  1. Gunderloch Fritz Riesling 2020
    Gunderloch Fritz Riesling 2020

How do they do it? This has been a PWS favourite for some time now and it never fails to deliver. Made by Rheinhessen legends Gunderloch with vineyards  close to the Rhines south-east steep slopes. The combination of the red slate soil, the proximity to the river, the exposure to the sun and the steepness of the vineyards - are perfect for producing wonderful ripeness. If you are a German riesling fan it would be hard to beat this for the sheer quality and insane value it represents.

The wine shows lovely stone fruit, peach and pithy characters as it opens in the glass. There is a salty mineral hit to that is really lovely. The fresh natural acidity zip through the ripe and spice flecked palate while a little aromatic lift gives this some real interest. Dry, fresh and full of character. PWS

  2. Clos Clare Riesling 2019 375ml
    Clos Clare Riesling 2019 375ml

Owned arnd run by the Barry family (Jim Barrty Wines) the clos Clare patch is located within the famous Florita vineyard in Watervale and is getting on for 50 years of age. The clos Clare Riesling is often among the very best in the region amd access to their absolutely stonking older releases, which they hold back in cellar, is proof of that pedigree. PWS

This is archetypal. Quintessential. Classic. A taut thread of lime juice, grapefruit and candied lemon zest woven by a spindle of pumice, slate and bright acidity. Transparent. A flowing stream of flavour. Inimitably Clare. This will fill out with bottle age. NED GOODWIN, James Halliday

  3. Rieslingfreak No. 3 Clare Dry Riesling 2021
Rieslingfreak No. 3 Clare Dry Riesling 2021

Fruit from the family vineyard in White Hutt, Clare Valley. The vines are planted into heavy red clay soils. Saffron and turmeric lace the aromatics, straying into the pink peppercorn and aniseed space. On the palate the wine is rich and intense, a very different shape to its peers, and all the better for it – its identity is clear and pronounced. Salted lemon, lime, crunchy green apple and white peach, too. Super-pleasurable and multi-dimensional. Astounding price. ERIN LARKIN, James Halliday

  4. Riversdale Estate Riesling 2019
    Riversdale Estate Riesling 2019
Riversdale Estate is located in the basin of the Coal River Valley, in Southern Tasmania. The Coal River Valley is the second largest wine region in Tasmania and continues to grow each year as a result of the unique growing climates located in the Valley. Riversdale is located in the basin of the valley and is the only vineyard to front Pittwater which gives temperature advantages during the winter and summer months.

Due to the climate advantages it is able to produce 9 different varieties with a reputation for Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Riesling. Riversdale Estate was purchased in 1980 by Ian Roberts for Angora goat purposes. The first vines were planted in 1991 and are some of the oldest in the region. PWS

The first thing you notice is the intense burst of cooked apple-like flavour, its tang intact, its flavours singing. The second is the texture, which is a step up on most young rieslings. This is a floral, spicy wine with excellent fruit concentration, but with more than a little character to boot. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, James Halliday

  5. Knight's Granite Hills 1971 Block Riesling 2018
    Knight's Granite Hills 1971 Block Riesling 2018

Granite Hills is one of the enduring classics, having pioneered the successful growing of riesling and shiraz in an uncompromisingly cool climate. The vineyard includes riesling, chardonnay, shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot and pinot noir (the last also used in its sparkling wine). The Rieslings age superbly, and the Shiraz was the forerunner of the cool-climate school in Australia. JAMES HALLIDAY

From the original riesling vines planted in '71. Delicate lemony scents lead to a textural, well weighted riesling with an above-average sense of presence. Its quality is built on mouthfeel, weight of fruit and flow. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, James Halliday

  6. Hutton Vale Farm Eden Valley Riesling 2017
Hutton Vale Farm Eden Valley Riesling 2017
If you ever want to show someone just how glorious the riesling grape can be, serve them a glass of this. It’s agenda-free riesling, fundamentally delicious, intense with flavour but not cutting, gorgeous at every turn, cellarworthy if you so desire, but in no way is patience a prerequisite. Lime, orange blossom, a gently candied aspect, a slip of pure lemon. It’s bold and it’s beautiful. (95) JAMES HALLIDAY

  7. Trimbach Reserve Riesling 2018 375ml
    Trimbach Reserve Riesling 2018 375ml
Trimbach is at the summit of dry white winemaking. CLIVE COATEDS M.W.

With viticultural origins going back to 1626 this family owned estate produces some of the finest wines not only of Alsace, but indeed the entire world of wine. Around the villages of Ribeauvillé and Hunawihr, the Trimbach family owns 57 hectares of vineyards from some of the most famed sites in the region.

The reserve wines are sourced from rigorously selected grapes grown in and around Ribeauville and surrounding villages. They are fermented dry and text book example of classic Alsace fair.

Quince, pear and apple with a touch of mandarin open to an exotic and layered nose. There is a touch of lime zest and white pepper folded into the soft fruits. The clean pristine fruit is sliced down the middle of the palate with a racy, tight quartz-mineral core. On the close the palate shifts toward more tropical notes and a sense of opulence that is kept in check by a dry and mineral finish. PWS

  8. Swinney Riesling 2021
    Swinney Riesling 2021

A whole bunch pressed riesling with time on lees. It’s from the excellent Powderbark vineyard of Swinney. When I see the name Swinney a Victorian era detective comes to mind.

Pretty perfume of jasmine, lemon-lime Splice ice blocks, lemon sorbet, almond, fresh milk, struck flint. Lovely start. Soft in the palate but with a very, very racy core of limey, zesty acidity, so very refreshing in feel with tension and precision on hand. It belts through the palate, a whip crack of zingy tang and sorbet-like mouth-watering pucker. Great regional character, good detail, bright and oh so vibrant. Acid hounds line up!
