  1. Fournier Freres Cidre Artisanal de Normandie Brut 750ml
Fournier Freres Cidre Artisanal de Normandie Brut 750ml

    STAGE 4 - HILLY - DUNKERQUE > CALAIS 171.5 KM

Silver medalist in 2009 and Gold Medal in 2010 and 2011 - Agricole de Paris competition.

A blend of 100% Normandy cider apples, selected for their delicate flavours combining freshness and thirst-quenching, associated with slow fermentation. This is farm-to-table stuff here as the Fournier crew source apples only from their own oarchards.

That earthy, Normandy cider nose with with wild foresty notes and a melange of red and green apple. A mellow, persistent bead in a round and mouthfilling style. Crunchy and crisp and on the drier side of cider. A bit of a chalky hit and little bit of grip but certainly on the easy and generous side of things. Serve chilled but not too cold to get the most out of it.

    Chapoutier Costiere de Nimes 2017
Opens with crème de mure, wild forest fruits and summer raspberries. Plenty of mulled spices and wild herbs. The palate is full and ripe with a tangy hit of salty liquorice on the close. The tannins are soft and plush and provide a nice frame for the fruit to hang off. PWS

  3. Jules Mediterranean Rose 2019
    Jules Mediterranean Rose 2019
Hugh and Jane Faulkner fell in love with a vineyard, situated on the foothills of the Masif des Maures, in the centre of the Var, and settled at the property in 1989. Their eldest son Julian would eventually take over the running of the vineyard in 2000. A shrewd wine businessman and talented vigneron, Julian established the Jules label with the mission to craft delicious, accessible, and great value wines with single estate personality.

Another killer Rose from Jules and one of those wines you ask yourself how they can do it for the money? Hints of citrus peel, fresh cut fennel and cranberry/red currant fruits on the nose follow into a juicy palate of crunchy, bright red fruit with a white pepper finish. Really juicy and bright but perfectly dry and eminently drinkable. Now under screwcap how can you go wrong? You would be crazy to not have a dozen of waiting in the wings for every time someone drops by for a drink on the patio or that last minute BBQ invite. PWS

Chateau Fontareche Corbieres Rouge Vieilles Vignes 2019
    STAGE 16 - HILLY - CARCASSONNE > FOIX 178.5 KM

The Fontarèche property, at the heart of Corbiere, has a long, illustrious and noble history dating back to 1201. Current proprietor, Jacques de Lamy took over from his father, Count Edouard de Lamy in 1957 where the de Lamy family has been in charge of the property since 1682.

Fontarèche work with 17 grape varieties of which their Carignan is held the highest regards. The vines are planted to the semi-desert Mediterranean climate trapped between the Atlantic and Mediterranean, the Atlantic breezes funnel through the mountain ranges that form the backdrop of the region and help to temper the summer heat in the vineyards retaining freshness and vibrancy in the wines.

Wonderfully lifted violets, mulberry and blue fruits all underlined by gentle smoke and graphite. The palate is brimming with a core of dark fruits, sweet and savoury notes with a really nice focus and buzzy energy. Really is surprising the level of subtle complexity at this price point that remains so easy to drink at the same time. Fast becoming a staff favourite! MYLES, PWS

Domaine Pajot Cotes de Gascogne Blanc 2019

The Domaine itself is plonked on the hills overlooking Eauze the capital of Armagnac. Its certified organic and has eighty acres of vines that grow on the gentle hills of sand and fine silt soils. All harvests are done by hand and the domaine does not use any chemical fertilizers or pesticides. This is a dry and textural blend of Colombard, Ugni-Blanc, Sauvignon, and Gros-Manseng.

They have done it again! This is my go to white for summer with a lovely lemony, floral lilt and powdery, perfumed nose. Gentle and bright with clean and crisp flavours of orchard fruits and white nectarine. Its uncomplicated and delicious with clean, crunchy fruits and a zippy, minerally finish. Ridiculous value. MYLES, PWS

  7. Chateau Coupe Roses Fremillant Rose 2020
Chateau Coupe Roses Fremillant Rose 2020

Situated in La Caunette, a small and beautiful village in Minervois, just close to the Montagne Noire the family of Françoise Le Calvez, his parents, son and daughter have created something incredibly special from this little corner they have carved out in the Mediterranean hinterlands.

Today the vineyard holdings total 143 acres with an assortment of some 40 plots in total, mostly on the mountain plateau standing high above their village of La Caunette. At 750 – 1350 ft above sea level these are some of the highest sites in the AOC. The warm days and cool nights result in one the longest growing seasons in the region. Regardless the wine remain wonderfully fresh and vibrant.

