In our golden-yellow crystal-clear wheat beer the fresh citrus flavour harmonises very well with spicy banana notes. The fine sparkling gives it a tangy and animated appearance. Throughout summer and winter, it’s a prickling experience. It goes well with fish, seafood, white meat or it can be enjoyed as an aperitif. 4. Merinas Airen Viura 2020
    Merinas Airen Viura 2020
A blend of Airén, Viura and Verdejo grapes from organic dry-farmed vineyards. This is under the Mesta umbrella of which we have featured numerous wines over the years. They represent incredible value given the quality material that goes into their wines. Here, the vines are over 30 years average age and managed as an integrated ecosystem where no pesticides are used, organic manure is the only fertiliser applied and weed control is done by light, superficial tilling.

There is a lovely soft mix of peach, apple and summer tree fruits sprinkled with a gentle white pepper element. Round, juicy and refreshing with punchy flavours that burst onto the palate. Unoaked and unadulterated and all the better for it. It finishes crisp and clean.

  6. Finca Constanca Altozano Tempranillo 2019
    Finca Constanca Altozano Tempranillo 2019
Finca Constancia is located in the province of Toledo, in Castilla-La Mancha, about 100 km from Madrid.

Acquired by González Byass in 2001, it was chosen, after an exhaustive search, for its variety of different soil types and the continental climate and low rainfall during the ripening process, which in turn ensures healthy grapes. They practice precision viticulture throughout the vineyard to ensure they achieve the highest levels of quality.

Under the guidance of winemaker Beatriz Paniagua, as always, the selection process begins in the vineyard. Prior to alcoholic fermentation they are cold macerated, at 5oC, in contact with their skins so as to retain the fruit aromas and produce a bright, intense colour.

Explosion of aromas of ripe red fruits and hints of liquorice underpin the character and personality of this 100% Tempranillo. At the same time, notes of toffee and vanilla from ageing in barrel stand out. Soft and pleasant palate with exquisite well integrated tannins and a balance of preverves and ripe jammy fruits. How much? Wow!

  7. El Circo Tempranillo 2018
    El Circo Tempranillo 2018
This is a little beauty from Cariñena (not the grape) between Madrid and Barcelona. Its sourced from young vines of a single vineyard that sits about 450m above sea level helping to temper the warm summer sun. 100% Tempranillo it sees no new oak and is 100% organic fruit to boot!

This is good stuff for the money. A cocktail of sweet black, red and blueberry fruit leaps out of the glass followed by cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove spice. There is an earthy undertone that pulls all the fruit together nicely and its soft, supple tannins add a nice layer of complexity. This is nicely focused and drinks more seriously than a lot of other Spanish Tempranillo at this price point. PWS

  8. Campo Flores Tinto 2019
    Campo Flores Tinto 2019
The grapes sourced for the Campo Flores wines come from sun drenched, organically farmed vineyards in the centre of Spain. Each wine is handmade and reflects the personality of the land and terroir. Warning! This wine is immensely drinkable and we bet you will be hitting us up for more. It not the first time we have put it in a pack or floor stacked it in the store because it's just bloody delicious!

Supple ripe strawberry and blackcurrant fruit leaps out of the glass with swirl of earthy licorice that gently lurks. Spiced cola and black pepper poke their heads in and the little dash of syrah just adds another dimension to the wine. Some fine tannins run through the supple fruit and this is altogether more serious then either the label or the price point would allude too.

  9. Gunderloch Fritz Riesling 2020
    Gunderloch Fritz Riesling 2020

How do they do it? This has been a PWS favourite for some time now and it never fails to deliver. Made by Rheinhessen legends Gunderloch with vineyards  close to the Rhines south-east steep slopes. The combination of the red slate soil, the proximity to the river, the exposure to the sun and the steepness of the vineyards - are perfect for producing wonderful ripeness. If you are a German riesling fan it would be hard to beat this for the sheer quality and insane value it represents.

The wine shows lovely stone fruit, peach and pithy characters as it opens in the glass. There is a salty mineral hit to that is really lovely. The fresh natural acidity zip through the ripe and spice flecked palate while a little aromatic lift gives this some real interest. Dry, fresh and full of character. PWS

  10. La Purisima Estio Tinto Monastrell Blend 2019
La Purisima Estio Tinto Monastrell Blend 2019

La Purisima is a sort of 'post-modern' co-op, doing some really sensational 'estate-style' wines from holdings of very old, dry grown, original clone, ungrafted Monastrell. La Purisima is in the township of Yecla, which gives its name to the Denominacion de Origen, D.O. Yecla, about 1.5 hours inland, due west from Alicante. It's also very high up, with vineyards as high as 1100m above sea level. Summer heat is tempered by altitude, while winter is both extremely cold, and also quite dry (average rainfall is 12 inches per annum.) No irrigation.

