  2. Domaine de Triennes Rose 2020 375ml
Domaine de Triennes Rose 2020 375ml
A winery with great pedigree, Triennes is a joint venture between Jacques Seysses of Domaine Dujac and Aubert de Villaine from Domaine de la Romanee-Conti and is located in the Var, to the East of Aix en Provence.

Farmed organically since 2008, the aim of the estate is to produce wines that speak clearly of the bright sky and diverse terroirs of the region. Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Cinsault, Merlot, Grenache and Viognier provide the raw materials for their stunning range of wines from their pale, savoury rose through to the characterful rich reds for which Provence has become famous.

We've said it before but year after year this is always such a lovely bottling. Hints of wild strawberry, a touch of red currant and fresh cut peach all jostle in an airy and fragrant nose. Not too heavy, not too light it has lovely plush fruit under-pinned by gentle acidity. It would be a chameleon on the table pairing with so many foods. PWS

  3. Rive Droite Rive Gauche Cotes du Rhone 2020
Rive Droite Rive Gauche Cotes du Rhone 2020
Rive Droite Rive Gauche simply means right bank, left bank and the name derives from fruit for the wine being sourced from both sides of the river - the grenache coming mainly from the left (gauche) and the Syrah from the village of Daumazan (on the rive droite), near Tavel. It is also a French film starring the rotund wine-nut actor Gerard Depardieu - fun fact!

This is a lovely fresh and crunchy styled Rhone from our friends at Rive Droite. There is touch of thyme and bay over red spiced fruits, layered with a little bit of red liquorice. This is a medium bodied rendition with a pure core of raspberry, wild strawberry and splash of black berry fruit in the mix. Its lithe with a lovely fresh cut to the sweet fruits that makes this look wonderfully elegant and damn easy to like.

    The Wizardry Grenache Rouge 2019

Steve Webber is a man of many talents and passions. One of his is Grenache from upper Heathcote. He loves it so much he has established a brand around promoting the variety in the region. This is the 3rd vintage and of the wines and we are thoroughly convinced, not just because Steve stands behind, but because the wine is that good. The future is bright and so is this wine. PWS

This red delight reflects the name with definitely some magic in its makeup, dark cherry aromatics to start, with ripe but not jammy flavours as you sip in medium to fuller-bodied juicy fruits offsetting a fine, sandy tannin feel. There’s a lot going on for the price – look out for specials and keep an eye on it as the styling unfolds over the next few years. HALLIDAY MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER 2020

  5. Isaac Fernandez Acentor Garnacha 2016
    Isaac Fernandez Acentor Garnacha 2016
Isaac Fernández Selección is a unique collaborative venture between two individuals - Isaac Fernández Montaña one of Spain's most acclaimed winemakers and Aurelio Cabestrero. Working with old vine fruit and from some of the oldest DO's in Spain they are bringing together a wealth of experience. It's a shame this is the only wine coming into the country because it is a belter!

Dark violet with spicey accented cherry and dark berry aromas. There is a touch of cola and vanilla  that sits nicely against the fresh dark fruit. Tons of energy and it seems to sizzle along in the mouth, offering sweet red and blue fruit and spicecake flavors. There is a bit of tannic grip and that touch of wild herbs that leads into a smokey finish where the tannins melt back into the sweet fruits. This is a great example of what a bit of thought and effort can bring to a wine that overdelivers in spades!

  6. Chaffey Bros Not Your Grandma Rose 2021
Chaffey Bros Not Your Grandma Rose 2021

The remaining 10% is an aromatic blend of Riesling, Gewürtztraminer, Kerner which give it such a wonderfully spice accented top note that works so well with the strawberry, musk and turkish delight aromas. Crisp with zippy acid that penetrated the juicy red berry and strawberry falvours beautifully with mourvèdre adding a litte grip and lingering spice. Only 11.5% alcohol too with plenty of flavour under the bonnet.

  7. Yalumba Bush Vine Grenache 2019
    Yalumba Bush Vine Grenache 2019
The estate's efforts across the respective grenache cuvees are almost as venerable as those across the very fine expressions of viognier. This, a thirst-slaking red, is worth celebrating for its youthful primary fruit: cranberry, cumquat and cherry bonbon. Yet, most impressive are the saline, slaty tannins that been massaged into the fray with aplomb, helping to imbue poise while curtailing the ripeness of fruit. NED GOODWIN MW, James Halliday's Wine Companion

Sourced from very old bush vines (some dating back to 1929) which add both depth of fruit and phenolic impact, lending the wine some subtle gravitas. Lovely, so primary it's almost juicy, lifted with elements of spice that slides in to grilled meats. Beautifully textured, vibrant and inviting. Lovely, did I say that already? There is structure and heft here too but it only adds to the overall sensuality of the wine. We all tasted this and asked how much. When we heard the price we jumped on it. Yalumba are masters at the craft and this is ludicrously good for the money. The ideal mid-week wine with so much going for it that it embarrasses a lot of other wines in a similar price range. 8. Chaffey Bros La Conquista Tempranillo Grenache Graciano 2017
Chaffey Bros La Conquista Tempranillo Grenache Graciano 2017

The Chaffey boys don't own any fruit and this thoroughly works to their advantage. Being able to source the best old vine material and best plots gives them an edge over mother nature while allowing access to some awesome fruit. This is usually a blend of 65% Barossa tempranillo, 25% old vine Barossa grenache, and 10% graciano from Eden Valley.

