  1. De Bortoli Botrytis Semillon Florence Broadhurst 2016 375mL
De Bortoli Botrytis Semillon Florence Broadhurst 2016 375mL
Our manager Effie Ross has chosen this for her staff pick for 2021, here's why:

This delightful sticky is intended as an approachable, every-day drinking cousin of the treasured national classic, De Bortoli Noble 1. It represents incredible bang for buck and comes ready to drink in a striking 375ml bottle that showcases a design by the late Australian artist Florence Broadhurst. Alluring aromatics of rich ripe oranges, yellow peaches, earl-grey tea, toffee apples, cut hay, and spiced apricot leap out of the glass. It’s pleasantly full-bodied and sugar sweet which is cut nicely with fresh lemon-lime acidity. The flavour carries long on the palate and develops in the glass. This is a complex and well-structured sweet wine, and an excellent example of Riverina botrytis-Semillon. Serve this with cheese, pavlova, or Christmas cake and custard. Recommended reading material includes the history of Australia’s Riverina wine region, or the fascinating and tragic life and work of Florence Broadhurst. EFFIE ROSS, PWS

  2. The Beautiful Isle White Delicious 2018
The Beautiful Isle White Delicious 2018
Beautiful Isle Wines are a tribute to the vibrant apple crate art of Tasmania's 'Apple Isle' hey day. Based on the family estate Marions Vineyard which was once an apple and pear orchard dating back to the 1800's but no planted to a mix of classic red and white varietals.

The white is all the bits and pieces that don't quite make it into the final blends of their other wines, not because they don't make the cut but because there is a little too much here or there.

This is full of tropical fruit and peppery spice that leaps out of the glass. A touch of white flower and some lilting aromatics make it really enticing. Fleshy and plump on the palate a lovely zip of acidity rounds up all that plush fruit and gives it some nice focus. Plenty of energy on the finish.

  3. Murdoch Hills Sulky Rouge 2016
    Murdoch Hills Sulky Rouge 2016
50% Syrah, 25% Pinot Noir 25% Merlot Syrah from an early harvest sourced from our estate vineyard in Oakbank, spontaneous ferment with varying levels of whole bunches combined with a gentle extraction to keep the wine vibrant and delicate. Merlot made in the same technique from a vineyard in Lenswood giving a lush soft red/blue-fruit spectrum, whilst a selection of Pinot Noir from Piccadilly Valley provides exotic spice and a savory edge. Overall a vibrant red-fruited wine with gamey meaty qualities that show bright cherry fruits and underlining spice, the juicy fruit flows on the palate to a fine grainy tannin profile. Only a short maturation in older French oak to retain freshness and purity of fruit, sent to bottle without filtration or fining. MURDOCH HILL

Fruit from a single vineyard, fermented on skins for up to 7 days, pressed to barrel undergoes mlf then aged 16 months. 5. The Beautiful Isle Tamar Valley Pinot Noir 2020
The Beautiful Isle Tamar Valley Pinot Noir 2020
Beautiful Isle Wines are a tribute to the vibrant apple crate art of Tasmania's 'Apple Isle' hey day. Based on the family estate Marions Vineyard which was once an apple and pear orchard dating back to the 1800's but no planted to a mix of classic red and white varietals.

From what looks to be a cracking 2020 vintage this shows with plush fruit and soft pliant tannins that provide a supple structure to the wine. Savoury spice and a hint of black pepper are really enticing and the soft palate is nicely balanced with just a subtle hint of vanillin oak that caresses the red berry fruit gently. It has a wonderful combo of savoury and sweet with a little underbrush and wild bush that adds an extra dimension.

  6. Domaine Simha Simla Field Blend White 2016
Domaine Simha Simla Field Blend White 2016

The 2016 Simla white field blend by Domaine Simha is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Riesling. It is drinking very well right now. A refreshing, aromatic wine with vibrant floral notes and a slight chalkiness. The Chardonnay in the blend provides the depth and complexity this wine so effortlessly displays, and the Riesling offers a lovely line of acidity. Good length, a delicious wine to enjoy with a nice chicken salad. LISA, PWS

  7. Agathist Alchemy Second Wine Grenache 2016
Agathist Alchemy Second Wine Grenache 2016

    100% Grenache, Seppeltsfield, Barossa

Agathist Alchemy is a label from Barossa Valley guru, Craig Isbel who is also one of the people behind Izway Wines. Here he produces two wines from a single vineyard located across the road from his family home. It is owned & farmed organically by vigneron Nick Radford. The wines are produced in small batches of no larger than 500 kilo - wild ferments. The use of sulphur is minimal with tiny amounts used just after malo and at bottling. Other than this no other additions are used whatsoever. These are compact, elegant and character driven wines from a Barossa valley expert.

