    At the ripe old age of 28, Nick O'Leary had been involved in the wine industry for over a decade, working variously in retail, wholesale, viticulture and winemaking. Two years earlier he had laid the foundation for Nick O'Leary Wines, purchasing shiraz from local vignerons (commencing in 2006); riesling following in '08.
    His wines have had extraordinarily consistent success in local wine shows and competitions since the first vintages, and are building on that early success in spectacular fashion. At the NSW Wine Awards '15, the 2014 Shiraz was awarded the NSW Wine of the Year Trophy exactly as the 2013 Shiraz was in the prior year - the first time any winery had won the award in consecutive years.     (Cabernet sauvignon, merlot, malbec, petit verdot) Deep, youthfully bright purple/red colour, with a lovely cassis, mulberry and blueberry aroma, the palate rich, essency and fruit-sweet, with stacks of glorious berry cabernet flavour.     We are always a little shocked when we see the price for the Amy's vineyard's bottling. It represents such terrific value from one of Australia's great wine estates. It gives the top bottlings a run for their money given it comes in at much less then half the price-tag of it's bigger brothers. PWS

    5/13/7/5% cabernet sauvignon/merlot/malbec/petit verdot. Hand picked, matured for 14 months in seasoned French oak. The 2019 vintage in Margaret River was cool and wet, producing wines of concentrated, high aroma and vibrancy. This is all of that, with layers of nuance on the palate. It is very restrained and long; unfurling, petal by petal, rather than revealing itself all at once. Elegant and classy to the very end. A ripper.     Yalumaba is a force to be reckoned with and a recent chat with the team there left us pretty excited about what is going on. This was one of the highlights of that tasting, and we were throuroughly impressed. The base wine is over 40 years old, the finished wine has an average age of 15 years. Deep sienna brown colour, with distinct green olive edges, showing its great age. Made from shiraz, grenache and other Portuguese varietals.

    The medium amber-hued non-vintage Museum Reserve Antique Tawny, which has had more than 15 years of oak aging, is a sensational fortified that could easily be confused with a high quality, 20- to 25-year-old Tawny Port. Delicious notes of prunes, sweet raisins, over-ripe strawberries, and caramel soar from the glass of this incredibly intense wine. 96 Points, ROBERT PARKER, The Wine Advocate

    Encircled by a massive property wall, the Wieden vineyard adjoins the winery. Vines from the Wieden old Gruner Veltliner rootstocks have also been planted on the terraces of the neighbouring Kreuzberg vineyard and this wine is a blend of the two sites. PWS

    From stony and sandy soils in Krems (Wieden, Wachtberg and Kögl, all planted with the old family clone), the 2017 Grüner Veltliner Wieden is ripe, bright and intense on the nose with delicate flinty aromas in the background. Juicy-piquant and mouthfilling, this is an elegant, intense, persistently aromatic and quite powerful but still delicious Veltliner with intense fruit and delicate freshness with grip and stimulating salinity.     crewcap. This Beaujolais cherrybomb is drawn from 20- to 40-year-old vines grown on dark, granite soils around the Chermette homestead in Saint-Vérand (southern Beaujolais). The winemaking here has remained unchanged for decades, with traditional whole-bunch, semi-carbonic ferment in concrete tanks and then maturation in tank and ancient oak casks still the order of the day.

    As opposed to his age-worthy Crus from Moulin-a-Vent, Fleurie, et al, Chermette's aim here is to produce something light-bodied and cherry-fruited with reach-for-another-glass charm--something the juicy-crunchy 2019 nails with ease. From one of the region's great addresses, this is a punchy and buoyant red that goes down dangerously easily. PWS

    Pale peach skin color. Fresh citrus fruits, red berries and a hint of nectarine on the incisive, mineral-accented nose. Silky and focused on the palate, offering light-bodied strawberry, tangerine and succulent herb flavors. Finishes smooth and subtly sweet, with a repeating red berry note and good tenacity.     Manzanilla is the appellation name for a Fino sherry which is raised at Sanlúcar de Barrameda, a relatively cool, humid seaside village. The resultant sherry has a definite tang of the sea, and perhaps a suggestion of camomile flower (manzanilla is Spanish for camomile). Much finer, and more delicate than finos from Jerez, inland, and usually bottled at about 15% alcohol.

