  1. Pierre Peters Cuvee de Reserve Brut NV
Pierre Peters Cuvee de Reserve Brut NV

Rodolphe Péters took over the reins of this venerable estate in the southern Côte des Blancs in 2008, becoming the fourth generation to lead since the estate was founded in 1919. Today, the estate is over 18 hectares of vineyards, with a majority of the vineyards in the grand cru of Les Mesnil-sur-Oger.

Rodolphe's wines have cult status around the world and his skills as chef de cave have few equals. The subtle, sleek and elegant wines are marked by their fine acidity and prominent minerality, yet never come off as austere or thin, they are vibrant, alive, and perfectly balanced. PWS

A precise, crystalline wine, the NV Brut Cuvée de Réserve is the perfect wine with which to explore the Péters Champagnes. Lemon peel white, flowers and slate are super-expressive throughout in a Champagne that impresses with its finely-sculpted personality and energy. The Cuvée de Réserve is quite powerful, but never heavy. Slightly tropical overtones add the final shades of nuance. The Cuvée de Réserve draws on fruit sources outside Mesnil. It remains one of the best values in artisan Champagne. ANTONIO GALLONI

  2. Enrique Mendoza Las Quebradas Monastrell 2016
Enrique Mendoza Las Quebradas Monastrell 2016
The 2016 Las Quebradas was cropped from a very different yearn than the 2017, and the two vintages compared together show very different profiles, which was also the case with the other single-vineyard Monastrell, Estrecho. It fermented in a combination of square oak vats and open-top barriques in a kind of infusion, avoiding too much extraction, and it matured in French oak barrels. There is a little more rusticity in the 2016s, and even the oak seems a little more evident here. There is a little more tannin and concentration, but the wines are not aggressive —here is power with control. The vinification has been fine-tuned in the last few years; it's a lot softer and respects the character of the grape, vintage and soil more. LUIS GUTIERREZ

  3. Yann Chave Crozes Hermitage Le Rouvre 2017
Yann Chave Crozes Hermitage Le Rouvre 2017
Bright purple. Expansive aromas of fresh black raspberry, cassis, olive, incense and violet, along with an exotic spicy topnote. Juicy and focused on the palate, displaying superb clarity to the sappy dark fruit preserve, floral pastille and spicecake flavors. Definitely powerful, yet there's real liveliness and even a somewhat light touch here as well. Finishes impressively long and sweet, delivering powerful mineral thrust, a cracked pepper flourish and mounting tannins. It wouldn't surprise me to see this 2017 turn out to be the most impressive rendition of this consistently outstanding bottling Chave has ever made. JOSH RAYNOLDS

  4. SC Pannell Koomilya DC Block Shiraz 2018
SC Pannell Koomilya DC Block Shiraz 2018
Vines planted 46 years ago, 22% whole bunch, raised in second and third fill puncheons. The vineyard is a great place to visit, has a sort of 'secret garden' feel about it, but don't mind me. They're also doing good things with native bushland regeneration, and carbon capture.
Liquorice, the sort of brittle dark toffee my Mum used to make, blackberry and blackcurrant, sea spray and oyster shells, biscuit spices, and thyme. It's full of juicy and fresh small dark berried flavour, ferrous and deep, layers of pumice stone tannin, and for all the darkness, it's still so light on its feet. Finish is very long, with a spiced poached strawberry and rhubarb thing happening, and lavish stony tannin. Wonderful. GARY WALSH, Wine Front

SC Pannell Koomilya GT Block Shiraz 2018
Spice, rose, lychee juiciness sitting over chocolate, iodine, dried herbs and red and black fruits. It's stony and thick in tannin, roast meat, sun-dried tomato, black olives, a bold volume of dark berries, but savoury and distinctly umami in flavour. Tannin rolls on the finish, with a tacky and tactile feel, and the length is top notch. Acidity is bright too, and almost juicy. Fascinating wine. Distinctive. GARY WALSH, Wine Front

  6. Francois Chidaine Les Choisilles Montlouis 2019
Francois Chidaine Les Choisilles Montlouis 2019

Les Choisilles is named after a type of black flint of the same name, abundant in the old vine parcels that gift this wine where the bedrock is tuffeau. The vines range in age between 30 to 90 years. This is a wonderfully racy, mineral dry Chenin of intensity and drive.