Low crop, high levels of vineyard vigilance, organic growing techniques, picked in the cooler hours of the day (mornings) and packed into small crates, begins a process of meticulous winemaking. The grapes then go through several selection passes, followed by 'must' chilling and fermentation in stainless steel.

The original clones of Monastrell grown on their own roots from old bush vines, dry grown. This is a simple wine, but really good. Very varietal warm bitumen/dried fig/honey/black fruit Monastrell, given a bit of a juicy-jubey touch up from the Syrah in the blend. Very silky to the tongue with decent length and a nice sense of taper on the palate to a finish where the fruit tannins live. PWS

  11. Cantarrana Verdejo 2020
    Cantarrana Verdejo 2020

The Agrícola Castellana Cooperative, situated in the heart of the Rueda D.O., was set up in La Seca (Valladolid) by small number of dedicated vine growers wishing to add value to their products.

Today, it consists of some 400 members who cultivate 2000 hectares of vineyards with modern equipment for the production of 7 millions of litres of wine per harvest and facilities for manufacturing one million of these in oak.

The Bodega has up to date machinery for the reception of the grapes, pneumatic presses and temperature controlled, stainless steel vessels for fermentation, all of wich have contributed enormously to improve the quality of the wines.

Another spot on release brimming with summer fruit salad, with a lovely peachy lift. It's juicy and fleshy with just a little snap on the palate to keep it fresh. Drink don't think! PWS

  12. Isaac Fernandez Acentor Garnacha 2016
    Isaac Fernandez Acentor Garnacha 2016
Isaac Fernández Selección is a unique collaborative venture between two individuals - Isaac Fernández Montaña one of Spain's most acclaimed winemakers and Aurelio Cabestrero. Working with old vine fruit and from some of the oldest DO's in Spain they are bringing together a wealth of experience. It's a shame this is the only wine coming into the country because it is a belter!

Dark violet with spicey accented cherry and dark berry aromas. There is a touch of cola and vanilla  that sits nicely against the fresh dark fruit. Tons of energy and it seems to sizzle along in the mouth, offering sweet red and blue fruit and spicecake flavors. There is a bit of tannic grip and that touch of wild herbs that leads into a smokey finish where the tannins melt back into the sweet fruits. This is a great example of what a bit of thought and effort can bring to a wine that overdelivers in spades!

The vineyards of Camino Real are located in the heart of La Rioja, surrounded by mountain Sierra de Cantabria and river Ebro on the south. This area has an ancient tradition of winemaking and perfect conditions for Tempranillo. Camino Real combines an extraordinary quality, true character of the region and love for wine. This is 100% Tempranillo from a selection of old vineyards, between 50 and 70 years old, located in San Vicente de la Sonsierra. All the grape are manual harvested with fermentation is steel tank for freshness and just 4 months in new barrels for a lick of oak.

Violet colour with a hint of ruby. Compelling nose of fresh blackcurrants, plums and other dark forest fruits. There is also a gentle herbal and oak notes. Elegant and fruity wine, with wild forest fruits, with raspberries and black cherries to the fore. Tannins are soft  supple nicely balanced with acidity that offsets the sweet fruits. PWS

Avaniel Tinto Ribera del Duero 2019

Bodegas Monteabellón is located in the heart of the Ribera del Duero with 52 hectares of vineyards (mainly Tempranillo) around the township of Nava de Roa. Isaac Fernandez, nephew of the legendary Vega Sicilia ex- winemaker, Marino Garcia, is the inspiration behind this relatively new venture.

The production at the winery is a thoroughly modern affair that draws on nearly 140 hectares of vineyards. The plots are spread over the Ribera, Rioja and Rueda with the mainstay wines those from their excellent Ribera holdings.

Avaniel is made from grapes from one or the freshest young plots called "Los Miles". It is also one of the youngest vineyard with vines within 6 and 10 years. Violet and damson with wild forest fruits and plum pudding, spice cake character. There are intriguing mountain herbs and salt bush flavours supporting plump cool blue fruits and black raspberry cool-aid. The tannins are fine grained and feel off in the distance providing gentle structure to the easy drinking fruit. PWS

  15. Marsilea Premier Bobal 2018
    Marsilea Premier Bobal 2018
A family-owned winery and cellar; 60 hectares of vineyards around the small village of Sinarcas, on an 800-metre high plateau inland from Valencia and close to the border with Castilla-La Mancha, surrounded by a pine forest. Sebastian Mancebo makes terrific organic wines mostly from native Bobal, alongside alternatives like Gewürztraminer.

