Rising Yarra Valley Gamay 2020
Tom Belford makes the wines and this is part of the Sticks Crew out of the Yarra. That sort of combo means you are guaranteed quality, gluggablity and great value.
A notable patch of Yarra Valley gamay here.
Pretty, floral and red cherry/raspberry scented and flavoured red. Crisp, crunchy texture, bright, light, sour-edged fruit character, slightly nettle-y, leafy thing through the wine too. Blood orange flavours and acidity finish the wine. Neat and tidy, vibrant feeling lighter red, right on the edge of ripeness. MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Front2017GamayAustralia506$35.00 As low as $31.50
Taste of Tassie 2021 Super Six Pack
Tasmania has become such a hot-bed of awesome talent and great wine. As one of Australia's coolest wine growing regions pinot noir and chardonnay have excelled and sparkling wine still proves to be one of its crown jewels. These have been mainstays of the Apple Isle for some time and there looks this to be no stopping the tide of incredible examples of each making their way across the Tasman.
Fast-forward a generation and we are really starting to see what the verdant land can really turn out. In our mind some of the best Euro-styled rieslings are being produced there while the marginal climates and savvy wine-making are turning out some stellar textural pinot gris.
While pinot noir may reign supreme it is other reds like shiraz, that may, in time, prove to be something even more special. Time will tell and while it does we will happily sip our way through all that Tasmania's has to offer.$209.00 Regular Price $248.00
Jean-Marc Burgaud Villages Les Vignes de Lantignie 2019
The vines in this monopole are 55 years old, planted in sandy topsoil over granite at a density of 10,000 per hectare. Whole-berry, semi-carbonic maceration for seven days, then aged in concrete for six months. Burgaud says: "The 12th century Chateau de Thulon, my great aunt’s property, is in one of the best villages due to its hillsides and granite soil. It produces a bright red wine with a fresh and fruity nose. Best drunk within two years of release.
This wine was named in Wine Advocate's top 100 discoveries of 2020.
Offering up pretty aromas of blackberries, peonies and subtle forest floor, the 2019 Beaujolais-Villages Les Vignes de Lantignié is medium to full-bodied, velvety and enveloping, with lively acids, velvety tannins and a long, mouthwatering finish. As usual, this saw a short six- or seven-day maceration with whole clusters, followed by élevage in cement tank. Once again, Burgaud has produced a characterful and viscerally drinkable Beaujolais-Villages that exemplifies all the merits – as well as the incredible value – offered by the appellation at its best. Caves de Pouilly Les Tuileries Coteaux du Giennois Sur Loire Rouge 2018The Caves de Poulliy wines are sourced from the relatively new appellation of Cotteaux de Giennois which sits in the upper Loire just north of Sancerre. It shares the same kimeridgian clay and limestone soils commone to the region which give the wines their distinctive, minerally twang.
These are such cracking wines that are terroir driven and unique as well as being stupidly drinkable. Ther is a white that is baby Sancerre and this red which is blend of mainly pinot noir with a touch of gamay. It's all about the pure red fruits and crunchy earthy spice which jumps out at you. It's bright and brambly and you can smell the clay soils. Airy and easy but with a spike of fresh tannin that cuts the juicy fruit. All-in-all pretty easy to get through a bottle of this with a friend so you better buy two! PWS

