  3. Chateau Coupe Roses Fremillant Rose 2020
Chateau Coupe Roses Fremillant Rose 2020

Situated in La Caunette, a small and beautiful village in Minervois, just close to the Montagne Noire the family of Françoise Le Calvez, his parents, son and daughter have created something incredibly special from this little corner they have carved out in the Mediterranean hinterlands.

Today the vineyard holdings total 143 acres with an assortment of some 40 plots in total, mostly on the mountain plateau standing high above their village of La Caunette. At 750 – 1350 ft above sea level these are some of the highest sites in the AOC. The warm days and cool nights result in one the longest growing seasons in the region. Regardless the wine remain wonderfully fresh and vibrant.

A wonderful Provence style rose but with a little extra meat on it bones. The high mourvedre count gives this a beautiful earthy spice element that lingers gently over red and black currant fruit, orange peel and pithy citrus fruit. Still in the medium bodied category this has a little extra heft and comes of feeling firm and full as well as bright and fresh. Juicy fruits and a spicy finish bring it all together nicely.

  4. Chalk Hill Europa Shiraz 2020
    Chalk Hill Europa Shiraz 2020
Chalk Hill is a family owned wine company dedicated to making small batch, hand crafted wines of distinction. The Harvey family grape growing heritage goes back six generations in South Australia, and they now have six vineyards (two of which are Certified Organic and the rest sustainably managed) spread across the beautiful McLaren Vale wine region. The home vineyard was first planted in 1897 and these century old vines still bear fruit today. It is the family commitment to make wines that reveal the unique place that is McLaren Vale, and to showcase the efforts from the vineyard to the bottle.

Each of the seven parcels are treated separately and this sees a combo of steel tank and older oak so remains beautifully fresh, lifted and pure. A perfumed nose with red and dark berry fruits combining with milk chocolate, spice and roasted nuts. Medium to full bodied, this wine is beautifully balanced with layers of red and blue fruits up front. The finish is plush and slippery with beautiful fruit buttressed by fine tannins.

  5. De Bortoli Tumbarumba Chardonnay 2019
    De Bortoli Tumbarumba Chardonnay 2019

De Bortoli offers some of the most interesting and best value drinking in the country at the moment. Their commitment to quality at all levels is really incredible and the fact that they manage to do this over such a large range and with such a diverse suite of wine style and varietals is unbelieveable. PWS

From the Minutello Vineyard planted '81. The sheer quality of the fruit - and its clearly articulated varietal character - leaves no room for argument: this is priced well below its value. The flavours are ripe even though framed by pink grapefruit, green apple and white peach. Oak? Don't know/don't care. JAMES HALLIDAY

  6. Gunderloch Fritz Riesling 2020
    Gunderloch Fritz Riesling 2020

How do they do it? This has been a PWS favourite for some time now and it never fails to deliver. Made by Rheinhessen legends Gunderloch with vineyards  close to the Rhines south-east steep slopes. The combination of the red slate soil, the proximity to the river, the exposure to the sun and the steepness of the vineyards - are perfect for producing wonderful ripeness. If you are a German riesling fan it would be hard to beat this for the sheer quality and insane value it represents.

The wine shows lovely stone fruit, peach and pithy characters as it opens in the glass. There is a salty mineral hit to that is really lovely. The fresh natural acidity zip through the ripe and spice flecked palate while a little aromatic lift gives this some real interest. Dry, fresh and full of character. PWS

  7. Des Grande Esperances Java Rouge 2019
Des Grande Esperances Java Rouge 2019
This is a cracking Blend of gamay 60% malbec 20% and cabernet Franc 20% made by the team at Domaines de Grande Esperances. They are geared towards quality production and organic farming base in the Loire Valley and working with about 24 hectares of land and 8 varietals. These are fun and delicious wines that don't take themselves to seriously but still over-deliver in spades.

A lifted fruit punch of red fruits - think strawberry, raspberry, sour cherry and red currant that leap out of the glass. A wild spicy note carries the bold fruit turning round into lovely savoury peppery sprinkles. There is a light lick of tannin that keeps this all-in check. Yum!

  8. Rive Droite Rive Gauche Cotes du Rhone 2020
Rive Droite Rive Gauche Cotes du Rhone 2020
Rive Droite Rive Gauche simply means right bank, left bank and the name derives from fruit for the wine being sourced from both sides of the river - the grenache coming mainly from the left (gauche) and the Syrah from the village of Daumazan (on the rive droite), near Tavel. It is also a French film starring the rotund wine-nut actor Gerard Depardieu - fun fact!

This is a lovely fresh and crunchy styled Rhone from our friends at Rive Droite. There is touch of thyme and bay over red spiced fruits, layered with a little bit of red liquorice. This is a medium bodied rendition with a pure core of raspberry, wild strawberry and splash of black berry fruit in the mix. Its lithe with a lovely fresh cut to the sweet fruits that makes this look wonderfully elegant and damn easy to like.

  9. Racine Picpoul de Pinet 2019
    Racine Picpoul de Pinet 2019
Picpoul from the coastal reaches of the Mediterranean has become in recent years the 'go to wine' in France for Oysters, shell fish and indeed all fish and with good reason as besides having that dry bite and the acidity that goes with it, it also has good body and underlying fruit flavours. I love it - and particularly as it is made by my good fried Francois Chamboissier who is both a talented winemaker and a great gourmet living in a stunning small village in southern France. What a life! The wine is a treat. Racy freshness, ripe citrus fruit, and seafood-friendly purity. The palate has a lovely texture, with many layers of flavour and a notable length to the finish.

