Bests Bin 1 Shiraz 2018
It wasn't an easy choice this year, it never is. While we tasted a lot of great stuff, and there were a few contenders, this gem takes home the chocolates for a number of reasons, first a foremost among them is that is it great.
This release of Bin 1 delivers a package of sumptuously juicy and immediately impressive fruit that can be drunk right out of the gate, as shown by the number of bottles I have consumed already. It also has a degree of class and sophistication with the inherent stuffing and filigreed tannins to carry it in the cellar for a period as it develops and grows in stature and gains detail. It is a wine that offers an expression of Shiraz that is completely unique to its region. A gorgeous example.
The reason why it got the gong for my wine of the year though, you get all of this for very little hip pocket damage. A touch over $20, it is crazy value. In 2020 who doesn't need great wine that is also great value? That's why this is the Best (terrible pun intended) wine I have had this year. ROSCOE2018shirazAustralia402$27.00 As low as $24.30
Reed Alexia Grenache 2019
100% Vine Vale fruit from old bush vines on light sandy soils.
An elegantly framed grenache that reveals depth and flavour from the get go. Notes of rosehip, cranberries, raspberries and fresh leather wrap around a fine slender tannin flow. GABRIELLE POY, PWS
This wine has a fragility and purity that dances across the palate. Slightly tart red fruits with flickers of perfume almost popping in the mouth as you sip this wine. The tannins are mouth coating and waxy, making it "deceptively smashable" in nature but not lacking in fine layers of complexity. Its juvenile framework makes it so delicious in its infancy. Yet over time that pretty young girl will become the promise of an amazing 100 + year old vineyard and become the elegant woman of a wine that it is. Bests Bin O Shiraz 2016
Quite lush and ripe fruited, shows sweet, rich berry fruit characters, suggestions of milk chocolate, pretty violet and ‘floral’ notes and comes with a sheen of sweet, nougat oak. There’s depth to the medium-to-full weight shiraz characters, a plushness and pillowy texture with smooth tannins and a puff of warmth through the finish. The generosity of the wine will appeal to many, and it holds its bolder feel well. A younger drinking Bin 0 too. MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Front2016shirazAustralia402$94.00 As low as $84.60
