  1. Cantina Tollo Rocca Ventosa Pinot Grigio 2020
Cantina Tollo Rocca Ventosa Pinot Grigio 2020
Cantina Tollo is located in the Italian village of Tollo in the region of Abruzzo. The  vineyards spread from the coastal slopes to the verdant mountains overlooking the Mediterranean.

They produce incredible value wines from the traditional varietals of the region. A modern and thoughtful producer they have farmed the lands here for over 60 years with a view to sustainable agriculture and protection of their traditional lands.

This is text-book stuff. Steel and concrete tank with no oak. Crisp and crunchy with a minerally hit on the nose reminiscent of white pepper and ground quartz. Easy fruit that is plush and forward with a fresh cut to the mid-weight flavours. Hard to beat at this price!

  2. Red Claw by Yabby Lake Pinot Gris 2018 375ml
Red Claw by Yabby Lake Pinot Gris 2018 375ml

Handpicked fruit was whole bunch pressed into tank. After cold settling overnight, juice was racked to another tank for fermentation. Parcels left on yeast lees until July 2016 to gain mouth feel and complexity, then bottled. This Red Claw Pinot Gris has lovely freshness, lifted floral aromas and bright fruit flavours. Showing a hint of nashi pear, subtle spice and a long, finely textured palate. YABBY LAKE

Very light yellow, bright colour, with a sweetly fragrant, light and grapy aroma, some nectarine, stone fruit notes. The wine is light-bodied and dry, delicate and straightforward, with a cleansing, appetising dryness to finish. It's very much a grigio style. The Real Review

  3. Farina Pinot Grigio 2020
    Farina Pinot Grigio 2020
Farina of Veneto was founded in the early 1900s with a passion and desire for producing the highest quality wines possible from the Veneto region. Cousins Claudio and Elena Farina; now 3 generations are responsible for continuity of the Farina tradition and focus on quality production.
Farina is located in San Pietro in the heart of the Valpolicella Classica; the historical and original Valpolicella. Claudio and Elena own 10 hectares of their own vineyards and source fruit from long standing grower partnerships which encompass a further 70 hectares under vine.

This opens with a nice little lift of ripe peach, apple, floral notes and a hint of flinty stone shimmering around the edges. The palate has some nice plump fruit with a streak of minerally freshness that runs through the middle. Its on the heavier side of light and the fact that it comes off a combination of volcanic, alluvial and calcareous soils lends it a lot of complexity especially for a wine at this level. 100% steel tank means it remains beautifully vibrant. Lots of appeal here and very versatile.

  4. Soho Wine Co Peggy Sauvignon Blanc 2020
Soho Wine Co Peggy Sauvignon Blanc 2020
Fabulously fruited and brightly expressed with feijoa, Granny Smith apple, lemon/lime zest and floral aromas on the nose, followed by a flavoursome palate delivering excellent fruit intensity and juicy acidity. SAM KIM, Wine Orbit

This is part of the entry level range from the highly regarded Soho wines. A combination of Wairau & Awatere Valley's in the Marlborough this straddles a wonderful bridge between the tropical fruit bombs and more racy versions of sauvignon blanc we see in regions like the Adelaide Hills. It does it with style and grace too and doesn't leave any of that Marlborough goodness out but in a more focused and fine package.

  5. Insieme Pinot Grigio 2020
    Insieme Pinot Grigio 2020
The Bruni family works with farmers all over Italy for the Insieme label, producing wines which are delicious, top value, and varietally and regionally correct. This is not the first time we have featured their wines and it certainly won't be the last. They offer exceptional value but also that little something that you just can't quite put your finger on.

Raised without oak, this is a fruit driven expression, pushing against the neutrality of some of these styles.  Pear and green melon fruit, juicy and a crackling mineral undertone, beautifully textured and has some personality about it.

  6. Kris Wines Pinot Grigio 2020
    Kris Wines Pinot Grigio 2020
From one of the masters of North Eastern Italy, Franz Haas, comes the ‘Kris’ Pinot Grigio. This is their ‘entry’ level Grigio but absolutely over delivers as a bang-for-your-buck drop.

White peach and crunchy tree fruits to the fore with a gently spiced, quartz/mineral nose. The palate is clean as a whistle with a core of sweet white fruits cut with bright, zippy acidity. At the same time the palate is generous with a lovely textural element that gives it nice weight and punch while always remaining bright and fresh. Another fantastic effort!