Vines are typically more than 40 years old and planted at altitudes of 900 meters. The grapes are hand-sorted before the fermentation and the partially crushed grapes are then subjected to low temperature for the extraction of primary, fruit aromas. The fermentation is done at low temperatures (18ºC) in temperature with no oak.

A brilliant cherry-red colour, of medium intensity and purplish highlights. It has a bouquet of wild flowers and a salty minerality, typical of the regions' soils. Forceful yet velvety on the palate. Fruity with notes of blackberries, it hides a slight bitterness that balances the fruit, with a persistent and long finish. PWS

  16. Lopez de Haro Rioja Blanco 2019
Lopez de Haro Rioja Blanco 2019
An ethos that blends attention to detail with the high quality old vineyards to create authentic contemporary classics. Based in the historic town of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, in  the heart of DOCa Rioja surrounded to the north by the Sierra Cantabria and to the south by the Ebro  river. The microclimate of the area and its clay-calcareous soils generate the perfect conditions for the vineyards.

This is 100% viura from from old vines planted in poor soils on a hillside near San Vicente de la Sonsierra. Selection in the vineyard with a controlled maceration with its skins for about 4 or six hours for a little phenolic grip. Fermented in French oak barrels for three months.

This is lovely and fresh with a hint of honey toasted oak that sits nicely with the bright clean fruit. So many of the traditional Rioja blanco are overly oaked and lacking freshness so this was a very pleasant surprise when we tasted it. Lots of lovely peachy, pear and apple fruit played of pretty oak flavours in a medium bodied style that is very charming.

  17. Valdespino PX Yellow 750ml
    Valdespino PX Yellow 750ml
With six centuries of sherry production under their belts, Valdespino lay claim to being one of the oldest sherry bodegas in the region. The heart of Valdespino is their vineyards. One of the few bodegas to release single-vineyard wines, their Macharnudo holding is one of the grand crus of Jerez at the highest altitude and located on the famous, and sought-after bright white Albariza chalk soils.

From their savory and fresh Manzanilla Deliciosa and Fino Inocente, to their unctuous and intense Solera 1842 and Pedro Ximenez wines, the quality is world class and the bodega still ferment a proportion of their wines in wood, adding layers of complexity to the finish product. One of the few estates that age in solera far in excess of the DO regulations for all their styles of sherry.

This is outstanding value PX with rasins, Christmas spice, grilled walnut in a lovely rich yet fresh frame. Don't get us wrong, it's sweet and delicious but still comes of with some nice bright citrus peel and orange fruit. Yum!

  20. Gorrondona Txakoli 2019
    Gorrondona Txakoli 2019

Doniene Gorrondona are one of a bunch of young Basque wineries who are elevating the classic, lean, dry, Txakoli style from the tourist fodder poured from great height in tiny bars along the lanes of San Sebastian into serious wine. Concentrating on organic farming, being careful with clonal and site selection and forgoing commercial yeasts. Although thankfully this doesn't prevent their wines from being seriously good in when consumed alongside huge helping of Pinxhos in rowdy atmospheres.

Gorrondona Txakoli is made from the traditional Basque varietals Hondurabi Zuri (85%) with little bits of Iskirita Zuri Hadia (15%). It’s handpicked and fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel, kept on lees for six months before being racked, then put through a single course filter and bottled.

Gorrondona shows cut grass, fresh lime leaf and white floral aromatics, almost reminiscent of dry Clare Valley Riesling. The palate is lean and tight, driven by a citric acid that makes it an ideal match for the salt-laden dishes of the Basque Country.

The microclimate of the area and its clay-calcareous soils generate the perfect conditions for the vineyard, especially for Tempranillo.

Manual harvest and spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts and small amounts of sulfur are added. Aging: 18 months in French, Eastern European and American oak barrels. 10% of new barrels and 90% of used barrels from 2 to 6 uses.

A heady mix of aromas cocoa and vanilla that envelopes smashed black ripe fruits. Lots of tempranillo liquorice aromas with a spicy lift that leads into an elegant flavour profile matched with juicy black fruit backed by typical tempranillo structure. Isaac Fernandez works in a number of regions and with several varieties, but his standout wines come from the old Garnacha bush-vines grown in the highest, rockiest, iron-laden soils of DO Campo de Borja. Isaac is nephew of Mariano Garcia, famous as head winemaker at Vega Sicilia in the late 20th century. Mariano is patron of the Mauro wine group which he founded after leaving Vega. Isaac commenced his career with Mariano, working 20 years at Mauro before stretching his wings as a consultant from 2005 (in conjunction with a US importer, Aurelio Cabestrero).