A wonderful Provence style rose but with a little extra meat on it bones. The high mourvedre count gives this a beautiful earthy spice element that lingers gently over red and black currant fruit, orange peel and pithy citrus fruit. Still in the medium bodied category this has a little extra heft and comes of feeling firm and full as well as bright and fresh. Juicy fruits and a spicy finish bring it all together nicely.

Chapoutier La Combe Pilate Viognier 2017

The Chapoutiere range is huge and it is incredible to behold the quality across the board from this famous producer given the sheer amount of wine they make.

This is off his families, mixed-use farm and sits outside the typical Condrieu framework both in style and place.

There is an intriguing struck-flint, mineral note mixed with floral edges and fresh apricot. It's zippy an fresh with vibrant peach and apricot fruit to the fore. It lively and full of energy and raring to go. PWS

  9. Marcel Malbec 2018
    Marcel Malbec 2018
    STAGE 19 -  FLAT - CASTELNAU-MAGNOAC > CAHORS 188.5 KM

Château du Cèdre is widely regarded as the leading estate in Cahors. Brothers Pascal and Jean-Marc Verhaeghe, both qualified oenologists, can trace its history back to their grandfather Léon who left his native Flanders to settle in south-west France in the early 1900s. In due course Léon’s son Charles and his wife Marie-Thérèse started a mixed farm in 1958 and began planting one hectare of vines in three different plots every year.

This is made from fruit that doesn't make the estate range and also bought fruit from the greater southwest area. Sees no oak.

This is the soft and juicy side of Malbec with mulberry and damson fruit flecked with violet and sweet spice. The usual Cahor tannins are melted away into the pluch fruit and this is made to drink young and in fron of a fire. Great examlpe of what the southwest can do at this level when given a little care and attention. PWS

100% Malbec from purchased fruit grown on the 1st and 2nd terraces close to the river. The fruit is 100% de-stemmed and crushed, then the juice given a 3-4 day cold soak, to extract colour and a little tannin, before being pressed and cool-fermented in stainless steel. Matured in concrete tanks for 6-8 months. 'This shows the soft, juicy side of Malbec. No serious tannins here, just red berry fruit and fine acidity. That means it's ready to drink this winter.' 10. Rive Droite Rive Gauche Cotes du Rhone 2020
Rive Droite Rive Gauche Cotes du Rhone 2020
Rive Droite Rive Gauche simply means right bank, left bank and the name derives from fruit for the wine being sourced from both sides of the river - the grenache coming mainly from the left (gauche) and the Syrah from the village of Daumazan (on the rive droite), near Tavel. It is also a French film starring the rotund wine-nut actor Gerard Depardieu - fun fact!

This is a lovely fresh and crunchy styled Rhone from our friends at Rive Droite. There is touch of thyme and bay over red spiced fruits, layered with a little bit of red liquorice. This is a medium bodied rendition with a pure core of raspberry, wild strawberry and splash of black berry fruit in the mix. Its lithe with a lovely fresh cut to the sweet fruits that makes this look wonderfully elegant and damn easy to like.

  11. Des Grande Esperances Java Rouge 2019
Des Grande Esperances Java Rouge 2019
This is a cracking Blend of gamay 60% malbec 20% and cabernet Franc 20% made by the team at Domaines de Grande Esperances. They are geared towards quality production and organic farming base in the Loire Valley and working with about 24 hectares of land and 8 varietals. These are fun and delicious wines that don't take themselves to seriously but still over-deliver in spades.

A lifted fruit punch of red fruits - think strawberry, raspberry, sour cherry and red currant that leap out of the glass. A wild spicy note carries the bold fruit turning round into lovely savoury peppery sprinkles. There is a light lick of tannin that keeps this all-in check. Yum!

Eric Bordelet Sydre Brut Tendre Apple Cider NV
The biodynamic orchards are comprised of trees upto 50+ years old containing 40-50 varieties of heirloom apples. The hand-harvested fruit is dehydrated for 4-5 weeks and simply ground and pressed then settled for clarification before fermenting naturally, originating in tank and finishing in bottle. Bubbles develop within two weeks of bottling. It has lovely aromatics of graham and baked apple, followed by elegant bubbles and an off-dry profile on the palate.