  7. Babo Pinot Grigio 2020
    Babo Pinot Grigio 2020
Babo's Pinot Grigio is sourced from this region--specifically from a 30-year-old site in San Martino al Tagliamento, near Pordenone. The vineyard sits at the base of the Alps and the soils are a mix of clay and alpine gravel from alluvial deposits. De-stemmed, crushed, steel tank, some skin contact and on lees for 20 weeks prior to bottling.

Fleshy, soft with a little grip and texture.

  8. Quealy Balnarring Pinot Grigio 2021
    Quealy Balnarring Pinot Grigio 2021
Quealy's benchmark Pinot Grigio is a blend of two vineyards in Balnarring this year: Hester vineyard and the Campbell and Christine. The fruit was whole-bunch pressed - only the most delicate portion of the press cycle is accepted - and left to settle overnight without sulphur. Twenty per cent went into Francois Frères puncheons for just four weeks (to soften the barrels for the Pinot) before being blended back with the stainless-steel component.

Straddles the Grigo/Gris divide nicely with a little slip and grip on the palate. Tree fruits and soft spice. Very slurpable.

  9. Bilancia Pinot Gris 2020
    Bilancia Pinot Gris 2020
Pear and lifted floral aromatics and a full, ripe, lush palate. This is how Pinot Gris should be.
2020 was a spectacular vintage for Hawke’s Bay and this Pinot Gris fruit was harvested in brilliant condition. Pressed and cold settled before racking and transfer to very old barriques for a coolish, slow fermentation. Slow fermentation assists in the retention of the often-subtle varietal fruit characters of Pinot Gris. The barrel fermentation is not meant to add oak character to the wine but rather, assist in texture. Texture is a very important feature in Pinot Gris.

Aromas of floral, fruit and musk coupled with a rich, textural and full palate, important characters for Pinot Gris, building from great fruit quality and attention to balance during winemaking. The wine is dry, the weight and flavour of the fruit carries the palate. WARREN GIBSON, winemaker

  10. L'Hortus VDP de Montferrand Bergerie Blanc 2020
L'Hortus VDP de Montferrand Bergerie Blanc 2020
    STAGE 15 - FLAT - RODEZ > CARCASSONNE 202.5KM

30% Roussanne, 20% Sauvignon Blanc, 20% Viognier, 10% Sauvignon Gris, 10% Chardonnay, 5% Petit Manseng, 5% Muscat petit grain

The Domaine de l’Hortus is in the heart of the AOC Pic Saint Loup Coteaux du Languedoc. The vineyard stretches in a deep valley between two mountains – the Pic Saint Loup and the Hortus.
Various independent small plots are implanted with vine in the middle of oak and pine trees forests on the slopes of both mountains.

The grapes were directly pressed, fermented in tanks and aged for four months giving this wine an amazing floral and charming nose, a very refreshing, crisp, dry white wine. Delicious & aromatic, with real texture and weight that holds in the wonderfully fragarnt fruit and top-notes. It reminds us of a field of wildflowers, with honey and zesty citrus flavours. Balanced, with freshness and volume.

  11. Franz Haas Pinot Grigio 2020
    Franz Haas Pinot Grigio 2020
Founded in 1880, the winery is now in the hands of Franz Haas VII who is the seventh generation. Based in Bolzano in Alto Adige, this wine is a beautiful mix of mountain spice and wet stones. From vines grown between 600-800m altitude on mostly clay and lime soils, it’s crisp with a little breadth thanks to some time in older barrels.

A classic example of modern pinot grigio from Northeastern Italy, but with more delicacy and freshness than many. I love the nose of mandarin orange and ripe melon, plus the long, juicy and silky finish. Screw cap. JAMES SUCKLING

  13. Jermann Pinot Grigio 2020
    Jermann Pinot Grigio 2020
Silvio Jermann was at the forefront of reinvigorating Italian wine in the 80s. Based in Gorizia in FVG, Jermann’s wines are renowned for their purity, depth and richness in minerality. A passionate man, Silvio says ‘I want the wines to be genuine. I want them to be balanced and elegant but above all, they should move us, prompt our emotions and have a sense of authenticity.' This demure expression of grigio is interwoven with spice, nuts and earth. Give it time to open up, it's tightly wound and utterly delicious.

A fresh pinot grigio, showing sliced pineapple and mango with some lemon and green-apple undertones. It’s medium-bodied with pretty fruit and a zingy finish. Screw cap. JAMES SUCKLING, jamessuckling.com
