  1. Rocky Gully Shiraz 2017
    Rocky Gully Shiraz 2017
We are thoroughly impressed with the reds coming out of Frankland Estate at the moment. There estate Syrah is one of the best in the country and we make that call with confidence. What the Rocky Gully offers is the same commitment to quality in a fun and forward package. Sourced from estate and several other vineyards in Frankland river there is distinctive and delicious, cool-climate bent to this wine with its sweet, peppery spice and anise nose. Packed with black forest fruits and spicy finish this is the best we have seen from the Rocky Gully range we have seen so far. PWS

    Baron Leopold Bordeaux Blanc 2018
A new producer in the market that has just nailed it for entry level Bordeaux that actually taste like Bordeaux! Blended from vineyards across the appellation this is a superb introduction to the Bordeaux style, delivering a classic expression of the region and delicious to boot.

Raised in tank and aged on fine lees, an abundance of savoury, grassy grapefruit, tangy and beautifully balanced.Lifted tropical fruit, lime and green apple with subtle herbaceous grassy end notes. Light, fresh and dry the palate with a touch of textural slip that carries it through the zingy close. PWS

  3. Clos Clare Riesling 2014
    Clos Clare Riesling 2014

Despite our worst fears of Christmas lock-in, I'll be heading bush with a boot full of presents and a case of the brilliant Clos Clare 2014 Riesling. Between myself and the extended family, we will make short work of it. Hand-harvested from dry-grown 50yo vines on the iconic Florita Vineyard at Watervale, this regal lady is aging beautifully.

Aromas of fresh cut apple, lemon curd, white peach, pink grapefruit and heady florals on the nose, with lifted floral notes of honeysuckle & orange blossom, lead into a toasty palate showing some gently aged-Riesling flavours. A brilliant match to the classic festive-season aromas of sunscreen, smoked ham, and freshly popped Christmas Crackers crackers. The wine shows a superlative structure, racy acid, and a long and elegant finish. Nice labels too. Head to your nearest sun-drenched verandah, open a book, and drink by the gulpful.  And it's price means if someone else finds your peaceful corner, you won't mind sharing. EFFIE

  4. Fraser Gallop Estate Parterre Cabernet Sauvignon 2018
Fraser Gallop Estate Parterre Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

86/6/4/3/1% cabernet sauvignon/petit verdot/malbec/merlot/cabernet franc. Reaching heights of near perfection, '18 was a vintage responsible for wines just like this. Supple intensity, concentration of flavour without a gram of weight, the length of flavour possessed only by very healthy, perfectly ripe and balanced grapes. What a gloriously seamless wine, continuing the proud legacy of Parterre. Drink by 2041. (96) ERIN LARKIN, Wine Companion

Sporting a slightly different label now, with the house in a fetching sort of purple. The splash of colour works well. Here we have 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, 4% Malbec, 3% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc all grown on the estate at Wilyabrup.

Blackberry and boysenberry, sage and mint, fetching floral perfume, baking spice and vanilla custard oak. It’s medium-bodied with pleasing density of fruit, plenty of fine grained graphite tannin, cool acidity, so svelte and composed, with a long pencilly finish. Needs a little more time for the oak to integrate, but the feel of it, its balance and shape, mark it out as an excellent wine. (95) GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

  5. Inama Soave Vigneti di Foscarino 2018
Inama Soave Vigneti di Foscarino 2018
The 2018 Soave Classico Foscarino is honeyed and perfumed, featuring crushed yellow apples, exotic florals, hints of ginger and sweet smoke. The textures are soft with a twang of zesty acids that pinch at the cheeks, even as ripe orchard fruits soothe the palate. There’s a richness here, mixed with savory brown spices that add further contrasts, as this tapers off dry, with hints of hazelnut and an air of inner florals that seem to linger for well over a minute. The Foscarino is Inama’s throwback style of Soave, which macerates up to 12 hours and then spends six months in used barrels on the lees, followed by another six months in stainless steel. It’s quite unique and really keeps you guessing at what awaits each time you come back to the glass. Consider me a fan. ERIC GUIDO, Vinous.com

  6. Inama Soave Vigneti di Carbonare 2018
Inama Soave Vigneti di Carbonare 2018
The 2018 Soave Classico Carbonare is youthfully rich and packed full of character, displaying dried nectarine and peaches before further evolving to show dusty yellow florals with a hint of almond. There are depths of texture to work through, perfectly contrasted by zesty acids, minerals and a notes of sour apple, yet it still maintains a sense of balanced ripeness. This tapers off long and structured, seeming to slowly melt away from the palate, leaving savory spices and a tug of subtle tannin. There’s so much going on here, along with a promise of even more to come through medium-term cellaring. ERIC GUIDO, Vinous.com

