  1. Merinas Airen Viura 2020
    Merinas Airen Viura 2020
A blend of Airén, Viura and Verdejo grapes from organic dry-farmed vineyards. This is under the Mesta umbrella of which we have featured numerous wines over the years. They represent incredible value given the quality material that goes into their wines. Here, the vines are over 30 years average age and managed as an integrated ecosystem where no pesticides are used, organic manure is the only fertiliser applied and weed control is done by light, superficial tilling.

There is a lovely soft mix of peach, apple and summer tree fruits sprinkled with a gentle white pepper element. Round, juicy and refreshing with punchy flavours that burst onto the palate. Unoaked and unadulterated and all the better for it. It finishes crisp and clean.

  2. Cantina Tollo Rocca Ventosa Pinot Grigio 2020
Cantina Tollo Rocca Ventosa Pinot Grigio 2020
Cantina Tollo is located in the Italian village of Tollo in the region of Abruzzo. The  vineyards spread from the coastal slopes to the verdant mountains overlooking the Mediterranean.

They produce incredible value wines from the traditional varietals of the region. A modern and thoughtful producer they have farmed the lands here for over 60 years with a view to sustainable agriculture and protection of their traditional lands.

This is text-book stuff. Steel and concrete tank with no oak. Crisp and crunchy with a minerally hit on the nose reminiscent of white pepper and ground quartz. Easy fruit that is plush and forward with a fresh cut to the mid-weight flavours. Hard to beat at this price!

  3. Vicoletto Sicilia Catarratto Bianco 2020
    Vicoletto Sicilia Catarratto Bianco 2020

Made from Catarratto, a native grape to Sicily, which is cultivated in the northwestern part of the island. The soils are clay and sand, and the climate is very windy, cool, and dry. Small yields and dedicated winemaking combine to produce a wine that is fresh, versatile and enjoyable.

The vivacity of Sicilian citrus and a hint of pineapple capture your attention, and a luscious texture typical of catarratto makes it perfect to match with seafood. Unfiltered, unfined, vegan, low sulphite.

  4. Nick O'Leary Riesling 2019 375ml
    Nick O'Leary Riesling 2019 375ml

At the ripe old age of 28, Nick O'Leary had been involved in the wine industry for over a decade, working variously in retail, wholesale, viticulture and winemaking. Two years earlier he had laid the foundation for Nick O'Leary Wines, purchasing shiraz from local vignerons (commencing in 2006); riesling following in '08.
His wines have had extraordinarily consistent success in local wine shows and competitions since the first vintages, and are building on that early success in spectacular fashion. At the NSW Wine Awards '15, the 2014 Shiraz was awarded the NSW Wine of the Year Trophy exactly as the 2013 Shiraz was in the prior year - the first time any winery had won the award in consecutive years. JAMES HALLIDAY

A good season for CBR Riesling, I take it, given Our Mike’s recent reviews.

Distinctly spicy, ginger and that, green apple and lime, light powdery texture, positive acidity, though it feels soft and comely in a way, juice and zest and length as it goes. Excellent. A beauty. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

  5. Red Claw by Yabby Lake Pinot Gris 2018 375ml
Red Claw by Yabby Lake Pinot Gris 2018 375ml

Handpicked fruit was whole bunch pressed into tank. After cold settling overnight, juice was racked to another tank for fermentation. Parcels left on yeast lees until July 2016 to gain mouth feel and complexity, then bottled. This Red Claw Pinot Gris has lovely freshness, lifted floral aromas and bright fruit flavours. Showing a hint of nashi pear, subtle spice and a long, finely textured palate. YABBY LAKE

Very light yellow, bright colour, with a sweetly fragrant, light and grapy aroma, some nectarine, stone fruit notes. The wine is light-bodied and dry, delicate and straightforward, with a cleansing, appetising dryness to finish. It's very much a grigio style. The Real Review

  6. Sensale Grillo 2020
    Sensale Grillo 2020
IF you don't know it Grillo is a native to the island of Sicily and the Sensale bottling from Cantine Europa has to be one of the best value options around. The wine comes from the western part of the island and is made without any use of oak and is deliberately styled for early and easy drinking.

Notes of citrus, pear and stone fruits open with a bit of sea-spray action that lends a slightly salty twang to both the nose and pallet. There is definitely a bit of flesh and punchy fruit with citrus to the fore followed by a little stone fruit and minerally hit. We love the way the fruit and savoury clip play off each other in the mouth and just a little hint of bitterness make this the perfect pairing to Mediterranean seafood. Mwah!

  7. Amen Break Chardonnay 2019
    Amen Break Chardonnay 2019
Hailing from a small village in east of Australia called New Zealand the Clonal Brothers are Matt and Steve Harrop and together they are a lethal winemaking combination. Matt will be a familiar name to most as the long-time winemaking brains behind the Shadowfax wines and more recently the newly installed winemaker for Curly Flat. His easy-going nature belies a profound winemaking talent that combines an innate understanding of his craft with equal parts accessibility and intellectualism in his wines. Steve -who still operates out of NZ - also has a couple of decades of vineyard development and wine marketing behind him and his ability to root out the right parcel at the right price is legendary.

