  1. Red Claw by Yabby Lake Pinot Gris 2018 375ml
Red Claw by Yabby Lake Pinot Gris 2018 375ml

Handpicked fruit was whole bunch pressed into tank. After cold settling overnight, juice was racked to another tank for fermentation. Parcels left on yeast lees until July 2016 to gain mouth feel and complexity, then bottled. This Red Claw Pinot Gris has lovely freshness, lifted floral aromas and bright fruit flavours. Showing a hint of nashi pear, subtle spice and a long, finely textured palate. YABBY LAKE

Very light yellow, bright colour, with a sweetly fragrant, light and grapy aroma, some nectarine, stone fruit notes. The wine is light-bodied and dry, delicate and straightforward, with a cleansing, appetising dryness to finish. It's very much a grigio style. The Real Review

  2. Bilancia Pinot Gris 2019
    Bilancia Pinot Gris 2019

Pears and apples mingle with white flowers and a touch of peach. Lovely texture, dry and rich with a sense of glycerol to the overt flavours of bosc pear and red apples. It has Gris weight but also a nice, enlivening juicy feel to the fruit. Finishes with a good degree of crispness to what is otherwise a wine of texture above all. I think the winemaker said "This is how Pinot Gris should be." That's a fair statement, tastes like a textbook description of the variety when it's made well. ROSCOE

    Bilancia Pinot Gris 2020
Pear and lifted floral aromatics and a full, ripe, lush palate. This is how Pinot Gris should be.
2020 was a spectacular vintage for Hawke’s Bay and this Pinot Gris fruit was harvested in brilliant condition. Pressed and cold settled before racking and transfer to very old barriques for a coolish, slow fermentation. Slow fermentation assists in the retention of the often-subtle varietal fruit characters of Pinot Gris. The barrel fermentation is not meant to add oak character to the wine but rather, assist in texture. Texture is a very important feature in Pinot Gris.

Aromas of floral, fruit and musk coupled with a rich, textural and full palate, important characters for Pinot Gris, building from great fruit quality and attention to balance during winemaking. The wine is dry, the weight and flavour of the fruit carries the palate. WARREN GIBSON, winemaker

  4. Ocean Eight Pinot Gris 2019
    Ocean Eight Pinot Gris 2019
Long, lush, juicy and fresh with plenty of zip and verve. The oak only plays a supportive role adding texture, nuance and a touch of spice rather then any 'oaky' influence. There is a wonderful focus and line to the long palate which carries succulent stone fruits and snappy spice. Its textural and has lovely weight with pitch-perfect balance and buzzy energy to the lingering finish. No wonder people can’t get enough, because we can’t. MYLES, PWS

  5. Franz Haas Pinot Grigio 2020
    Franz Haas Pinot Grigio 2020
Founded in 1880, the winery is now in the hands of Franz Haas VII who is the seventh generation. Based in Bolzano in Alto Adige, this wine is a beautiful mix of mountain spice and wet stones. From vines grown between 600-800m altitude on mostly clay and lime soils, it’s crisp with a little breadth thanks to some time in older barrels.

A classic example of modern pinot grigio from Northeastern Italy, but with more delicacy and freshness than many. I love the nose of mandarin orange and ripe melon, plus the long, juicy and silky finish. Screw cap. JAMES SUCKLING

  6. Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Turckheim 2018
Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Turckheim 2018
Zind Humbrecht is one of the unquestioned kings of aromatic whites. His ceaseless drive to create the worlds greatest examples of his varieties is nothing short of remarkable as are the resulting offerings. A devoted proponent of Biodynamics, a gifted presenter and communicator and a towering figure of modern wine, the first Frenchman to be awarded the MW (International Master of Wine) he has justifiably earned his reputation as one of legends of modern wine.

The Tuckheim Range is the value tier and represents classic Alsace whites from a regional blend of grapes as well as estate fruit.

The nose presetns with ripe honeyed, slightly toasted aromatics. One could almost feel that this wine saw some fresh oak, but no, it spent 12 months in classic old foudres which lends a lovely textured elemtent to the wine. The palate is velvety, elegant, almost soft, yet finishing very dry. There is lovely aromatic presence and richness without feeling heavy or fat. Wonderfully balance and textbook example of Gris in the right hands. Extremely food friendly and drinkable right now! PWS

  8. Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Roche Calcaire 2017
Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Roche Calcaire 2017
Sourced, as always, from the Muschelkalk limestone soils of the coolish Clos Windsbuhl, the sample of the 2017 Alsace Pinot Gris Roche Calcaire starts pure and fresh on the very chalky and lemon-tinged nose, here with lovely sur lie notes. The attack on the palate is racy, pure and fresh, with bright and elegant fruit flavors. Intense and powerful on the finish, this is a very long and structured Pinot Gris that needs a lot of time. Linear style. Nice minerals and fine bitters from the sur lie aging. STEPHAN REINHARDT, The Wine Advocate