Chateau Cambon Beaujolais 2019Chateau Cambon is the creation of a cult-Beaujolais triad; the late Marcel Lapierre, Jean Claude Chanudet and Joseph Chamonard. Like-minded in their pursuit of purity, this 2019 Beaujolais is fleshy and joyful - uncomplicated happiness in a glass.
Today the estate is run by Marie Lapierre, Marcel's wife with help from her son Matthieu. They've rejuvenated old vines, some over 100 years old from forgotten vineyards between the crus of Morgon and Brouilly. Chemicals are avoided in the vineyard. Biodynamic practices are employed and thoughtful winemaking in the cellar. Toil in the vineyard is preferred to work in the winery to prime the purity of the gamay fruit.
Josh Raynolds noted its predecessor, the 2018 '…conveys a suave blend of richness and energy finishing impressively long and juicy, displaying finely interwoven tannins and resonating florality.' And NYT wine critic Eric Asimov is a fan too, he described the 15' as 'bright, earthy, lip-smacking, slightly rustic straight Beaujolais from Château Cambon, the kind of wine that you simply don't want to stop drinking.'
Alluring notes of red and blue fruits, sweet spices and fresh earth tempt from the get go. A fleshy and joyful core is enlivened by an energetic line of acidity. There's a beautiful play on fruit, spice and earth with mineral flecks dotted throughout. Silky tannins sign off the wine, urging you to take another sip. A delightful uncomplicated wine that is pure happiness in a glass. GABRIELLE POY, PWS2019GamayFrance352$43.00 As low as $38.70
August Mixed Dozen 2021 - Going for Gold
With the eye of the world turned to Tokyo for the Olympic Games we are looking forward to watching old rivalries of sport battle it out in the arena. While the traditional powerhouses tend dominate the top spots, Australia always holds its own performing admirably. And so it is in the world of wine. With Italy, Spain and France vying to reign supreme, Australia has burst on to the scene over the last 25 years with its no-nonsense, easy going wines challenging the market and taking on the powers that be.
So, with that in mind not only is this months dozen a great pack of awesome drinking wine, you get to decide who did it best! That's right. This pack has 6 wines from Australia and 6 from France, Spain and Italy. We have picked classic varietals from each country and matched them with their Australian counterparts.
Australia's wine industry has been built on classic French varietals and we have taken those and made them our own putting our own stamp on them while always striving to push the boundaries of style and quality. We have also eagerly and happily adopted a number of varietals from Spain and Italy and made them our own. The likes of tempranillo and sangiovese have thrived in their adopted home and with a changing climate they have slotted beautifully and easily in to the Aussie wine vernacular. Other varietals like Nero d'Avola are growing in popularity while the likes of gamay see planting increase every year.
So whatever or wherever you like to drink from, this is going to be a little bit of research we think you will be happy to do.
To start we are going to look at Chardonnay and what a treat this will be. It's a head-to-head between Burgundy and Victoria with a brand new wine from Nicola Potel versus one of our favourite chardonnay's by Matt Harrop (Curly Flat). Both are generous and soft with lovely crunch and pure fruits offering incredible value.
Gamay is growing in popularity here in Australis with plenty new plantings gong into the ground. We have two crackers with the Aviron Villages sourced from some of Beaujolais most famous towns versus one of favourite Aussie version from Rising in the Yarra Valley. The rising is pure and fresh while the Avrion offers up a little more savoury cut. These are both made by young-guns in their respective homes so will be a worthy challenge!
Back to the classic varietal blend of grenache, shiraz and mouvedre and two recent releases in the market. The Pierre Amadieu makes fantastic wine from both the Rhones north and south with his Roulepierre offering up some of the easiest drinking you will find around. Dandelion vineyards out of the Barossa seems to do no wrong these days. Their latest release is soft, plush and forward with plenty of spice and juicy kick.
No doubt Tempranillo is here to stay. The Jericho team are producing some of the coolest and most delicious wine out of the Mclaren Vale and Adelaide Hills. They are modern and pure wines, wonderfully made. From Spain we have a real treat with a project headed up by Scott Wasley sourcing fruit from Bodegas la Eralta, based in the south-eastern village of Agoncillo. This is a special wine with Scott at the head. It represents the best of the old and the new from Spain and is delicious to boot!
Another varietal we have adopted happily and made our own. This can run the gambit from easy and light to serious and rich both here in Aus as well as its home in Italy. For this months pack we have to fresh, bright and crunchy versions that are the perfect pizza/pasta wines. Mel Chester at Sutton Grange has nailed this latest version and we are not surprised, the lady is terrific winemaker. The Fontaleoni hits all the right notes too and is airy and bright Chianti from the higher hills of Tuscany.
Nero seems to be a variety that we have latched onto and you can see why. It always offer lovely dark polished fruit, sweet spice and a subtle earthiness that is quintessentially Italian. The Ricca Terra is a great example of the varietal that brings all the fruit to the fore without being overly simple or juby while the Vinuva comes along with a little extra earthy richness and sunkissed fruit from it's warm home in southern Italy.$255.00 Regular Price $325.00
November Mixed Dozen 2021 - Mighty HalvesIt's back again! That's right, the Mighty, Mighty Half bottle dozen is here. Getting a steady selection of half bottles has been quite the challenge lately but we have put together a fantastic pack full of awesome drinking. What these lack in stature they make up for in punch.
These are wines from the worlds greatest producer and winemakers from Tuscany and Piedmonte, Mornington and Adelaide hills through to Chablis, Alsace and New Zealand. They are perfect for the park and even better with friends so take a look below at this brilliant, little, selection.