  7. Idlewild The Bird 2014
    Idlewild The Bird 2014
In Italy, the house wine is often light, fresh, aromatic, and firmly structured so as to pair beautifully next a wide range of foods. That is the inspiration for The Bird. Black cherries, anise, fresh strawberries, freshly turned soil, and spicy floral tones highlight the aromatic profile. The mouthfeel is fresh and bright, leans towards a touch of mouth filling richness, and then quickly moves to a clean and firm food driven finish. IDLEWILD

  8. Charteris The Winter Vineyard Otago Pinot Noir 2014
Charteris The Winter Vineyard Otago Pinot Noir 2014
Only 250 dozen produced and held in the winery for five years. From patches of deeper soil on the vineyard 36% whole bunch, 64% whole berry. Juicy plum and cherry fruit has a plushness along with the Charteris hallmark of elegance. (97) JAMES HALLIDAY

Punchy, oak-laden, chewy pinot of vin de garde, long cellaring feel. Restrained, tight, quietly powerful. Charming in tannins, ripples of understated dark cherry fruit, ferrous character and earthiness on the quiet. Some savouriness and malt creeping in. Feels like it needs some more time. 9. Domaine Ostertag Riesling Clos Mathis 2014
Domaine Ostertag Riesling Clos Mathis 2014
Straw-green. Reticent, soil-driven aromas of quince and chamomile, plus an incipient diesel fuel element. Rich, ripe and intensely flavored, featuring notes of green apricot, flowers and botanical herbs. Ripe and long on the back end, which features balsamic mementos. As usual, this large-scale wine tastes big, almost massive, and savory, in a Trocken Pfalz-like way compared to Ostertag’s other more Nahe-like wines. It’s also the easiest wine to recognize blind in Ostertag’s lineup, as it’s more shut down and folded onto itself when young, and larger-scale in its profile, than Ostertag’s other Rieslings (the vineyard is located in Ribeauvillé and therefore has a completely different geological origin than the other Riesling sites owned by Ostertag). The real name of this site is Hagel, which in German means “hail,” so it’s understandable that Ostertag wasn’t keen on using this name for his wine. IAN D'AGATA, VINOUS

  10. Hiedler Kogelberg Riesling 2014
    Hiedler Kogelberg Riesling 2014

Representing a mere 800 liters of the best material from a half-hectare of vines (which most years would join Hiedler’s “Maximum” bottling), this is scented with gentian, wisteria, peach kernel and rinds of tangerine and grapefruit; the latter anticipate the piquant edge to an invigoratingly zesty but otherwise silken palate. Thankfully, there is not only abundant fresh citrus and white peach juiciness to assuage any tendency toward bitterness, but also a remarkable saline-sweet savor of fresh scallop and browned butter that milked my salivary glands in a long, luscious finish. If this gains as much in the course of 2016 as it did between my tasting from tank in June and from bottle in September, it will turn out to be a rare treasure of its vintage. 11. Pierre Bise Savennieres Roche Aux Moines 2016
Pierre Bise Savennieres Roche Aux Moines 2016

The Domaine of Pierre-Bise is a Loire legend. Based in Anjou, they make wines of 'shatteringly singularity', both dry and sweet chenin blanc.  We've managed to get our hands on a small parcel of one of their flagship dry whites, Roche aux Moines Savennieres.  This chenin is simply breathtaking in its purity and freshness.

Claude Papin has been the figurehead of the estate, and in more recent years his sons Christophe and René Papin largely run the show. They're experimenting with new approaches including organic certification. Loire aficionado Chris Kissack sums it up nicely 'in recent years the style has become more honed, more pointed, with greater purity and brighter minerality, and the quality remains very high.'

Roche aux Moines is a revered site, one of the best in Anjou. It is one of the two crus of Savennieres (the other is La Coulee de Serrant made famous by Nicolas Joly). These two crus lie on the right side of the Loire. Roche aux Moines means 'rocks of the monks' alluding to the fact the vineyard this rocky vineyard was planted by Cistercian monks in the 12th century. Its rocky outcrop on volcanic schist soils imbues a savoury salinity and fine chewy texture in the wines.

The Chenin from Roche Aux Moines have so much charm, as this bottling attests to. The nose is warm and cozy, full of honeysuckle, dried herb, and wool. The palate is beautiful, with an elegant, silky, balance of apricot, smoke, salt and a touch of honey. So open and friendly, and an excellent introduction to Roche Aux Moines. Aged mainly in foudre. 12. Savaterre Shiraz 2017
    Savaterre Shiraz 2017

I’ve not much experience with Savaterre Shiraz, but that won’t stop me from trying.

