  1. Bilancia Pinot Gris 2019
    Bilancia Pinot Gris 2019

Pears and apples mingle with white flowers and a touch of peach. Lovely texture, dry and rich with a sense of glycerol to the overt flavours of bosc pear and red apples. It has Gris weight but also a nice, enlivening juicy feel to the fruit. Finishes with a good degree of crispness to what is otherwise a wine of texture above all. I think the winemaker said "This is how Pinot Gris should be." That's a fair statement, tastes like a textbook description of the variety when it's made well. ROSCOE

  2. Bilancia Pinot Gris 2020
    Bilancia Pinot Gris 2020
Pear and lifted floral aromatics and a full, ripe, lush palate. This is how Pinot Gris should be.
2020 was a spectacular vintage for Hawke’s Bay and this Pinot Gris fruit was harvested in brilliant condition. Pressed and cold settled before racking and transfer to very old barriques for a coolish, slow fermentation. Slow fermentation assists in the retention of the often-subtle varietal fruit characters of Pinot Gris. The barrel fermentation is not meant to add oak character to the wine but rather, assist in texture. Texture is a very important feature in Pinot Gris.

Aromas of floral, fruit and musk coupled with a rich, textural and full palate, important characters for Pinot Gris, building from great fruit quality and attention to balance during winemaking. The wine is dry, the weight and flavour of the fruit carries the palate. WARREN GIBSON, winemaker

  3. Bilancia Chardonnay 2017
    Bilancia Chardonnay 2017
There’s a very intense and juicy feel to this chardonnay that offers such fresh and refined pear and pastry on the nose, leading to similar flavors on the palate with gentle almond milk and a mellow, elegant feel to the finish. Laid-back goodness here. NICK STOCK, jamessuckling.com

The aromas of grilled white peaches and toasted brioche are enough to set off even jaded salivary glands, but Bilancia's 2017 Chardonnay boasts other charms as well. It's refreshingly medium-bodied, with hints of melon and lime, then finishes bone dry and ultra clean, with just a bit of lingering oak. It should drink well for 4-5 years. 4. Kumeu River Hunting Hill Chardonnay 2020
Kumeu River Hunting Hill Chardonnay 2020
Possibly the most complete Hunting Hill Chardonnay I've tasted in youth, the 2020 provides a harmonious, melt-in-your-mouth impression. It has breadth and concentration but retains a sense of  elegance on the midpalate before finishing with precision and length. Yes, there's a little bit of flint character too, but then Hunting Hill is known to be reductive; give it time. Like Forrest Gump, it runs through a finish line and keeps on going effortlessly. There's no box of chocolates here, though; it's all white nectarine, citrus, white flowers and a touch of smoked nuts.REBECCA GIBB, Vinous.com

  5. Bilancia Tiratore Chardonnay 2019
    Bilancia Tiratore Chardonnay 2019

A very composed and complex chardonnay with fresh peach and grapefruit, as well as almond and hazelnut. Complex and exuberant style. The palate has a very plush, fleshy and cooly composed style with ripe peach and pear and a spicy, nutty finish. Drink now. Screw cap. NICK STOCK, jamessuckling.com

A fine, bright pale green in the glass, with voluptuous aromas of peach, lemon blossom, roast cashew, pink grapefruit, and buttered toast. Ripe stone fruit and tropicals on the palate – pineapple, honeydew and quince balanced with a zest of kumquat, crisp nashi pear and nectarine.

Rich and intense, but with a drive of acidity that is pure linear energy. Complex, and develops beautifully on opening – I’d surely decant this. Plenty of vanilla oak influence – strudel, nougat and baking spices. A deliciously silky mouthfeel – unctuous yet with a stony minerality underneath. A floral, spiciness develops in the mile-long, sweetening finish. 97pts. Would rank among the best of any New Zealand wines. (97) DAVID WALKER BELL, www.winefolio.com

  6. Bilancia La Collina Syrah 2019
    Bilancia La Collina Syrah 2019
An exceptional La Collina release with such impressive depth and power, yet elegant and detailed, too. Aromas of black tea, red cherry and plum, pomegranate, cola nut, white pepper, clove and graphite. The palate is defined by long, tensile tannins and holds such pure fresh-fruit flavor in an intense, deep and focused finish. Power with elegance and purity here. Excellent syrah. Their finest release to date. Try from 2024. Screw cap NICK STOCK, www.jamessuckling.com