This is stellar stuff. Lovely wiff of mealy-reduction and struck match open up to lifted, peach and apple tree fruits with a little mineral hint floating around. Nicely framed by oak that plays a supporting role never intruding but poking its head in here-and-there. The medium bodied body palate packs plenty of flavour in and there is great balance and nice, zipp acidity. PWS

  8. Cantarrana Verdejo 2020
    Cantarrana Verdejo 2020

The Agrícola Castellana Cooperative, situated in the heart of the Rueda D.O., was set up in La Seca (Valladolid) by small number of dedicated vine growers wishing to add value to their products.

Today, it consists of some 400 members who cultivate 2000 hectares of vineyards with modern equipment for the production of 7 millions of litres of wine per harvest and facilities for manufacturing one million of these in oak.

The Bodega has up to date machinery for the reception of the grapes, pneumatic presses and temperature controlled, stainless steel vessels for fermentation, all of wich have contributed enormously to improve the quality of the wines.

Another spot on release brimming with summer fruit salad, with a lovely peachy lift. It's juicy and fleshy with just a little snap on the palate to keep it fresh. Drink don't think! PWS

  9. Fontaleoni Rosato Condorino IGT Toscana 2020
Fontaleoni Rosato Condorino IGT Toscana 2020

Fontaleoni is a family estate run by brother and sister team, Matteo and Simona Troiani, with a little help from consultant Paolo Caciorgna. They've succeeded in producing a range that is emblematic of the best of what the region has to offer with particular emphasis on Vernaccia.

Like all their wines they get the primo treatment in the winery. A blend of 70% Sangiovese and 30% Merlot this presents with a top note of rose-petal, plum, and wild cranberry. Its bright and crunchy mouthfeel gives way to soft red fruits and that sangiovese sour cherry we all know and love. I don't know why we don't see more sangiovese base rose as they seem to get that balance of savoury and sweet so well, especially when they are pink.

  10. 22 Degrees Kaleidoscope of Mayhem Halo White 2020
22 Degrees Kaleidoscope of Mayhem Halo White 2020
A relatively new label of Ashley Ratcliff of Ricca Terra, bringing together familiar varieties with new, climate adaptive planting. We are big fans of what he is doing and big fans of this style of white particuarly with warmer weather creeping in. This a the perfect blend of zip and punch with plenty of character and so easy to down.

Blend here is Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Vermentino and Zibbibo.  A fun, leap-from-the-glass style, Sauvignon's tropical fruits meet the unmistakably grapey qualities of Zibbibo, a summer fruit salad of flavours.  Juicy and gluggable, though under its overt appeal there's some interest, focus and proper complexity.

  11. Soho Wine Co Peggy Sauvignon Blanc 2020
Soho Wine Co Peggy Sauvignon Blanc 2020
Fabulously fruited and brightly expressed with feijoa, Granny Smith apple, lemon/lime zest and floral aromas on the nose, followed by a flavoursome palate delivering excellent fruit intensity and juicy acidity. SAM KIM, Wine Orbit

This is part of the entry level range from the highly regarded Soho wines. A combination of Wairau & Awatere Valley's in the Marlborough this straddles a wonderful bridge between the tropical fruit bombs and more racy versions of sauvignon blanc we see in regions like the Adelaide Hills. It does it with style and grace too and doesn't leave any of that Marlborough goodness out but in a more focused and fine package.

  12. Farina Pinot Grigio 2020
    Farina Pinot Grigio 2020
Farina of Veneto was founded in the early 1900s with a passion and desire for producing the highest quality wines possible from the Veneto region. Cousins Claudio and Elena Farina; now 3 generations are responsible for continuity of the Farina tradition and focus on quality production.
Farina is located in San Pietro in the heart of the Valpolicella Classica; the historical and original Valpolicella. Claudio and Elena own 10 hectares of their own vineyards and source fruit from long standing grower partnerships which encompass a further 70 hectares under vine.

This opens with a nice little lift of ripe peach, apple, floral notes and a hint of flinty stone shimmering around the edges. The palate has some nice plump fruit with a streak of minerally freshness that runs through the middle. Its on the heavier side of light and the fact that it comes off a combination of volcanic, alluvial and calcareous soils lends it a lot of complexity especially for a wine at this level. 100% steel tank means it remains beautifully vibrant. Lots of appeal here and very versatile.

  13. Insieme Pinot Grigio 2020
    Insieme Pinot Grigio 2020
The Bruni family works with farmers all over Italy for the Insieme label, producing wines which are delicious, top value, and varietally and regionally correct. This is not the first time we have featured their wines and it certainly won't be the last. They offer exceptional value but also that little something that you just can't quite put your finger on.

Raised without oak, this is a fruit driven expression, pushing against the neutrality of some of these styles.  Pear and green melon fruit, juicy and a crackling mineral undertone, beautifully textured and has some personality about it.

