hectare Ur vineyard of Domaine Huet can also be aged for decades, even if the wine is not really dramatic in all its pristine beauty. Huet Vouvray Le Mont Sec 2020The only dry wine from the vintage is the 2020 Vouvray Le Mont Sec, whose tank sample shows a classy, pure, precise and chalky/lemony bouquet with bright and perfectly healthy fruit and some herbal as well as yeasty aromas. On the palate, this is a dense, fabulously juicy, fruity and elegant Chenin whose immediate attraction and pure finesse initially reminds me of Riesling, whereas the texture is too rich and the salty and finely tannic finish too intense and powerful for Riesling. With more aeration, the Le Mont gets more and more intense and complex but also, tannic-wise, more wild. The 2020 has great tension, energy and grip and is highly promising. Huet Vouvray Les Mont Moelleux 1er Trie 2020The intensely yellow colored 2020 Vouvray Le Mont Moelleux Première Trie is highly concentrated and complex on the nose that exhibits candied lemon zest and chutney aromas along with calcareous and walnut notes. Sweet (really sweet!) yet refined and elegant on the palate, this is a full-bodied, rich and generous yet piquant and firmly structured, greatly tensioned and salty 1ère Trie with pineapple flavors on the finely tannic and energetic, very sustainable finish. The 2020 has great aging potential, and I would never serve it too young. When will it really start to show its best? I don't know, but you can't go wrong to check the wine again after 10 years. Huet Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Moelleux 1er Trie 2020The citrus-colored sample of the 2020 Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Moelleux Première Trie still shows a very fine CO2 perlage in the glass that opens with clear and concentrated but also lush fruit and floral and chalky aromas, with lemon confit and fig mustard. Very elegant and even playful on the palate, with finely vivacious acidity, this full-bodied, silky and salty-piquant Haut-Lieu is beautiful in its terroir expression that favors a fruitier, fresher and more elegant style that is impossible not to like. Some of our readers might find it too vivacious and salty (while looking for hedonistic sweet wines), but as a critic, I am totally fine with this style. The aging potential should be great. Francois Chidaine Clos Baudoin Vouvray 2019
Since purchasing the Clos in 2001, Chidaine has elevated Clos Baudoin to one of the few 'Grand Cru' Vouvray vineyards. Sitting on the crest of a hill the Clos Baudoin vineyard is 2.7 hectares in size with an average vine age of over 70 years. The soils are clay and limestone, with a deep tuffeau subsoil.
Bright, intensely aromatic yet refined and with delicate yellow-fleshed fruit aromas on the limestone-grounded nose, this is a delicate, pure and fresh, highly tensioned but also lush and perfectly balanced and juicy Chenin Blanc with fine tannin grip, sustainable salinity and remarkable finesse. This is too young to be served today, but this is a highly promising Chenin with the concentration that a wine needs for long aging capacity. Francois Chidaine Clos Habert 2019This Domaine has a number of cuvées that often fall into what would traditionally be called demi-sec territory. However, Chidaine prefers to call these wines tendre, or 'gently dry'. This three-hectare clos sits just above the Clos de Breuil, on a plateau where the silex (flint) gives way to broken chalk and clay.
From a soil composed of clay and coarse flint elements covering the subsoil made up of tuff, the 2019 Montlouis sur Loire Clos Habert opens with a very fine and delicate bouquet of finely concentrated yellow-fleshed fruit aromas along with herbal and flinty notes. Round and intense, with perfectly ripe fruit, fine tannins and delicate acidity, this is a sustainably intense and salty Chenin that is far too young to be served today but will age for some decades. Francois Chidaine Clos Du Breuil Montlouis 2019
Chidaine's Clos du Breuil is a Montlouis treasure: a single, three-hectare site, sloping towards the Loire and home to some of Chidaine's oldest vines (up to 90 years old). Just across from Clos Habert, Clos de Breuil rests on one of the highest points in the appellation.
