Made by an icon within the Australian wine industry Matt Harrop. Matt had stints at Grosset and Brokenwood before creating Shadowfax in 1999. Now making wine at Curly Flat and Silent Way, Matt has gained a reputation for making stunning cool climate wines with structure, concentration and complexity.
This Pinot Noir was made exclusively for the Prince Wine Store with fruit sourced from the Macedon Ranges. The youthful wine presents a vibrant nose of fresh cut strawberries with a herbaceous edge. Bright red fruit follows on the palate, with fresh crunchy acidity and subtle spiced characteristic. Beautifully accompanied with roast rabbit or enjoyed on its own. PWS

A collaboration between Matt Harrop and his brother Steve. Steve is a musician and record producer- he bought his vintage analogue Soundcraft 2400 desk from U2 in Dublin. He also grows his own Pinot Noir in the Waitaki Valley under the Sublime Label.

Since 2016 the Amen break Pinot Noir has been grown at the extraordinary Zebra Vineyard in Bendigo. Soil here is very weak, loessial and alluvial river terraces.

The ambition with the Amen Break Pinot has been to produce wines with lifted aromatic, textured mid palates and refined, lithe tannins. Hand harvested and naturally fermented. A mixture of clones that are both destemmed whole bunch pressed with no new wood.

Lovely lifted red fruits, some pomegranate seed, lovely textured mid palate and long fine extract at the end. Evenly ripened, beautifully poised wine. Noticably absent is the heaviness of extract or overburden of wood. Pure, delicious Pinot for drinking now or into the future. PWS

Matt Harrop has been making pinot from this Kilmore site since 2013. Before that Giant Steps used to take the grapes. The vineyard is on an old bluestone quarry and it’s cold here – Kilmore sits just outside the Macedon GI. Harrop attributes the soils and cooler climate to building structure in the wine. I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s the iron fist in the velvet glove, but there is an elegance to its delivery wrapped in a firm and fine tannin. It unleashes structure and flesh, complemented by a central Victorian spice that reminds you where it comes from. This pinot that doesn’t shy away from framework – though the tannins are fine in keeping with its pinot nature. Exceptional for the price! GABRIELLE POY

Gorgeously fruited and splendidly styled, showing sweet plum, thyme, roasted nut and warm mushroom aromas, the wine exhibits awesome concentration and richness, while remaining elegant and refined. From the Northburn Station vineyard on a lakeside terrace, this sees no whole-bunch or new oak. Only 20 barrels were made.

This is a fragrant and lithely composed pinot with an underlying power that drives the wine. Its sinewy structure is laden with maraschino cherries, plums are rosemary tones. While it feels light and fluid on the palate, it doesn't forsake flavour. Its perceived fragility is beguiling. Fine and sleek tannins sign off the wine.  An eloquent expression of Central Otago pinot. GABRIELLE POY, PWS

Distinctive, powerful, ripe, pure and intriguing. Punnets of raspberries and black current, wild thyme and rocky countryside scents. Baking spices of oak and toasty wood, then dark velvet roses. Tense and dry, taut and fruity, very young and tight in texture. Fruit flavours mirror the nose, tannins are firm and chalky, acidity in abundance. A fantastic wine but needs to be cellared to develop more complexity and fuse the attributes together. Best drinking 2024 through 2034+ (96) CAMERON DOUGLAS MW