Chateau Thivin 'L'Heronde' Cote de Brouilly 2018A single site located mid-slope on Mount Brouilly with a southern exposure. The best grapes from this site go into this bottling, with the remainder used in the Sept Vignes. Rich, fleshy and succulent wine with a heap of exotic spice, blueberry and blackberry pie, and violet perfume. It’s ripe and juicy, almost sweet, but has ripe silty tannin and and a stony feel to go with that, and fine acidity through its core. Finish is full of fruit, pastry crust, and a whole lot more of that spice. Kind of exuberant now, but should come up very nicely with some bottle age. (94) GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

Lifted and heady scents of spiced black and red cherries, violets and fresh earth. This is playful and evocative on the nose and fleshy on the palate. December Premium Six Pack 2021 - Christmas Magnum PackBigger is always better! Especially when it comes to bottles of wine. This is now well and truly a PWS Christmas tradition and one we have happily embraced. After all, what better way to celebrate the silly season or dull the pain of another battle-run through the local toy-store then with a magnum of something absolutely delicious.
We can't think of anything better than sitting around the table with friends and family knocking the top of one these bad boys. While this year was a little tougher than most with the selection of magnums thin on the ground we have managed to put together another cracking little range of big boys for you.
Please note, we only have 12 packs available this year, so better get in quick!
To start one of the great grower Champagnes with Pierre Peters. This 100% Chardonnay is a stunning and pure example of the style with Rudolph's unique solera system of aging providing an extraordinary and subtle complexity that few Champagnes provide.
This is not the first time the Heretieres Comte Lafon Milly Larmartine has made it into the pack and it always represents some of the best value magnums around town. Rich but mineral driven with a wonderful lightness at its heart but with plenty of petrol in the tank. What else would you expect from one of the premiere white Burgundy producers in France.
What pack for summer would be complete without a rose? The Riotor is a year-in, year-out favourite here and the 2018 is another awesome bottling. Plenty of peachy and pear fruit overlayed with orange peel freshness and a minerally twang. Delicious stuff and we think you will be back for more.
The Bernard Metrat Beaujolais is sourced from 60-90 year old vines in some of the regions best pink-granite and clay soil vineyards. It has perfume and spice with dark minerally element running through the pure red and black fruits. Top-notch stuff.
This is 50/50 grenache and syrah and full of up-front juicy fruit and earthy spice. This is the type of wine you crack and wonder if your glass has a hole in it that is draining out the wine faster then you could be drinking. Well, no. It's just that good and that easy to drink. Perfect for a group of friends and a BBQ.
To book end this brilliant pack we are finishing with one of Australia great shiraz and grenache producers Yangarra. This is a blend of several of the estate blocks and see's just a kiss of new oak. Its vibrant and fresh but with lovely liqueured black and red fruits and peppercorn spice.

Roche de Bellene Bellenos Rouge 2018The Bellenos Cuvée Rouge is primarily from the Beaujolais area in the south of Burgundy, where fruity, mineral-inflected Gamay Noir is grown on granite soils. It is blended with finely structured Pinot Noir from the Côte d’Or in northern Burgundy. The result is a fresh, fruit-forward “Vin de Plaisir” — a deliciously expressive wine for everyday enjoyment.

Jane Eyre Fleurie 2018
Plump and primary, the fruit for Jane's 2018 Fleurie really captures the strength of the vintage with its upfront charm and silken texture. Like so many of the best 18s the lushness can hide the seriousness of the structure that Beaujolais rendered that year, the phenolics are sweet and saturated by the creamy, seductive fruit but they are there and supporting everything, keeping it all in check. The overall impression is of a wine that fills the mouth, providing an immediate rush of pleasure but that will only get better over a handful of years. Bloody lovely! They are geared towards quality production and organic farming base in the Loire Valley and working with about 24 hectares of land and 8 varietals. These are fun and delicious wines that don't take themselves to seriously but still over-deliver in spades.
A lifted fruit punch of red fruits - think strawberry, raspberry, sour cherry and red currant that leap out of the glass. A wild spicy note carries the bold fruit turning round into lovely savoury peppery sprinkles. There is a light lick of tannin that keeps this all-in check. Yum!

Bernard Metrat Fleurie 'La Roilette' Beaujolais 2019 1500mlFrom vines planted 1924 and 1936. La Roilette is regarded as one of the best sites in Fleurie, and this old vines cuvee (60-90+ years old vines) is produced from a patch of vines planted in pink granite-clay soil located beside the winery in the northern part of the appellation beside Moulin-a-Vent. 15% of this cuvee is vinified in barrel (none new) giving extra dimension to its freshness and perfume, will also age for 10+ years. This is Gamay at it's finest and beautifully perfumed best. PWS
La Roilette cru sits on very deep black granite. Historically, La Roilette used to be part of Moulin-à-Vent, which borders it to the east. In 1920, when Fleurie was demarcated, La Roilette ended up in Fleurie. This wine comes from vines planted in the 1920s and 1930s, and it has amazing density and precision.
