  1. La Purisima Estio Tinto Monastrell Blend 2019
La Purisima Estio Tinto Monastrell Blend 2019

La Purisima is a sort of 'post-modern' co-op, doing some really sensational 'estate-style' wines from holdings of very old, dry grown, original clone, ungrafted Monastrell. La Purisima is in the township of Yecla, which gives its name to the Denominacion de Origen, D.O. Yecla, about 1.5 hours inland, due west from Alicante. It's also very high up, with vineyards as high as 1100m above sea level. Summer heat is tempered by altitude, while winter is both extremely cold, and also quite dry (average rainfall is 12 inches per annum.) No irrigation.

Low crop, high levels of vineyard vigilance, organic growing techniques, picked in the cooler hours of the day (mornings) and packed into small crates, begins a process of meticulous winemaking. The grapes then go through several selection passes, followed by 'must' chilling and fermentation in stainless steel.

The original clones of Monastrell grown on their own roots from old bush vines, dry grown. This is a simple wine, but really good. Very varietal warm bitumen/dried fig/honey/black fruit Monastrell, given a bit of a juicy-jubey touch up from the Syrah in the blend. Very silky to the tongue with decent length and a nice sense of taper on the palate to a finish where the fruit tannins live. PWS

  2. Isaac Fernandez Acentor Garnacha 2016
    Isaac Fernandez Acentor Garnacha 2016
Isaac Fernández Selección is a unique collaborative venture between two individuals - Isaac Fernández Montaña one of Spain's most acclaimed winemakers and Aurelio Cabestrero. Working with old vine fruit and from some of the oldest DO's in Spain they are bringing together a wealth of experience. It's a shame this is the only wine coming into the country because it is a belter!

Dark violet with spicey accented cherry and dark berry aromas. There is a touch of cola and vanilla  that sits nicely against the fresh dark fruit. Tons of energy and it seems to sizzle along in the mouth, offering sweet red and blue fruit and spicecake flavors. There is a bit of tannic grip and that touch of wild herbs that leads into a smokey finish where the tannins melt back into the sweet fruits. This is a great example of what a bit of thought and effort can bring to a wine that overdelivers in spades!

  3. Parajes del Valle Jumilla Monastrell 2018
Parajes del Valle Jumilla Monastrell 2018
Maria Jover, a 28 year old winemaker heads up the thoroughly modern operations at Parajes del Valle. The organic Monastrell grapes come from very old vines (20-40 years old), organic, maintained from the old system of "Terraje".

The system entails a renting of the vineyards to the local farmers who take care of the quality of the vines and are given back a 7% of the production to the land owner. Most of the 80-90 year old vines in Jumilla are maintained that way, but changing views has seen many turn back to a focus on productive irrigated vineyard's rather than quality fruit.

The goal of the cellar is to maintain the old vines of the "Terraje" system by paying the grapes a higher price, and therefore maintaining the higher quality those old vines yield.

A noble cause and one that is paying dividends. We have encountered several wineries with similar systems or focus on lower yields and quality fruit and the resultant wines show a much more lifted and vibrant style of Monastrell that we really love. The same is absolutely true here. Still that mulberry and pencil lead but with a halo of vibrant red fruit and lifted aromatics. There is a snap of tannin and crunch of acidity that keeps everything on point. Good stuff! PWS

  4. Artomana Txakolina 2019
    Artomana Txakolina 2019
This estate wine is a blend of varieties dominated by Hondarrabi Zuri (70%) with equal parts of Izkiriota, Izkiriota Ttippia and Hondarrabi Zuri Zerratia. The parcels are hand-picked separately and left to cold soak for 24 hours at 10 C°. This increases both volume and aromatic complexity in the final wine. The wines ferment spontaneously with vineyard yeasts and spend four months on lees in stainless steel before bottling.