Chidaine's 2019 Montlouis sur Loire Les Choisilles is deep, pure, fresh and refined on the nose but still very young, with lemon leaf, chalk and sur lie aromas. On the palate, this is a rich and concentrated Chenin, but it reveals remarkable freshness and energy. It is a bit unfair to compare it to the 2018, which has a year more of development, but I have to, and I am still amused by the 2019, which lifts Les Choisilles to unknown heights. The salinity and mineral grip are really beautiful here in the finish, and I believe the wine can age for two decades. Highly attractive pineapple flavors on the aftertaste. 7. Francois Chidaine Clos Habert 2019
    Francois Chidaine Clos Habert 2019
This Domaine has a number of cuvées that often fall into what would traditionally be called demi-sec territory. However, Chidaine prefers to call these wines tendre, or 'gently dry'. This three-hectare clos sits just above the Clos de Breuil, on a plateau where the silex (flint) gives way to broken chalk and clay.
From a soil composed of clay and coarse flint elements covering the subsoil made up of tuff, the 2019 Montlouis sur Loire Clos Habert opens with a very fine and delicate bouquet of finely concentrated yellow-fleshed fruit aromas along with herbal and flinty notes. Round and intense, with perfectly ripe fruit, fine tannins and delicate acidity, this is a sustainably intense and salty Chenin that is far too young to be served today but will age for some decades. 8. Wagner Stempel Hollberg GG Riesling 2020
Wagner Stempel Hollberg GG Riesling 2020
What a stunning nose of ripe white and yellow peach, pineapple and grapefruit with a slew of spicy and herbal notes! But that barely prepares you for the breathtaking interplay of super-mineral acidity and the spectacular fruit. All of this is underlined by wonderful salinity that makes this riesling GG almost supernaturally refreshing. So uplifting at the precise and vibrant finish! From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. 97 points JAMES SUCKLING, jamessuckling.com

  9. Lacourte Godbillon Terroirs d’Ecueil Brut NV
Lacourte Godbillon Terroirs d’Ecueil Brut NV
The NV Premier Cru Extra Brut Mi-Pentes is a selection of parcels that are located on the mid-slopes around the village of Écueil. It's pure Pinot Noir that is mostly (70%) from the 2014 vintage, complemented by 30% from the 2013 vintage, and 20% of the cuvée was fermented in oak. The wine offers a pure and fruity yet still lean and rather reductive bouquet. On the palate, this is a very fresh, pure, mineral and tensioned Pinot Noir with good grip and lingering salinity and structure. Still very young, this should benefit from further bottle aging. Disgorged in July 2017 with three grams of dosage. Tight and fresh, it still needs some time. Tasted in April 2018. STEPHAN REINHARDT, The Wine Advocate

Pierre Peters Cuvee Rose for Albane NV
The NV Brut Rosé For Albanne is gracious, weightless and airy, with expressive scents of crushed flowers, sweet tobacco, mint and cranberry. Pale in color and delicate, the NV Brut Rosé For Albanne is all about understatement. The brisk, refreshing finish only adds to the wine's considerable near and medium term appeal. The current release is 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Meunier. ANTONIO GALLONI

  11. Giaconda Estate Vineyard Shiraz 2018
    Giaconda Estate Vineyard Shiraz 2018
Exceptionally complex, dark and brooding. Smoked meats, gun flint, briary undergrowth and dark fruits are complimented by elegant floral notes. The utterly beguiling aroma is matched by a round and textural palate which is packed with wild berry fruits. Savoury tannins build on a long, spicy and complete mouthful of flavours [En Primeur barrel tasting notes]. RICK KINZBRUNNER

    Giaconda Pinot Noir 2019
Crimson in hue. A multifaceted bouquet of red fruits; raspberries, cherries and strawberries then roasted beets tied together by cola, briar and undergrowth notes. Lithe, fresh and long on the palate, the spicy oak combines with the red fruits to give a fine structure that augments elegant fruit and stem tannins. This wine is destined for the long haul, it doesn’t want to be rushed. Time served ageing this wine in bottle will ensure a glorious outcome and patience will be well rewarded. RICK KINZBRUNNER

  13. Radikon Ribolla 2013 500ml
    Radikon Ribolla 2013 500ml

In some ways this is the wine that got Stanko Radikon inspired to change his ways. Indigenous to the area and at the time not widely planted it has a unique profile with golden colour (in a conventional bottling and on the vine and often used in sweeter styles). PWS

    review for the 2011
Orangey brown but bright and golden at the core. You can still smell the golden yellow Ribolla fruit. Some tea and dried grasses but full of fruit. Spice and a touch of savoury mushroom. Umami too. Sour barley sugar. Nutty walnut. Orange and walnuts. Mouth-watering and just slightly sweaty on the finish. Incredibly long. Chewy, mineral and just intensely delicious and so fresh. So much fruit. Wild and gorgeous, powerful. JULIA HARDING, www.jancisrobinson.com