  9. Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Roche Calcaire 2018
Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Roche Calcaire 2018
A very succulent gewurz with tons of yellow fruit, as well as rose aromas, then some spice joins the picture as it aerates in the glass. At once very creamy, frankly off-dry yet very fresh on the palate, this is delightful now. Drink now, either by itself or with mature cheese. STUART PIGOTT

Flint, smoke, chalk and cream all appear in brief flashes on the nose of this wine. The palate still holds some residual carbon dioxide but then slowly reveals serene and ripe but bright pear fruit at its core. Freshness takes its cue from a pithy texture and lends shape to this bold but fresh, bone-dry wine. WINE ENTHUSIAST

This wine is mostly the second wine of Pinot-Gris from the Clos Windsbuhl. Sometimes, small volumes of other single vineyards (Heimbourg and Clos Jebsal) can be used in addition, depending on vineyard selection we are doing. The old vines of Pinot-Gris in the Windsbuhl were planted in the 1960s or earlier. When we acquired the Clos in 1987, some vines needed to be pulled out (wrong grape or rootstock) and were replaced partly with some Pinot-Gris between 1988 and 1992. These 'younger' vines are not used in the Clos Windsbuhl and all go into this cuvée. However, the vineyard signature is well present: good acidity, elegant racy palate…. but also a tendency to keep residual sweetness if the ripeness goes just slightly too high. It is therefore very important to pick at the right moment, and Pinot-Gris can evolve very quickly, which was done perfectly in 2018. The wine was able to ferment dry from very healthy grapes.

Clear yellow colour. There is an immediate sense of ripe white fruits (peach, pears) and citrus aromas on the nose, with an almost 'Riesling like' character. The palate is refined, elegant and the dry finish adds to the complexity of the wine. Good length, medium power, so drinkable! It really is a very convincing Pinot-Gris and a style we would like to achieve exactly like this every year! ZIND HUMBRECHT

  10. Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Roche Volcanic 2018
Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Roche Volcanic 2018

When my father Leonard Humbrecht acquired the Clos-Saint-Urbain in 1977, only half was actually planted. For about 10 years, we worked hard to cut the shrubs, rebuilt walls and paths in order to be able to plant vines. These vines have today acquired a venerable age (35 years average) but some vintages we do prefer to vinify them separately and do not classify them as Grand Cru. Most of the time, if it isn't a ripeness difference (dry/sweet potential) it is a difference in yield. I am the first to admit that in 2018, the difference is very small! The vines behaved very well in 2018. Surely, the roots were able to reach the richer deeper layers in the volcanic rock, ensuring a better supply of water during the very dry and hot summer. The fermentation was slightly slower than usual and the wine kept a small amount of sweetness.

Classic Rangen rich yellow colour The nose boasts smoky aromas, flint, crushed rocks…. It also announces a long and powerful palate. There is a clear influence of the vineyard in this wine. The finish is bold, intense, long, showing a complex salivating acidity. There is lots of energy in this wine and lots of ageing potential! ZIND HUMBRECHT

Bottling date: 1/2020; Alcohol: 13.2° alc; Residual sweetness: 11 g/l; Total Acidity 2.7 g/l H2SO4 (4 g/l Tar), pH: 3.5; Yields: 45 hl/ha; Optimum drinking period: 2022-2030; Average age of the vines: 35 years; Terroir: Sedimentary volcanic rocks, facing South, very steep slope. Indice 2.

  11. Jermann Pinot Grigio 2020
    Jermann Pinot Grigio 2020
Silvio Jermann was at the forefront of reinvigorating Italian wine in the 80s. Based in Gorizia in FVG, Jermann’s wines are renowned for their purity, depth and richness in minerality. A passionate man, Silvio says ‘I want the wines to be genuine. I want them to be balanced and elegant but above all, they should move us, prompt our emotions and have a sense of authenticity.' This demure expression of grigio is interwoven with spice, nuts and earth. Give it time to open up, it's tightly wound and utterly delicious.

A fresh pinot grigio, showing sliced pineapple and mango with some lemon and green-apple undertones. It’s medium-bodied with pretty fruit and a zingy finish. Screw cap. JAMES SUCKLING, jamessuckling.com

  12. La Castellada Pinot Grigio 2012
    La Castellada Pinot Grigio 2012
100% Pinot Grigio from 26 year-old North-east facing vines planted in limestone and marl Ponca 180 metres above sea level. Hand harvested in September, destemmed and left on skins in Slavonian oak for 15 days. Spontaneous ferment then aged for 2 years in large Slavonian oak and a further year in stainless steel. Bottled without filtration and aged for a further year in bottle prior to release,13.5%. The unique microclimate of the site  makes it possible to take a natural approach in the vineyard, with the ventilation provided by the Adriatic and Alpine winds protecting from disease. Treatments of copper and sulfur are used only when necessary to protect against downy and powdery mildew, vineyards are fully grassed in order to protect biodiversity and retain moisture, yields are low in order to achieve perfect ripeness.