Lifted and bright this about pure drinking pleasure. A bit of licorice and spice with punchy fruit and pepper to the fore. Mid-weight in style with everything in its place. Perfect Wed night wine. PWS

  9. Bondar Rose 2021
    Bondar Rose 2021
"There must be a bit of magic behind Bondar. All of the wines have an ethereal quality" JANE FAULKNER, Halliday Wine Companion

We couldn't agree more. There does seem to be a little bit of magic going on behind the scenes here. Certainly great vineyards play their part here but a lot has to be said for what Andre Bondar is doing with the wines. Chat with him and he always reveals a beautfiully considered and throughful approach to wine making that shines through.

Haliday called the 2021 one of Australia's finest rose and we reckon the 2021 is just as good. 100% grenache, this is a bright, delicate and aromatic rose that presents with a pale colour but lacks nothing on flavour or palate impact. Wild strawberry and red current fruit are flecked with Provencal herbs and an light orange rind twist. Its lithe and lifted but with plenty of succulent fruit. This is a wonderful rose that you will not be able to put down.

  10. Bondar Rose 2020
    Bondar Rose 2020
A blend of 95% Grenache and 5% Cinsault, sourced from four sites with a range of soil types--from the white sands of Blewitt Springs to the cracking, black clays of Whites Valley. Fruit from all four blocks was hand-picked, then crushed and left to sit on skins for varying amounts of time (three, six and twelve hours).

Two parcels of Grenache were fermented cooler, while a smaller parcel of the Estate Grenache and Cinsault were fermented warmer in old oak, providing a 'funky' blending fraction that brings food-friendly grip and texture. A pale, fleshy and deliciously red fruited rosé from a producer that can do no wrong. Perfect balance and some lovely complexity make this an exceptional buy.

This is one of our favourite Rose's the last couple of years and Bondar seem to just produce hit after hit. This is so dangerously drinkable - you have been warned! PWS

  11. Legado del Moncayo Garnacha 2019
    Legado del Moncayo Garnacha 2019

Isaac Fernandez works in a number of regions and with several varieties, but his standout wines come from the old Garnacha bush-vines grown in the highest, rockiest, iron-laden soils of DO Campo de Borja. Isaac is nephew of Mariano Garcia, famous as head winemaker at Vega Sicilia in the late 20th century. Mariano is patron of the Mauro wine group which he founded after leaving Vega. Isaac commenced his career with Mariano, working 20 years at Mauro before stretching his wings as a consultant from 2005 (in conjunction with a US importer, Aurelio Cabestrero). Multiple partnerships and consultancies have come (and gone).

Chateau du Rouet Cuvee Reserve Cotes de Provence Rose 2019 375ml

The Château du Rouët is situated, at the foot of the red rock mountains, nearby the Roman town of Fréjus. Once a Templière farm, the Château is now settled at the foot of the Rouët mountain range, a volcanic bar of red ochre, at an altitude of 560 metres with five generations of rich history inter-twined though this impressive estate.

The vines, set between the Gorges de Pennafort and The Gorges du Blavet, are spread out over 70 hectares of preserved area, classed as Natura 2000. Oriented towards the South and they benefit from the Mistral as well as the breeze from the seaside which maintain freshness and acidity from the otherwise warm Mediterranean climate.

Around 60% Grenache with 30% Cinsault and a touch of the traditional Tibourenc grape the harvests are done at night to maintain freshness and the light maceration’s performed in temperature controlled tanks to help maintain a wonderful lift to the wines. PWS

Brilliant onion skin color. Fresh red berry and tangerine aromas show good clarity and pick up a subtle floral nuance with air. Juicy and silky in texture, offering subtly sweet strawberry and citrus fruit flavors and a hint of honeysuckle. Finishes smooth and well-focused, leaving a hint of candied orange zest behind. 16. Clos des Fées 'Modeste' Rouge 2017
Clos des Fées 'Modeste' Rouge 2017
Clos des Fées is relatively new in the wine world, beginning in 1998, when Herve and Claudine settled in Vingrau, on the high cool slopes of the northern edge of Roussillon. Buying up old and often abandoned vineyards from these high slopes, Herve has gradually amassed dozens of tiny plots, of which many are magnificent mature vineyards spread throughout these cooler slopes.
Hand harvested, tiny yields of perfectly ripe fruit using minimal SO2 during the winemaking process resulting in wines show remarkable finesse and freshness. PWS

