JURA

The Jura is a world unto itself. It's a melting pot of curious whites and reds, many you've probably never heard about. A narrow valley wedged between Burgundy and Switzerland, this is countryside filled with limestone cliffs and hillocks upon which the best vines are planted. These wines are tangy, complex, pure and delicious.

Red or White?
Both. The whites provide a gamut of styles from the fresh and crisp Savagnin and chardonnays topped up (ouillé), to the oxidative, rich and nutty styles left purposely under-filled to encourage flor development. Minerality is a recurrent theme, threading the whites together. The reds can be a little paler in colour but don't be fooled as they carry a lot of flavour.

Grapes
Savagnin, Chardonnay,
Ploussard (or Poulsard), Trousseau, Pinot Noir

Styles
Most of the whites show saline and hazelnut tones,  and if they are developed under flor there are richer yeasty and oyster shell flavours. As for the mountain reds, there is a cooler tannin profile and a lovely show of earthy freshness.

Favourite Producers
Domaine Pelican, Stephane Tissot, Jean Francois Ganevat, Frederic Puffeney

  1. Rolet Arbois Trousseau 2018
    Rolet Arbois Trousseau 2018
Trousseau is a late ripener and needs the sunnier spots to ensure it gains full flavour. You can see this has been given the best spots. Aged in a mix of barrels and stainless steel this offers a fragrant lift of blackcurrants and blueberries with a fine inky tannin. Its sinewy frame is fleshed out with a mix of red and black fruits. This can sometimes be on the gruffer side, but in the hands of a Burgundian winemaker this has flow and elegance. If you've never had a trousseau this is a very fine introduction. GABRIELLE POY, PWS

  2. Rolet Etoile Blanc Chardonnay 2018
    Rolet Etoile Blanc Chardonnay 2018
This comes from hills surrounding the village of Plainoiseau where they've found fossils small fossils called Pentacrines. This is a non-oxidative style of chardonnay, it's fresh, crisp and very finely composed. It's the first vintage made by Burgundian winemaker Cedric Ducot. He's managed to weave delicacy and fineness into this lively chardonnay. The limestone soils imbue a frenetic line which enliven the palate. Signing off with a talcy texture this is a Jura wine with a Burgundian thumbprint. GABRIELLE POY, PWS

  3. Rolet Arbois Vin Jaune 2011 375ml
Rolet Arbois Vin Jaune 2011 375ml

Vin Jaune is Jura's eccentric and original wine. Aged under flor for a minimum of six years, the fruit is from Arbois, Jura's most important region for whites, reds and Vin Jaune.

Striking walnut and dried chamomile notes lead off, with lemon pith, blanched almond, star fruit and quinine accents adding to the lengthy, racy and piercing profile. A beautiful version of this idiosyncratic wine. Drink now through 2030. WINE SPECTATOR

  4. Domaine de Pelican Trois Cepages 2018
Domaine de Pelican Trois Cepages 2018
A blend of the three Jura reds, pinot, ploussard and trousseau. There's a seriousness and depth to this wine that is offset with fragrant fruit and earthy tannins. A beautiful wine.
'The 2018 Arbois Trois Cepages a is brilliant introduction to Guillaume D'Angerville's Jura reds. Bright and punchy, the Trois Cepages offers superb fruit intensity in the mid-weight, lifted style that is typical of these wines. The warm growing season gives this blend of Pinot Noir, Trousseau and Poulsard an extra kick of radiance that works so well.' ANTONIO GALLONI
