  3. Gunderloch Fritz Riesling 2020
    Gunderloch Fritz Riesling 2020

How do they do it? This has been a PWS favourite for some time now and it never fails to deliver. Made by Rheinhessen legends Gunderloch with vineyards  close to the Rhines south-east steep slopes. The combination of the red slate soil, the proximity to the river, the exposure to the sun and the steepness of the vineyards - are perfect for producing wonderful ripeness. If you are a German riesling fan it would be hard to beat this for the sheer quality and insane value it represents.

The wine shows lovely stone fruit, peach and pithy characters as it opens in the glass. There is a salty mineral hit to that is really lovely. The fresh natural acidity zip through the ripe and spice flecked palate while a little aromatic lift gives this some real interest. Dry, fresh and full of character. PWS

Winery of Good Hope Pinotage 2020
The newest independent winery run by Alex Dale and friends in the Helderberg sub-region, is an emerging star on the Cape wine scene producing wines of complete quality, yet expressing their individuality. John Platter the doyen and king maker has already tabbed them as 5 star winemakers.

This wine displays a refreshing yet juicy palate with black berries, plums, wild black fruits and a wonderful, natural sucrosité. This is energetic and fresh with the fruit lending itself perfect to the whole-berry fremermentation that gove this a lovely spice hit. It has a lithe texture with integrated, supple tannins and some attractive spice on the finish. Incredibly moreish! They certainly have captured the essence of the beautiful cape in the bottle here.

  5. Escondido Equilibrio Mei e Meio Red Blend 2015
Escondido Equilibrio Mei e Meio Red Blend 2015
Escondido Wines is the project of Michael Wren who was a winemaker for one of Portugal's top producers, Esporao, before opening Wren Estate, based in Heathcote. Whilst running their Douro winery, Quinta dos Murcas, Wren sourced grapes from a brilliant vineyard, in the cooler Dao region to the south of the Douro. The Dao is marked by higher altitudes and heavy granite soils and for Wren this region is the true home of Portugal's best known red variety - Touriga Nacional. The Dao produces pretty, structured Touriga Nacional that is bright and blue fruited with fresh acidity with clear mineral notes.

The Escondido Meio e Meio comes from 2015 which was a very cool vintage, so this wine was very tightly wound when first botted but has opened up beautifully and is drinking wonderfully at present. Meio e Meio translates as half/half, referring to the composition of the wine. 50% Touriga Nacional and 50% Jaen (Mencia in Spain) which brings some balancing red fruit and tannin to the blend.

  6. Badenhorst Secateurs Chenin Blanc 2020
    Badenhorst Secateurs Chenin Blanc 2020

AA Badenhorst Family Wines are grown, made and matured on Kalmoesfontein farm in
the Swartland appellation of South Africa. The 28ha of old bushvines grow in the
Siebritskloof part of the Paardeberg mountain.

Cousins Hein and Adi Badenhorst are at the helm of this fantastic estate with a rich history in the region. Adi was a founding member of the Swartland Revolution and Swartland Independent and is a parrot farmer, LP collector, egg poaching pro, tea connoisseur, Land Cruiser driver, ponytail wearer and local legend (just ask him).

Classic styled Cape Chenin but with a wonderful modern outlook. Floral and honey-dew melon with a touch of citrus and steely notes. The mouth has the lightest touch of sweetness that is quckly drawn out by the bone-drying acidity which lend a wonderful poise and light touch to the wine. This comes of dry, don't worry but has a lovely plush element to the fruit. Great stuff and may have you falling in love with Chenin and South African wines on one-foul-swoop! PWS

  7. The Blacksmith Bare Bones Cinsault 2019
The Blacksmith Bare Bones Cinsault 2019
Tremayne Smith studied to be a chef. Influenced by his father's love of wine, he then decided to take up a career in winemaking and graduated in 2007. After an internship at De Trafford, he was employed full time as the assistant winemaker and vineyard manager for Sijnn, later Mullineux, and now as winemaker at Fable.

In 2014 Tremayne started his own project - The Blacksmith, which is still a very small production label, using varieties that he has a great respect and appreciation for. What inspired The Blacksmith was working with cultivars such as Cinsault, Carignan and Grenache, both locally and during his travels abroad. The Blacksmith's philosophy is to make natural wines that are both appealing and soul-satisfying.

We love this wine. Not much single varietal cinsault on the market and when winemakers get it right it's so good. Well Tremayne has got it very right! This leaps out with sunny red fruits and a melange of fine crushed spices. The palate zips along on with racy acidity that cuts crystaline through the wild and plush, red berry fruits. There is a wild floursih to this wine we love and it has so much character while remaining so ewasy to enjoy. PWS

  8. Rossouw Gouws & Clarke Pinotage 2019
Rossouw Gouws & Clarke Pinotage 2019

Wine distributors David and Jeanette Clarke along with Intellego winemaker Jurgen Gouws have for a while made a very palatable Pinotage in a new wave style, which is to say light and fresh. Previously they used grapes grown by Andrew Wightman of Swartland property Môrelig but in 2019 they worked with Scholtz Rossouw who also farms in the Paardeberg, the vineyard in question planted in 1968.

Winemaking involving carbonic maceration, the nose shows cherry and raspberry plus herbs, spice and a little earthiness while the palate is pure and fresh with crunchy tannins. Perfect for summer al fresco dining, this is a useful reference when it comes to plotting the way forward for Pinotage – see further thoughts on the subject here. Approximate retail price: R140 a bottle. CHRISTIAN EEDES, Winemag.co.za

  9. Georg Breuer Rudesheim Estate Riesling 2016
Georg Breuer Rudesheim Estate Riesling 2016
The 2016 Rheingau Riesling Rüdesheim "Estate" is super clear, bright and elegant on the nose, with lovely stony-mineral notes, almost stone dust but also beautiful concentration. On the palate, this is a round, juicy, very fruity but clear, piquant, well-structured and finely mineral Rheingau classic at 11.5% alcohol. It drinks perfectly today and will also do so over the next 15 to 20 years. Sweetness and acidity are in perfect balance here (8.4 grams per litre). A highly filigreed and delicate Riesling. 10. Wittmann Estate Riesling 2020
    Wittmann Estate Riesling 2020
Wonderful peach, melon and floral nose. Concentrated, racy and filigree with intense, chalky minerality at the long, polished and playful finish. STUART PIGOTT, jamessuckling.com

Gorgeously juicy little number that delivers ample punch and intensity as it races across the palate. So primary and full of life right now that it's a joy to drink at this early stage. Pithy, grippy, mineral and enlivening, this is yet another exemplary estate Riesling from the master. As completely delicious as it is now I would like to see it in a decade or so, but opening one now, or in fact at any time in its evolution, won't be a shame. Ripping wine. ROSCOE