  17. Aphelion Welkin Grenache 2020
    Aphelion Welkin Grenache 2020

Welkin is an Old English term which means ‘Vault of the Sky.’ Well, I’m old, and English, so it makes sense. It does, however, sound like an Old English term for something quite different. Tasted alongside the Aphelion Confluence 2019, and I like this here Welkin more. And as an aside, I once spent a night in Devon where I wandered into a barn, and all the locals were drinking scrumpy direct from barrel. The dialect was something else, and I remember it well, though I don’t quite remember the walk back to my B&B. Or mebbe I were jis welkin funny.

Raspberry frog, spiced strawberries, something like iron filings to smell, and a pumice stone texture as it continues. It’s fresh, lively, has grip and interest, and finishes chalky and pretty long, with a sort of rosy and cool minty perfume as it goes. Lovely drink. Excellent. GARY WALSH

Sherrah Red et al Grenache, Shiraz, Nero D'Avola 2019

This was a delight and utterly delicious surprise. The funny thing was, that this wine was bought in by accident but we loved it so much we just had to have some. These are small batch, Mclaren Vale wines with a focus on freshness with Alex Sherrah heading the charge. We love what he is doing and know you will too.

Lifted with peppery, sweet spice and bright fruit that is a mash-up of raspberry, black currant and blackberry all fused together. Forward and fleshy with lovely focus and full of energy. The palate is long and easy to enjoy with the blend providing plenty of interest and something a little different to the usual GSM coming out of the region. Top stuff!

  19. Cepa X Cepa Garnacha 2018
    Cepa X Cepa Garnacha 2018
This is a real treasure in the Nekeas Valley. Dwarf oak trees in the upper regions of the valley concealed small areas of Garnacha vineyards over 60 years old. The age of the vines are a result of years and years of selection based on the experience of wine growers who knew nothing about DNA, but knew what type of grape that ripened well in this extreme climate of the region, sometimes very harsh, so they decided to do the same thing that they had done before. They selected the vines that faired best of the years - "Cepa por Cepa" literally means "Vine by vine" and this is they worked.

They have essentially rescued an invaluable genetic gem that could otherwise have been lost forever and the result is a succulent and vibrant wine. We are thoroughly impressed!

  20. SERRA i BARCELO 'Aucala' Garnacha Tinto 2018
SERRA i BARCELO 'Aucala' Garnacha Tinto 2018

Josep Serra is (4th generation) winemaker of the Serra-Barcelo family property in Montsant. The family comes from Ribera del Ebre (in Catalan, this is the Ebro River valley between Montsant and Terra Alta). As well as Garnatxa Tinto in DO Montsant, Josep makes Garnatxa Blanca and Tinto in neighbouring DO Terra Alta.

There is a thorough selection process at picking and a second manual selection in the bodega, after which the fruit is gently de-stemmed by hand. The wines are aged in low toast 400 litre French oak for 16 months or so, having previously been fermented in the same wood: the barrels are stood on one end, with the head removed to allow an open top for plunging. Once the fermentation is complete, the barrel head is closed. The wines undergo a slow malolactic conversion during 4 months in barrel, and then age on lees. After egg white fining, the wines are free-run-decanted unfiltered to bottle during an appropriate moon phase in January.

30-50yo Garnatxa Negre, with 11% Caranyena, fermented in 8,000 litre inox, with pumpovers and foot pressing. 20% ages 5 months in old 400 litre French oak, but most is matured on lees in stainless steel.

Fine and fresh (that lean chalk soil), it leads with red apple and poppy flower, then a touch of darker interest sneaks out below. Based on delicate rosehip red tea, it's simple, neatly formed, easy and lovely. The tannins are chalky, there's a twist of briar in the jolting pomegranate acidity, a delightful lack of glyceric sweetness, replaced by punch, tang, jolt and run. Great, uncomplicated fun. PWS

  21. Sierra de Tolon Tempranillo 2018
    Sierra de Tolon Tempranillo 2018
Sierra de Tolono is a member of an exciting but small cadre of new Rioja producers who are driving towards fresher, more terroir focused wines that place their emphasis on the vineyards rather than on the length of time any particular wine spends in a barrel. Run and owned by the indomitable Sandra Bravo, Sierra de Tolono produces incredibly elegant wines from old plots dotted around the cold, high altitude lands around the town of Rivas de Tereso, in Rioja Alavesa.

This is her entry level wine and his deliberately made in a forward and fleshy style but still has so much character. Red and black fruits play with soft spice and earthy peppercorn lift. On the palate there's a gently dusty tannin framing that sit over a mineral core giving the fruit a cool and slinky feel.