All the liquorice and sarsaparilla, baking spices, some floral things, dark cherry. Medium-bodied, dark spices biscuits, freshly polished boots, root vegetables, smooth supple tannin, a sort of dried cranberry flavour and bite to acidity, sooty and sweet, and dry and moderately long it goes. It’s a very interesting wine. Smells great, tastes maybe a bit baked, front is good, middle is in the middle, finish not bad. Makes you think though. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

  13. Louis Roederer Brut Vintage 2014
    Louis Roederer Brut Vintage 2014
Roederer's 2014 Brut Vintage is beautiful, offering up aromas of pear, mirabelle plum, red berries, warm biscuits and smoke. Full-bodied, layered and elegantly muscular, it's seamless and complete, with terrific mid-palate depth and amplitude. Framed by bright acids and enlivened by a pinpoint mousse, it concludes with a penetrating finish. The blend is 70% Pinot Noir, emphasizing Verzy, and pressure is a touch higher than in its more ethereal Blanc de Blancs counterpart. As I wrote of its 2013 predecessor, this is a wine that puts many prestige cuvées to shame.WILLIAM KELLEY, Robert Parker 2021

    Rizzi Barbaresco Pajore 2014
Enticing new leather, dark baking spice and violet aromas emerge in this taut red. Succulent and savory, it delivers juicy Marasca cherry, raspberry compote, flinty mineral and star anise flavors while firm, refined tannins and fresh acidity offer support. KERRIN O'KEEFE

A beautiful Barbaresco characterized by dried cherries but even blueberries, not to mention dried rose petals and hints of orange rind and cedar. Full body, deliciously chewy tannins, a long line of acidity and a medium to long finish. JAMES SUCKLING

  15. Guimaro Finca Pombeiras Single Vineyard Mencia 2015
Guimaro Finca Pombeiras Single Vineyard Mencia 2015

Again, the 2015 Finca Pombeiras was also available for tasting, as it had been bottled for four months. In 2015 they harvested a little earlier, because it was a warmer and drier year. This is usually more exuberant and expressive than Capeliños, but the palate does not show the same finesse, even if it's still one of the most elegant wines of the appellation. These old vineyards are always a field blend where Mencía dominates, but there are myriad other varieties—Caíño, Sousón, Brancellao, Merenzao, Negreda, Garnacha Tintorera and Mouratón. Unfortunately, only some 800 bottles were filled in February 2017. LUIS GUTIERREZ, erobertparker.com

  16. Guimaro Finca Capelinos Single Vineyard Mencia 2015
Guimaro Finca Capelinos Single Vineyard Mencia 2015
This is a southwest-facing vineyard at 350 meters altitude on schist soils, with nearly centenary vines with mixed varieties but dominated by Mencía. It fermented with 55% full clusters and very long fermentations and a very soft vinification, almost like an infusion to try to not extract too much. It certainly worked fine, and the wine showed great elegance. The palate is super balanced, with very fine tannins and great length. This is very subtle, and it grew in the glass. But it's in the palate where it shows its greatness. Great showing! It matured in used 225-liter oak barrels for 13 months. This is quite accessible, but it should develop further nuances with some more time in bottle; it kept changing in the glass, developing more balsamic notes, with a hint of mint. 1,100 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2017. LUIS GUITIERREZ

  17. Callejuela Manzanilla de Pago Callejuela 2014 500ml
Callejuela Manzanilla de Pago Callejuela 2014 500ml

As with its unfortified sister, this is from the little vineyard 'Hacienda de Doña Francisca, within Pago Callejuela. Fruit classified as a palma. Statically aged - unmoved, or mixed for 4 years under flor which received no further nutrient. It went into botas at 15% and is bottled at 16% abv.

Deep gold, a gentle tisane of old pressed flowers, honeysuckle toffee in branch water and a glint of steely mineral. Meyer lemon, pistachio, salted dough, apple pip, yellow petals. Restrained and elegant it's super dry, with great chalky grip, and has soft and round suppleness giving relief in mid-mouth. Overall, it feels delicate with great character. The vertical wall of fresh chalk depth persists from entry all the way through to after perfume - wine like the proverbial ghost that walked through a wall. TSA

  18. Callejuela Macharnudo Manzanilla 2014 500ml
    Callejuela Macharnudo Manzanilla 2014 500ml

The fruit is from 'la Choza' vineyard inside Pago Macharnudo, and classified as a palma.

Deep gold with just a fringe of bronze. Salt caramel nose is brilliant with spicy dried Seville orange rind, and a great depth of real perfume, seductive rather than heady, really beautiful. Deeper and earthier again, pecans and rye toast, barley and lots of spicy cake-bakey goodness. Sweet and sour and really dynamic in the mouth, it's round and lifted, with barley water edged by chalk-starch and the whole thing open, vibrant and welcoming. TSA