    We bottle and ship fresh every two months, to ensure this definitively crisp, refreshing young white wine is always in spanky form. Camomile and oyster-shell aromatics, Chablis-like mid-palate fruit, long and tangy. SCOTT WASLEY

    Shaw + Smith M3 Chardonnay is a wine of note. It’s a wine with a view, as in we all have one of it. It’s come a long way over the years.

    I like my flint and funk but when I first opened this it was alarming. It was a matchbox factory. Some chardonnays need a decant and a wait. Give this time and it shows both power and poise, its grapefruit, custard apple and stone fruit flavours woven expertly with cedar, oatmeal, almond milk and matches. It has a quartz-like aspect, a bristle to its brilliance. It’s narrow but it’s not lean; there’s more than enough power to its fruit. It should drink quite sensationally, from appropriate glassware, in another 2-4 years. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

    It’s from such an unusual/cold/late season that shiraz was picked four weeks later than average.

    It’s a peppery, twiggy, bunchy shiraz. It smells, feels and tastes like the result of a cool season. This wine will split drinkers down the middle. It’s smoky, herbal, berried, smooth-skinned and stringy at once. It both walks the tightrope and is one. There are menthol, alpine herb, walnut and peppercorn characters here in abundance. There are also substantial ropes of well-placed tannin. It’s a medium-bodied wine with a great deal to say. CAMMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

    What can we say about this wonderful producer? Nothing that hasn't already been said. The consistency and quality is really quite astonishing and with Adama Wadawitz at the winemaking helm this a trend that will continue its upward trajectory. Their secret has been to continually improve and tweak the operations and that shows in every bottle. One of Australia's great estates. PWS

    haw & Smith can seem to do no wrong. I know you have probably heard us use that line before but when we say it, we say it for a reason. Shaw + Smith was established in 1989 by cousins Michael Hill Smith MW and Martin Shaw and have continued to build a formidable team including Master of Wine David LeMire, Senior Winemaker Adam Wadewitz, Business Manager Grant Lovelock and Group Viticulturist Murray Leake.

    Certainly Adam Wadewitz has been a driving force and even as the wines continue to change and evolve there is no doubt to the talent that he brings to the game. This is possibly one of the best release of M3 and continues to be one of Australia's great Chardonnay's. PWS

    Shaw + Smith M3 Chardonnay is in quite exceptional form.

    Brilliant release. Great intensity both to the palate and the finish and with plenty going on besides. Flint, smoke, grapefruit and stone fruit characters but it’s the emphatic energy of the finish that really sets it apart. One sip and I was hooked, convinced, and in its thrall.     Pale lemon-gold colored, the 2018 Carmes de Rieussec is a little youthfully mute to begin, offering glimpses at lemon meringue pie, lime cordial and beeswax scents with touches of baking bread and marzipan.     The 2018 is another top notch release for this beloved wine. It's so perky and fun, the overall feeling is one of playfulness and excitement rather than the often imposing nature of its big brother. It is both thirst slacking and simultaneously moreish. Lashings of tingly minerality and fresh acidity are what really set this up as a delight to drink. Lovely right now with a lighter dessert or some cheese but I would be tempted to put it away for a handful of years, I think that energy and buoyancy will hold in in good stead for a while to come.     Bouzy and Ambonnay are the epicentre of pinot noir in Champagne, and the Clouet family is the priviledged custodian of eight hectares of estate vines in the best middle slopes of both villages.  These are rich and concentrated expressions of pinot noir, wines of deep complexity, multi faceted interest and engaging character, yet with remarkable restraint and sense of control.  Recent tastings confirm my impression that this small and relatively unknown grower ranks high among Champagne's finest practitioners of pinot noir - and expresses one of the best value of all.