The bouquet is precise, crystalline and deep, pairing lemony, tropical fruit and chalky aromas with flint stone, iodine and red paprika or pimiento notes. The palate is seamless, crystalline, fresh, very elegant and salty-piquant, almost like a limestone Riesling, with ripe pear flavors, fine tannins and a long and dense, if not juicy finish. The acidity is remarkably fine, and the wine indicates great aging potential, even though it is already an excellent Chenin that could be served even as aperitif (despite its 14% alcohol). Francois Chidaine Vouvray Les Argiles 2017I regard this wine as the French equivalent of top notch Hunter Sem, it continuously overdelivers on the old quality V hip pocket damage. Orchard fruits, ocean air and herbal notes really get you going and the palate doesn't miss a beat either. Salty, snappy, textural and has real zing. You got to love Chidaine's ability to hit the mark with his whites year in and year out. ROSCOE
"This comes from Vouvray, an assemblage from a number of different parcels. It has 3.5 g/l residual sugar, with 3.71 g/l acidity and 13% alcohol. It has been in bottle for about 18 months now. Aromatically it starts off smoky and restrained, showing a chalky, liquid mineral note, wrapped around a core of finely dried citrus fruits. The palate shows the same style, with rich fruit intertwined with a saline minerality, plenty of rich substance, not to mention a delightful acid lift as well. This is a quite delicious Les Argiles" CHRIS KISSACK, www.winedoctor.com2017Chenin BlancFrance422$80.00 As low as $72.00
Philippe Foreau Clos Naudin Vouvray Moelleux 2017
Founded in 1923, Philippe Foreau's Domaine du Clos Naudin has remained a small and prized estate within Vouvray - it's less than 1/3 size of its friend and neighbour Domaine Huet. Today Vincent Foreau is in charge, taking over from his dad, the charismatic Phillip Foreau in 2016.
This is far from a globby sweet rendition, its nose is evocative and stunning. Wine critic Jason Wilson describes it as 'lots of ripe apple, even Calvados-like notes, autumnal, fallen leaves, cinnamon and mulled spices.' It's an intriguing mix of sweet spices, earth and fruit. And then on the palate a beautifully judged sweet core of ripe fruits is electrified by a scintillating bolt of acidity.
This cuvée, built on fruit concentrated by passerillage rather than botrytis, always registers a modest (for a moelleux cuvée) residual sugar, coming in at 60 g/l in this vintage. It feels mildly reticent, with some minerally citrus veins to the fore on the nose. This is countered by a charming and supple substance on the palate, filled with polished citrus fruits, white peach and peach stone, with a touch of quince. It feels so very elegant, tense and bright, with fabulous acidity. So long and correct in the finish. CHRIS KISSACK, winedoctor.com2017Chenin BlancFrance422$110.00 As low as $99.00
Thierry Germain Roches Neuves Clos Romans Blanc Saumur 2019The Chenin Blanc vines of Clos Romans are rooted in the walled enclave of a priory dating back to the 11th century. The soil consists of a 30cm layer of sandy clay over Senonian-era limestone bedrock called Pierres de Champigny, the same rock that was used to build Château Champigny. Planted atop a ridge in Parnay, just outside Saumur, the vine roots burrow down through the limestone, towards the famous troglodyte dwellings below. Germain acquired this historic site in 2007 and has been steadily replanting at a density of 12,000 vines per hectare. He practices massale selection, mixing plants to ensure he doesn't get a mono-dimensional profile of this terroir.
Undoubtedly the top cuvée at the domaine, arguably regardless of colour, this comes from a small clos planted close to the edge of the plateau, on Senonian limestone. The nose is expressive, pure and lightly salty and minerally, with smoky citrus and white peach fruits. The palate is no less harmonious than the nose, very composed, with a soft blanket of white peach and citrus fruits draped over a structure of pithy phenolic substance and fresh acidity. This is perfectly poised, showing great composition, total harmony, fresh, pure and precise. This has superb potential (and not for the first time). CHRIS KISSACK, The Wine Doctor

Pierre Bise Savennieres Roche Aux Moines 2016
The Domaine of Pierre-Bise is a Loire legend. Based in Anjou, they make wines of 'shatteringly singularity', both dry and sweet chenin blanc. We've managed to get our hands on a small parcel of one of their flagship dry whites, Roche aux Moines Savennieres. This chenin is simply breathtaking in its purity and freshness.
Claude Papin has been the figurehead of the estate, and in more recent years his sons Christophe and René Papin largely run the show. They're experimenting with new approaches including organic certification. Loire aficionado Chris Kissack sums it up nicely 'in recent years the style has become more honed, more pointed, with greater purity and brighter minerality, and the quality remains very high.'
Roche aux Moines is a revered site, one of the best in Anjou. It is one of the two crus of Savennieres (the other is La Coulee de Serrant made famous by Nicolas Joly). These two crus lie on the right side of the Loire. Roche aux Moines means 'rocks of the monks' alluding to the fact the vineyard this rocky vineyard was planted by Cistercian monks in the 12th century. Its rocky outcrop on volcanic schist soils imbues a savoury salinity and fine chewy texture in the wines.
The Chenin from Roche Aux Moines have so much charm, as this bottling attests to. The nose is warm and cozy, full of honeysuckle, dried herb, and wool. The palate is beautiful, with an elegant, silky, balance of apricot, smoke, salt and a touch of honey. So open and friendly, and an excellent introduction to Roche Aux Moines. Aged mainly in foudre.