  14. Domaine Pajot Cotes de Gascogne Blanc 2019
Domaine Pajot Cotes de Gascogne Blanc 2019

The Domaine itself is plonked on the hills overlooking Eauze the capital of Armagnac. Its certified organic and has eighty acres of vines that grow on the gentle hills of sand and fine silt soils. All harvests are done by hand and the domaine does not use any chemical fertilizers or pesticides. This is a dry and textural blend of Colombard, Ugni-Blanc, Sauvignon, and Gros-Manseng.

They have done it again! This is my go to white for summer with a lovely lemony, floral lilt and powdery, perfumed nose. Gentle and bright with clean and crisp flavours of orchard fruits and white nectarine. Its uncomplicated and delicious with clean, crunchy fruits and a zippy, minerally finish. Ridiculous value. MYLES, PWS

  15. Ca Erto Soave 2020
    Ca Erto Soave 2020
This Soave is from the 'Classico' zone in the heart of the region, and is composed of mostly local variety Garganega, with just splash of Trebbiano. The team at Ca Erto utilise a combination of both modern and traditional techniques to coax the most out of their wines. It's all about purity of fruit and freshness here which they deliver in spades.

This vintage is on the lighter side of Soave but in saying that it lacks nothing in flavour and packs a punch in the value stakes. Fresh cut peaches and green apple with a touch of white pepper spice lead into a bright but delicate nose. Plenty of zippy fruit darts around the palate. The palate is clean and clear, vibrant and snappy with a little green hazelnut twang on the finish. Delicious stuff and we be you will be coming back for more after you try this.

  16. Voyager Estate Chenin Blanc 2021
    Voyager Estate Chenin Blanc 2021

Voyager Estate put out some of the most incredible value wines in Margaret River and we wonder sometimes why it isn't more of a household name. Well, we will keep plugging it. This comes off vines planted in 1978 and are some of the region's oldest chenin vines. This is such a wonderful example of the variety here in Australia - why isn't there more?

Waxy citrus and pear fruits open up to a quartz kissed nose with a touch of white pepper and baked apple. There is generosity on the palate that is kicked along with the varietal's typical lively line of acid. Some pulpy texture rides the palate while the tree fruits zing and zip around the mouth all the way through to the crunchy finish.

  17. Bests Great Western Riesling 2021
    Bests Great Western Riesling 2021

Great Western Riesling. As I say every year: yes please.

It’s just such a lovely wine to drink. It offers intensity and character in the most undemanding of ways: one sip and you’re off and away. Lime, talc and steel. A whisper of mandarin. And apple, green apple. Its beauty is effortless. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

What is there to say about the classic Aussie Rielsing? Everything you could want and more. The variety was first planted as part of Henry Best's 'Nursery Block' vineyard back in the 1860's and has been an integral part of the Best's potfolio for over 20 years. A national treasure we think that marries ripe fruit and crystalline purity at its best.

  18. Gunderloch Fritz Riesling 2020
    Gunderloch Fritz Riesling 2020

How do they do it? This has been a PWS favourite for some time now and it never fails to deliver. Made by Rheinhessen legends Gunderloch with vineyards  close to the Rhines south-east steep slopes. The combination of the red slate soil, the proximity to the river, the exposure to the sun and the steepness of the vineyards - are perfect for producing wonderful ripeness. If you are a German riesling fan it would be hard to beat this for the sheer quality and insane value it represents.

The wine shows lovely stone fruit, peach and pithy characters as it opens in the glass. There is a salty mineral hit to that is really lovely. The fresh natural acidity zip through the ripe and spice flecked palate while a little aromatic lift gives this some real interest. Dry, fresh and full of character. PWS

    Baron Leopold Bordeaux Blanc 2018
A new producer in the market that has just nailed it for entry level Bordeaux that actually taste like Bordeaux! Blended from vineyards across the appellation this is a superb introduction to the Bordeaux style, delivering a classic expression of the region and delicious to boot.

Raised in tank and aged on fine lees, an abundance of savoury, grassy grapefruit, tangy and beautifully balanced.Lifted tropical fruit, lime and green apple with subtle herbaceous grassy end notes. Light, fresh and dry the palate with a touch of textural slip that carries it through the zingy close. PWS

Chapoutier La Combe Pilate Viognier 2017

The Chapoutiere range is huge and it is incredible to behold the quality across the board from this famous producer given the sheer amount of wine they make.

This is off his families, mixed-use farm and sits outside the typical Condrieu framework both in style and place.

There is an intriguing struck-flint, mineral note mixed with floral edges and fresh apricot. It's zippy an fresh with vibrant peach and apricot fruit to the fore. It lively and full of energy and raring to go. PWS

  21. Kris Wines Pinot Grigio 2020
    Kris Wines Pinot Grigio 2020
From one of the masters of North Eastern Italy, Franz Haas, comes the ‘Kris’ Pinot Grigio. This is their ‘entry’ level Grigio but absolutely over delivers as a bang-for-your-buck drop.

White peach and crunchy tree fruits to the fore with a gently spiced, quartz/mineral nose. The palate is clean as a whistle with a core of sweet white fruits cut with bright, zippy acidity. At the same time the palate is generous with a lovely textural element that gives it nice weight and punch while always remaining bright and fresh. Another fantastic effort!
