  1. Merinas Airen Viura 2020
    Merinas Airen Viura 2020
A blend of Airén, Viura and Verdejo grapes from organic dry-farmed vineyards. This is under the Mesta umbrella of which we have featured numerous wines over the years. They represent incredible value given the quality material that goes into their wines. Here, the vines are over 30 years average age and managed as an integrated ecosystem where no pesticides are used, organic manure is the only fertiliser applied and weed control is done by light, superficial tilling.

There is a lovely soft mix of peach, apple and summer tree fruits sprinkled with a gentle white pepper element. Round, juicy and refreshing with punchy flavours that burst onto the palate. Unoaked and unadulterated and all the better for it. It finishes crisp and clean.

  2. SERRA i BARCELO 'Aucala' Garnacha Tinto 2018
SERRA i BARCELO 'Aucala' Garnacha Tinto 2018

Josep Serra is (4th generation) winemaker of the Serra-Barcelo family property in Montsant. The family comes from Ribera del Ebre (in Catalan, this is the Ebro River valley between Montsant and Terra Alta). As well as Garnatxa Tinto in DO Montsant, Josep makes Garnatxa Blanca and Tinto in neighbouring DO Terra Alta.

There is a thorough selection process at picking and a second manual selection in the bodega, after which the fruit is gently de-stemmed by hand. The wines are aged in low toast 400 litre French oak for 16 months or so, having previously been fermented in the same wood: the barrels are stood on one end, with the head removed to allow an open top for plunging. Once the fermentation is complete, the barrel head is closed. The wines undergo a slow malolactic conversion during 4 months in barrel, and then age on lees. After egg white fining, the wines are free-run-decanted unfiltered to bottle during an appropriate moon phase in January.

30-50yo Garnatxa Negre, with 11% Caranyena, fermented in 8,000 litre inox, with pumpovers and foot pressing. 20% ages 5 months in old 400 litre French oak, but most is matured on lees in stainless steel.

Fine and fresh (that lean chalk soil), it leads with red apple and poppy flower, then a touch of darker interest sneaks out below. Based on delicate rosehip red tea, it's simple, neatly formed, easy and lovely. The tannins are chalky, there's a twist of briar in the jolting pomegranate acidity, a delightful lack of glyceric sweetness, replaced by punch, tang, jolt and run. Great, uncomplicated fun. PWS

  3. Capcanes Lasendal Garnacha blend 2018
    Capcanes Lasendal Garnacha blend 2018
'La Sendal' = 'the path', indicating the site halfway up the mountain to the towering Cabrida vineyards (Cabrida being the nimble mountain goat going up the high mountain passes where the old limestone Cabrida vineyards reside). Lasendal is based on 60 year old high altitude bush vines of Garnatxa with 30% Merlot, 20% Syrah. Vinification in stainless, maceration 8-14 days, malo in tank, natural cold stabilisation in barrel after ageing 9 months in neutral clean old oak. Un-racked, it's bottled un-fined after light filtration. Lasendal is extremely elegant and restrained Garnatxa.