This is a cracker… A wild perfume of red berries, briar, fennel, undergrowth, old campfire. Really quite compelling. Just on medium weight, serious ‘pinosity’, if that’s a thing, light, fine, silken flow, slender grip of tannin dips into savouriness and yet the wine finds succulence in pure, red berry and rose water fruit character. Sheesh, this is fine grenache.’ MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Front

  9. Maidenii Dry Vermouth 750ml
    Maidenii Dry Vermouth 750ml
Dry is the lightest in colour and is slightly alpine on the nose, you can taste the citrus apples, apricot from the viognier (at least I told myself I could) and there is an intense cardamom and cinnamon spice element. You can add this to a martini, but I want this chilled over ice with a wad of orange and that’s about it. BEN KNIGHT, The Guardian

  10. Dr Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 2016 375mL
Dr Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 2016 375mL
Still very youthful and unready, but packed with flavour. Beautiful fruit and silky acidity. This is a raw diamond. Drink from 2018 to 2050. (95) STUART PIGOTT, jamessuckling.com

Fresh apple, quince preserves and vanilla cream mingle on the nose and the creamy, buoyant palate. Honeysuckle and heliotrope lend seductive inner-mouth perfume. This finishes with a lovely sense of lift and with just enough primary juiciness to remain animating. DAVID SCHILDKNECHT, Vinous Media

  11. Shadowfax Little Hampton Pinot Noir 2016
Shadowfax Little Hampton Pinot Noir 2016

Pinot noir from the Little Hampton vineyard makes it into the Shadowfax Macedon Ranges Pinot Noir but this is the single vineyard release. It’s from a one hectare plot of pinot noir planted in 1998/1999. This is only the second release but its reputation is on the fast rise. RRP has gone from $55 to $65 in the past year too.

Belter of a pinot noir. Lashed with spice, dressed with anise and sweet-sour cherry, laced with woodsmoke, long and sinewy. Intriguing, exciting, silken and just plain enjoyable. It should mature handsomely. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front 2018

  12. Craiglee Shiraz 2017
    Craiglee Shiraz 2017
Pure, unadulterated Craiglee shiraz. Nothing like it. It's the fragrance, the confluence of dark and red fruit, the grind of black pepper, the thyme and its savoury nature. It retains a certain elegance and length across the more medium-bodied palate. Fresh acidity and grainy tannins neatly in tow. Lovely now, even better in years to come. 13. Gunderloch Rothenberg Riesling Auslese 2016 375mL
Gunderloch Rothenberg Riesling Auslese 2016 375mL
Lush and exotic in the nose, but oh so racy and brilliant on the palate, this is a stunning Auslese with a mineral finish that is filigree and intense. Best from 2018 through 2040. (95) STUART PIGOTT, jamessuckling.com

Made from grapes with 30/40% botrytised berries, the 2016 Rothenberg Riesling Auslese has a clear citrus colour and opens with a bright, fresh and concentrated bouquet of grapefruits, lemons and wet stones. Round and deliciously lush on the palate, this is a mouth-filling, highly elegant, piquant and salty Auslese with nice grip, grapefruit flavors on the aftertaste and pencil wood on the finish. Really stimulating. Very erotic and provided with great aging potential. (Roughly 100 grams of residual sugar.) (94) STEPHAN REINHARDT, The Wine Advocate

    Yarra Yering Chardonnay 2018
The vineyard was planted in 1969. The wine was made by Sarah Crowe. The run of form, significant.
Quality juice. It has that extra crackle, that extra spark. Nectarine, pear, a touch of the tropics, white honey, cedarwood and mineral. Silken and searing at once. It all drives forward, it all drives on, there's little spread sideways and yet it's not short of flesh. Wonderful white wine. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, Wine Front

  15. SC Pannell Koomilya CP Cabernet Sauvignon 2016
SC Pannell Koomilya CP Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

A block regenerated by the Pannells since they purchased it in '12, it produces small berries in small bunches of intensely flavoured grapes. Hand-picked, 10 days on skins, pressed to French puncheons for 19 months maturation. It is the only unblended wine so far made and sold under the Koomilya banner, 4560 bottles made. It is a wine of beauty, with effortless poise and flawless fruit that is medium to full-bodied at most. How long will it live? Try 40 years (99) JAMES HALLIDAY

    Yarra Yering Chardonnay 2017
We're in a good place now. Chardonnay has had its feast and its famine, its jokes and its cut downs. Now we can all get some sleep. This chardonnay has created a beautiful home, line and length both covered and strung, flavour allowed to roam, varietal character served unapologetically, flint notes given rope but not free reign, length pushed out to the horizon. The word stellar springs. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, Wine Front