Andre Perret Saint Joseph Blanc 2018
Pale yellow. Sharply focused, mineral-accented aromas of Meyer lemon, pear and nectarine pick up a sexy floral overtone with air. Juicy, pure and penetrating on the palate, offering vibrant orchard, pit fruit flavors and subtle hints of tarragon and honeysuckle that emerge with aeration. In a distinctly bright, energetic style, showing excellent focus and strong, mineral-driven tenacity. JOSH RAYNOLDS, vinous.com

Enticing new leather, dark baking spice and violet aromas emerge in this taut red. Succulent and savory, it delivers juicy Marasca cherry, raspberry compote, flinty mineral and star anise flavors while firm, refined tannins and fresh acidity offer support. KERRIN O'KEEFE

A beautiful Barbaresco characterized by dried cherries but even blueberries, not to mention dried rose petals and hints of orange rind and cedar. Full body, deliciously chewy tannins, a long line of acidity and a medium to long finish. JAMES SUCKLING

    Billecart-Salmon Extra Brut NV
(45% Pinot Meunier, 40% Pinot Noir and 15% Chardonnay; zero dosage; L348232 16155): Pale gold. Aromas of dried pear, quince and white flowers, with a hint of exotic fruits emerging with air. In the mouth, sappy mango, pineapple and honeysuckle flavors are braced by a refreshing jolt of bitter quinine that lends a refreshingly dry edge. Closes steely and taut, with lingering mineral and citrus qualities. I like the blend of richness and nerviness here. JOSH RAYNOLDS vinous.com January 2015

  17. Louis Michel Chablis Montee de Tonnerre 2018 1er
Louis Michel Chablis Montee de Tonnerre 2018 1er
The 2018 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre is clean and precise on the nose, perhaps more in the vein of a traditional Chablis than, say, the Butteaux. The palate is fresh and lively with crisp acidity, impressive tension and a twist of sour lemon toward the finish that keeps this Chablis alert and alive. Excellent. NEAL MARTIN

The 2018 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru is the most elegant and precise of the premiers crus in this range. Silky, floral and refined, the 2018 possesses striking nuance and total class. Lemon confit, wild flowers, white pepper and saline notes add freshness. More than anything else, the Montée de Tonnerre impresses with its saline-infused tension and persistence. Even in this warm vintage, it retains terrific energy and cut. I loved it. ANTONIO GALLONI

  18. Guigal St Joseph Lieu dit Blanc 2017
Guigal St Joseph Lieu dit Blanc 2017
While Marcel Guigal says he loves to stick his Ex Voto white Hermitage in blind Burgundy tastings, you might also try that with this beauty. The 2017 Saint-Joseph Lieu-Dit Saint-Joseph Blanc is all barrel fermented (half in new and half in second use oak) and offers aromas of toasted almonds and hazelnuts. It has a broad, generous mouthfeel and ripe melon and pear flavors. Despite the richness and silky texture, it remains fresh and focused on the lengthy finish. JOE CZERWINSKI

St Joseph Lieu Dit St Joseph Blanc, this cuvée was first made in 2001 and comes from the namesake vineyard of the appellation. The lieu-dit St Joseph is located just south of the town of Tournon and consists primarily of a gorgeous, south-facing, granite hillside. This cuvée is always 100% Marsanne and up until 2013, was aged in 100% new French oak. Starting with the 2014 vintage, they’ve moved to aging the cuvée in equal parts new and once-used barrels, with the goal to make the cuvée slightly more approachable in its youth. Along with Chapoutier’s Les Granits Blanc, Gonon’s les Oliviers, Gripa’s Le Berceau Blanc and Coursodon’s le Paradis St Pierre Blanc, this is consistently one of the appellation's most impressive whites. Giaconda Estate Vineyard Shiraz 2019
Dark red to coal black in colour. Notes of damp forest floor combine with a zephyr of savoury meats and campfire smoke, with raspberry and star anise notes lifted by the whole-bunch component. Round and rich with a satisfying fruit-laden palate of wild berries coming to the fore. The tannins are powder-fine and convey red fruits with a twist of spiced vanilla oak, long on the palate. Evocative and immensely complex, this finishes with a strong mineral and graphite impact. A wine that is destined to have a long future. RICK KINZBRUNNER

Ten days on skins (same as Sivi) and 18 months in large Slovenian oak. Also part of the same "novice" series. The Friulano lifts the aromatic and lends the wine some racey acidity. Works a treat. PWS

    review for the 2016
Deep orange gold. More smoky but also a lovely orange and apricot fruit. Spice and chamomile. Dusty chalky mineral too. Firmer tannins than the Pinot Grigio but so juicy and fruity. Amazing length. Skin contact gives the length, it seems. Sour orange fruit on the finish, chewy but packed with fruit.  JULIA HARDING, www.jancisrobinson.com