  13. Reine Juliette Carignan 2019
    Reine Juliette Carignan 2019
The Domaine Reine Juliette sits along the southern side of the modern A9, which historically was the Via Domitia which connected Italy to Spain. Guillaume and his sister Marion inherited the estate from his parents in 1985, and they are now joined by his son in working the land. Together they are the 6th and 7th generations of Allies making wine at Reine Juliette.

Harvested early (August) to keep some freshness and also because the summer was very dry and warm. 15 days cold maceration, malolactic fermentation, aged 6 months in concrete tanks. Very drinkable Carignan. The dark fruit character shows very well with silky tannins, touch of chopped herbs and pepperiness."

  14. Roche de Bellene Bellenos Blanc 2018
Roche de Bellene Bellenos Blanc 2018
The Bellenos range sit under the newly created Coteaux Bougignons (Hillside Burgundy) appellation. This new appellation was created was created in 2011 to allow producers in the region more freedom to blend wines, among varieties and throughout a larger designated area. It is designed to promote Burgundy that is of real quality but perhaps fits outside the traditional constraints of AOC regulations. It extends from Cote d’or in the north to Beaujolais in the south.

The blanc is a blend of mainly chardonnay sourced from a cluster of southern Burgundy and northern Beaujolais sites. A touch of aligoté is also blended in to provide a little extra zip and vigour to the wine. Fermentation is all done in stainless steel tank with about 8 months in larger old barrels and aging on fine lees to provide a little extra texture and weight. PWS

  15. Jaboulet Parallele 45 Cotes du Rhone Blanc 2019
Jaboulet Parallele 45 Cotes du Rhone Blanc 2019

Since taking over Jaboulet in 2003 the Frey family have been moving towards organics and biodynamic viticulture - not always that easy in the temperate climes of the Northern Rhone, especially at volume - yet in 2017 they achieved their goal.

To get there they have dramatically reduced yields - up to 60% less fruit per hectare now than when they took over.

The wines across the board have improved dramatically in quality and their entry level Cotes du Rhone both red and white are no exception. These are amazing quality for the amount of wine made and the price. For $20 a bottle (in dozen) you will struggle to find wines as well put together and expressive of the Rhone.

Saturated ruby. Ripe black raspberry and cherry aromas are complicated by suggestions of cracked pepper, allspice and pungent flowers. 18. Pierre Marie Chermette Beaujolais Les Griottes Beaujolais 2019 375ml
Pierre Marie Chermette Beaujolais Les Griottes Beaujolais 2019 375ml

crewcap. This Beaujolais cherrybomb is drawn from 20- to 40-year-old vines grown on dark, granite soils around the Chermette homestead in Saint-Vérand (southern Beaujolais). The winemaking here has remained unchanged for decades, with traditional whole-bunch, semi-carbonic ferment in concrete tanks and then maturation in tank and ancient oak casks still the order of the day.

As opposed to his age-worthy Crus from Moulin-a-Vent, Fleurie, et al, Chermette's aim here is to produce something light-bodied and cherry-fruited with reach-for-another-glass charm--something the juicy-crunchy 2019 nails with ease. From one of the region's great addresses, this is a punchy and buoyant red that goes down dangerously easily. PWS

Pale peach skin color. Fresh citrus fruits, red berries and a hint of nectarine on the incisive, mineral-accented nose. Silky and focused on the palate, offering light-bodied strawberry, tangerine and succulent herb flavors. Finishes smooth and subtly sweet, with a repeating red berry note and good tenacity. A range of wines that express the character of their grape varieties in Guillaume's preferred style, hence 'Selon Létang' (according to the winemaker Guillaume Létang). The style? Sleekly built but with plenty of flavour - nailed it!

This 'croquant' Cinsault is bright and deliciously enjoyable. Unoaked, vibrant redcurrant and raspberry fruit with a wild, delicately tannic herbaceous edge. There is an almost Pinot Noir like edge to these wines or a north-west Spanish feel with its minerally flecked fruit. Either way it's a lovely Cinsault and makes us wonder why we don't see more. PWS

While there is no doubt Alsace is well known for its aromatic white varietals it is probably not as well known as the steward of great sparkling. Well, this little drop will change your mind. This doesn't try to be Champagne and it's all the better for it. The aim is to produce a clean, fun and delicious sparkling that nods to its home in Alsace but overdelivers in quality, and it has that in spades!

This is sensational value, made from Pinot Blanc and Riesling in a traditional method. Nashi pear and green apple with hints of lime. Cumquat, apple, zesty citrus lead in the mouth to a long finish. Excellent little wine and you would be just as happy popping this for a toast as you would cracking it at a BBQ to get the party started.