So racy and lemon pithy with a nice punch of tropical fruits. There is slight shebert fizz to the clean and crispy fruit. The light sparkling edge lends energy and vibrancy to an already fresh palate. So easy to know back. PWS

  5. Adras Mencia 2016
    Adras Mencia 2016

100% Mencia, 90% 50-year-old vines from the Amandi sub-region and 10% from 40 year old vines in Ribeiras do Miño

This a fuller richer version then the 2015 and shows a touch more sweet oak on the nose and palate. That same garrique and dark cherry fruit is layered over licorice and smoky minerality with a dried flower accents. Like the nose the palate is richly fruited with a lovely earthy current that sits beneath the surface of the sweet fruit. Snappy tannins run through the palate and a crunch bit of acidity plays off the cherry, red berry flavours. PWS

  6. Telmo Rodriguez Gaba do Xil Mencia 2018
Telmo Rodriguez Gaba do Xil Mencia 2018
The entry-level red 2018 Gaba do Xil Tinto is mostly Mencía with some other grapes from the mixed plantings in old vineyards. It fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel, where it matured for 12 months before bottling. This was a cooler vintage and went back to harvests from yesteryear. It was not an easy year, but the most successful wines are going to have good freshness. Here, I see more complexity than in the previous vintage; this is less varietal and goes more in the direction of the single-vineyard reds. There is ripeness but without excess, with herbal and spicy aromas and a notable finish. LUIS GUTIERREZ, RobertParker.com

  7. Fedellos do Couto Peixes Peixe da Estrada 2016
Fedellos do Couto Peixes Peixe da Estrada 2016

Sourced from organically farmed vines, the 2016 Peixe da Estrada is a village red blend from old vines (60+ years old) on granite soils in Viana do Bolo planted with multiple red varieties—Mencía, Bastardo, Garnacha Tintorera, Negreda, Grao Negro, Caíño, Aramón, Godello, Dona Branca, Colgadeira, Treixadura, Palomino, Caíño Blanco and Moscatel de Grão Miúdo, etc. It fermented with full clusters and indigenous yeasts and matured in used 500-liter oak barrels and a 3,200-liter oak vat for one year. It has tons of cassis and small berry aromas and is very expressive and balsamic, with brightness and light, in a way that reminds me of some wines from Cachapoal in Chile. The palate has fine tannins and a certain elegance, round but also long. Like all the wines in the project, it's sold without any appellation of origin, and they just replicated the wines from yesteryear, mixing red and white grapes, something that appellations don't usually allow. 9,000 bottles were filled in February 2018. 8. Dr Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 2016 375mL
Dr Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 2016 375mL
Still very youthful and unready, but packed with flavour. Beautiful fruit and silky acidity. This is a raw diamond. Drink from 2018 to 2050. (95) STUART PIGOTT, jamessuckling.com

Fresh apple, quince preserves and vanilla cream mingle on the nose and the creamy, buoyant palate. Honeysuckle and heliotrope lend seductive inner-mouth perfume. This finishes with a lovely sense of lift and with just enough primary juiciness to remain animating. DAVID SCHILDKNECHT, Vinous Media

  9. Gunderloch Rothenberg Riesling Auslese 2016 375mL
Gunderloch Rothenberg Riesling Auslese 2016 375mL
Lush and exotic in the nose, but oh so racy and brilliant on the palate, this is a stunning Auslese with a mineral finish that is filigree and intense. Best from 2018 through 2040. (95) STUART PIGOTT, jamessuckling.com

Made from grapes with 30/40% botrytised berries, the 2016 Rothenberg Riesling Auslese has a clear citrus colour and opens with a bright, fresh and concentrated bouquet of grapefruits, lemons and wet stones. Round and deliciously lush on the palate, this is a mouth-filling, highly elegant, piquant and salty Auslese with nice grip, grapefruit flavors on the aftertaste and pencil wood on the finish. Really stimulating. Very erotic and provided with great aging potential. (Roughly 100 grams of residual sugar.) (94) STEPHAN REINHARDT, The Wine Advocate