    Release after release, year after year, I have always marvelled at the lemon blossom freshness that Clouet manages to capture in pinot noir from two of Champagne's most powerful terroirs.  Here it is again, in a captivating interplay of fleshy mirabelle plums, white peaches, crunchy golden delicious apples, and even a hint of pepper.  Wild honey and mixed spice join the maelstrom along the way, gliding obediently into a well defined finish of soft minerality and integrated dosage.

    Stepping into Pol Roger's production facility in Epernay is like entering a different world.  'We call this the kitchen, ' introduced Laurent d'Harcourt, recently promoted Managing Director of the company.  This was not like any kitchen I'd ever seen.  Immaculately polished stainless steel tanks perfectly reflected shiny white tiles and snow-white surfaces.  It was if we were entering a brain surgery until or a NASA assembly room, and I had an uneasy feeling that I might be asked to don a body suit, lest I contaminate this precision machine with a single molecule of foreign material.  I have been buying Pol Roger for decades, but it was not until that moment that everything about this celestial estate suddenly snapped into perfect focus.  The champagnes that emerge from this extraterrestrial building are as desperately precise, intricately delicate and flawlessly pristine as its polished interior, revealing the manifesto that defines all that lies within.

    A blend of three champagne varieties in roughly equal proportions; 20% reserve wines; 150 parcels from 30 crus; 36-48 months on lees in bottle; 9-10 g/L dosage; bottle code indicates packaging date, with the first digit of denoting the year, and next three digits the day of that year.

    Pol Roger's infamous 'White Foil' is an attractive and refreshing aperitif style, as clean, crisp and well constructed as ever.  A sneak preview of the pristine 2008 base on the eve of its release is elegantly refreshing, harmonising lemon, white peach and nectarine purity of fruit and restraint.  Hints of apple and nougat glide over an elegant structure of soft, mineral presence.  The 2007 base has taken on a nutty, creamy persona, accented by subtle spice, showing a little more richness as it approaches the end of its run, yet retaining all of its fresh citrus energy.  While disgorgement dates are not marked on bottles, the packaging date on the carton is about three months after disgorgement.

    This has quite a bit of sulphur on the nose at first, but it clears with aeration. It remains tightly-coiled, with lemon, honey, apricot and limestone, demonstrating fine minerality. The palate has great tension on the entry, quite spicy and nutty in style, with a vibrant, zesty finish. This is an exuberant Sigalas-Rabaud with great potential. NEAL MARTIN

    A very full wine, with good but unobtrusive sweetness and above all a great brightness / freshness to the middle-fruit that, together with the just-enough acidity, take this remarkably full yet pure wine through to a very fine, minty, tight finish. This is clearly about to become the closest recent vintage to this château's golden days of the 60s. It reminds me of a latter day version of the great 67.  BILL BLATCH

    The 2006 Château Langoa Barton has a lifted nose of small dark cherries, blackberry, incense and marmalade - quite showy for Langoa Barton - but there is joie-de-vivre here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, ripe and demonstrating impressive density plus a firm grip. This really coats the mouth in tannin, although it is still balanced. It just needs another 4-5 years in bottle. NEAL MARTIN

    The 2016 Rieussec has an elegant bouquet of pure honeysuckle, orange pith, peach and light minerally aromas. The palate is well balanced with fine precision and pleasant fatness, featuring white peach and almond-infused, honeyed fruit. A touch of vanilla emerges toward the finish.     Picked predominantly over 10 days from October 14, the 2010 d'Yquem has 141gms/L residual sugar and pH 3.80. It is a slow-burner, the nose understated at first but unfurling with each passing moment with subtle scents of freshly sliced apricots, Clementine, clear honey and white flowers. There is an underlying minerality that really defines this bouquet. The palate is similar to the nose, revealing hidden facets with almost each swirl of the glass - orange blossom, limestone, white peach and honeysuckle. This is such a precise d'Yquem; it is after you have swallowed the wine that one comprehends just how brilliant it is. (98+) WINE ADVOCATE
