Larmandier Bernier and Chateau de la Tour dinner Wednesday June 2 – 6:30pm

The Larmandier-Bernier Champagnes are some of the purest and most utterly engaging wines being made in the region today. I can’t recommend them highly enough. ANTONIO GALLONI, The Wine Advocate

Few growers’ ranges in Champagne are as consistently outstanding as that of Larmandier-Bernier. ANDREW JEFFORD, The New France

Pierre and Sophie Larmandier excel with statuesque, vinous Champagnes built on breadth, texture and an expression of place. Old vines, maniacal attention to farming, vinification in oak, and low dosage yields Champagnes of tremendous textural depth. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous

This Domaine possesses by far the most important parcel of the grand cru Clos de Vougeot and has the privilege of being the sole producer that has its winery within the Clos itself. The quality of the grapes in the Vieilles Vignes is exceptional and their vinification in whole bunches, not destemmed, gives a wine of prodigious breeding, worthy of comparison with the greatest Richebourg. The standard cuvee, excellent also, is produced from the much younger vines. MICHEL BETTANE & THIERRY DESSEAUVE, LE GRAND GUIDE DES VINS DE FRANCE

Vine age and vineyard placement separates Chateau de la Tour from its peers. The holdings of Chateau de la Tour cover 5.48 hectares in all, including one plot of approximately a hectare of ancient vines planted in 1910. Part of this is used for a limited edition vielles vignes cuvee, typically amounting to eight barrels worth (2,400) bottles. Organically farmed since 1992 (one of the first), winemaker Francios Labet controls yields by rubbing out every second bud, producing a well-spaced out canopy. Grapes are sorted and placed in vats with 100% whole bunches, cooled to 7°C and left to begin ferment on their own at a 28°C. The juice is removed immediately after fermentation and aged in 50% new wood. These are wines of power – age worthy and arguably the definitive expression of Vougeout. JASPER MORRIS MW

Wow, this is a dinner! I have to say that though, I have been pushing to get this dinner up and running for some time now. The dinner is an exploration of two of the wine world’s greatest domaines matched with, the always impressive, food from Chef Nicky Reimer of Bellota who is creating a personalised menu to match each bracket.

Larmandier Bernier are one of the Grower Movement’s most consistently remarkable producers. The epitome of what makes Grower Champagne so exciting. The wines are vinous expressions that carry a definitive imprint of their place and present with extraordinary depth and character. Few houses can match their track record of excellence.

The Chateau de la Tour is one of Burguny’s most important domaines and certainly the reference point by which all other Clos de Vougeot are measured.

While the Clos itself may be a mixed bag in terms of quality and in terms of the terroir the behemoth 125 acre climat holds within its walls the Chateau and their ancient vines are ideally situated and the wines are precisely what one should expect from Great Vougeot. Density, power, muscle and depth are all deftly woven in to wines that, with time, can provide remarkable pleasure and offer consumers a real glance in to what some patches of this vineyard are capable of producing.

Tasting young Chateau de la Tour does not really demonstrate the potential that is often buried deep in these often brooding wines and time is required to coax out their nuances and also to allow their muscularity to soften a little. We are hoping that mini verticals extending back to the 2013 vintage will give those lucky enough to attend some insight in to the wines of this storied estate and the essence of the Clos de Vougeot.

Dinner kicks off at 6:30pm in the POD at Prince Wine Store with canapes and Larmandier Bernier Latitude before easing in to the main event, a bracket of three other Larmandier and two brackets of the Vougeot including their iconic Vielles Vignes.

For $375 a head I think this is one of the greatest value dinners that we have put on in some time as the wines are being heavily subsidised by the importer, who I also thinks wants to drink the wines.

Places are limited to ten people only so please get in early to avoid missing out.