"The 2019 Racine Picpoul de Pinet is spot on. Crisp, clean and lively, it makes the perfect springtime aperitif and, blessed with a screwcap, can be opened in a trice whenever thirst strikes. JONATHAN RAY, The Spectator Magazine

  10. Antonio Soave 2020
    Antonio Soave 2020
Set in the foothills before the Dolomites - with most sites sitting between 250-500 metres, the wines of Antonio Fattori are a masterclass of focus and definition. His gift is to let the varieties - Garganega for Soave, Pinot Grigio and more recently Durello and the Valpolicella red grapes which speak brightly of their origins.

These wines are fantastic and this must be one of the best value Soave's around. Lovely up-front peach and soft green almond tinged fruit greet you. There is a lovely zip to the palate and some nervy energy countered by pure and plush fruits. This is modern, stylish and very tasty.

  11. Handorf Hill Rose 2021
    Handorf Hill Rose 2021

36/23/21/20% pinot noir/tempranillo/merlot/trollinger. Hand-picked fruit, gently crushed. Free-run juice fermented in stainless steel with cultured yeasts. Delicate is the middle name of this breezy, summery rosé with its dusty strawberry scent, honeydew melon and mandarin skin aromas. Walks a fine, straight line of soft, juicy acidity across the palate. JENI PORT, The Wine Companion

  12. Fontaleoni Vernaccia di San Gimignano 2019
Fontaleoni Vernaccia di San Gimignano 2019
The 2019 Vernaccia di S. Gimignano is an absolutely delicious, every day white. Apricot, tangerine oil, mint, chamomile and yellow flowers all grace this tasty, supple Vernaccia from Fontaleoni. ANTONIO GALLONI

Bright and somewhat crunchy with a direct line of fresh apple like acidity. Plenty to enjoy here with all the usual elements you would want from Vernaccia of this quality, apple fruit, lemon oil and white flowers along with just enough texture to provide a little tactile interest. Clean and clear cut and something I will be drinking a lot of as the weather starts to warm up again. ROSCOE

  13. Prince Estivac Blanc de Blanc NV
Prince Estivac Blanc de Blanc NV
While there is no doubt Alsace is well known for its aromatic white varietals it is probably not as well known as the steward of great sparkling. Well, this little drop will change your mind. This doesn't try to be Champagne and it's all the better for it. The aim is to produce a clean, fun and delicious sparkling that nods to its home in Alsace but overdelivers in quality, and it has that in spades!

This is sensational value, made from Pinot Blanc and Riesling in a traditional method. Nashi pear and green apple with hints of lime. Cumquat, apple, zesty citrus lead in the mouth to a long finish. Excellent little wine and you would be just as happy popping this for a toast as you would cracking it at a BBQ to get the party started.

  14. Nocturne SR Rose 2021
    Nocturne SR Rose 2021

Of all things, today I’m listening to the soundtrack to “Pretty in Pink”, which is not quite yacht rock, but it’ll do for the morning session. Here we have 74% Sangiovese, 17% barrel-fermented Nebbiolo and 9% Tempranillo.

Spicy, peppery, dried herb and floral perfume, white cherry and pink grapefruit. It’s dry with a grainy and chalky grip, subtle but engaging flavour profile, a coolness to acidity, and a dusty finish of crunch and excellent length, a little amaro tang in the aftertaste. Texture is a highlight in this high cheekboned style of rosato. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

  15. Chaffey Bros La Conquista Tempranillo Grenache Graciano 2017
Chaffey Bros La Conquista Tempranillo Grenache Graciano 2017

The Chaffey boys don't own any fruit and this thoroughly works to their advantage. Being able to source the best old vine material and best plots gives them an edge over mother nature while allowing access to some awesome fruit. This is usually a blend of 65% Barossa tempranillo, 25% old vine Barossa grenache, and 10% graciano from Eden Valley.

Lifted and bright this about pure drinking pleasure. A bit of licorice and spice with punchy fruit and pepper to the fore. Mid-weight in style with everything in its place. Perfect Wed night wine. PWS

Barossa blend of tempranillo, garnacha and graciano.

Great drink. Up-front with blue- and black-berry fruit flavour with lacings of peppercorn and coal. It feels gentle and refreshing and yet it’s hearty in volume terms. Bright with flavour. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine front

  16. Knight's Granite Hills 1971 Block Riesling 2018
    Knight's Granite Hills 1971 Block Riesling 2018

Granite Hills is one of the enduring classics, having pioneered the successful growing of riesling and shiraz in an uncompromisingly cool climate. The vineyard includes riesling, chardonnay, shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot and pinot noir (the last also used in its sparkling wine). The Rieslings age superbly, and the Shiraz was the forerunner of the cool-climate school in Australia. JAMES HALLIDAY

From the original riesling vines planted in '71. Delicate lemony scents lead to a textural, well weighted riesling with an above-average sense of presence. Its quality is built on mouthfeel, weight of fruit and flow. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, James Halliday
