  1. Des Grande Esperances Java Rouge 2019
Des Grande Esperances Java Rouge 2019
This is a cracking Blend of gamay 60% malbec 20% and cabernet Franc 20% made by the team at Domaines de Grande Esperances. They are geared towards quality production and organic farming base in the Loire Valley and working with about 24 hectares of land and 8 varietals. These are fun and delicious wines that don't take themselves to seriously but still over-deliver in spades.

A lifted fruit punch of red fruits - think strawberry, raspberry, sour cherry and red currant that leap out of the glass. A wild spicy note carries the bold fruit turning round into lovely savoury peppery sprinkles. There is a light lick of tannin that keeps this all-in check. Yum!

  2. Roche de Bellene Bellenos Rouge 2018
Roche de Bellene Bellenos Rouge 2018
The Bellenos Cuvée Rouge is primarily from the Beaujolais area in the south of Burgundy, where fruity, mineral-inflected Gamay Noir is grown on granite soils. It is blended with finely structured Pinot Noir from the Côte d’Or in northern Burgundy. The result is a fresh, fruit-forward “Vin de Plaisir” — a deliciously expressive wine for everyday enjoyment.

  3. Pierre Marie Chermette Beaujolais Les Griottes Beaujolais 2019 375ml
Pierre Marie Chermette Beaujolais Les Griottes Beaujolais 2019 375ml

crewcap. This Beaujolais cherrybomb is drawn from 20- to 40-year-old vines grown on dark, granite soils around the Chermette homestead in Saint-Vérand (southern Beaujolais). The winemaking here has remained unchanged for decades, with traditional whole-bunch, semi-carbonic ferment in concrete tanks and then maturation in tank and ancient oak casks still the order of the day.

As opposed to his age-worthy Crus from Moulin-a-Vent, Fleurie, et al, Chermette's aim here is to produce something light-bodied and cherry-fruited with reach-for-another-glass charm--something the juicy-crunchy 2019 nails with ease. From one of the region's great addresses, this is a punchy and buoyant red that goes down dangerously easily. PWS

Pale peach skin color. Fresh citrus fruits, red berries and a hint of nectarine on the incisive, mineral-accented nose. Silky and focused on the palate, offering light-bodied strawberry, tangerine and succulent herb flavors. Finishes smooth and subtly sweet, with a repeating red berry note and good tenacity. 4. Caves de Pouilly Les Tuileries Coteaux du Giennois Sur Loire Rouge 2018
Caves de Pouilly Les Tuileries Coteaux du Giennois Sur Loire Rouge 2018
The Caves de Poulliy wines are sourced from the relatively new appellation of Cotteaux de Giennois which sits in the upper Loire just north of Sancerre. It shares the same kimeridgian clay and limestone soils commone to the region which give the wines their distinctive, minerally twang.

These are such cracking wines that are terroir driven and unique as well as being stupidly drinkable. Ther is a white that is baby Sancerre and this red which is blend of mainly pinot noir with a touch of gamay. It's all about the pure red fruits and crunchy earthy spice which jumps out at you. It's bright and brambly and you can smell the clay soils. Airy and easy but with a spike of fresh tannin that cuts the juicy fruit. All-in-all pretty easy to get through a bottle of this with a friend so you better buy two! PWS

  5. Stephane Aviron Beaujolais Village 2018
    Stephane Aviron Beaujolais Village 2018

Always so pretty. There is a cherry cola thing here this year. It has an earthier, fresh turned soil aspect too. Still, it is mostly all about those attractive red and blue fruits and that heady perfume. A little richer and with more plushness than last year. Cool fruit and spices with a subtle and sweet lick of easy tannins. All up it is another utterly delicious release of Stephane. ROSCOE

  6. Rising Yarra Valley Gamay 2020
    Rising Yarra Valley Gamay 2020

Tom Belford makes the wines and this is part of the Sticks Crew out of the Yarra. That sort of combo means you are guaranteed quality, gluggablity and great value.

A notable patch of Yarra Valley gamay here.

Pretty, floral and red cherry/raspberry scented and flavoured red. Crisp, crunchy texture, bright, light, sour-edged fruit character, slightly nettle-y, leafy thing through the wine too. Blood orange flavours and acidity finish the wine. Neat and tidy, vibrant feeling lighter red, right on the edge of ripeness. MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Front

  7. Chateau Thivin Cotes du Brouilly Sept Vignes 2019 375ml
Chateau Thivin Cotes du Brouilly Sept Vignes 2019 375ml
Thivin's 2019 Côte de Brouilly unwinds in the glass with inviting aromas of plums, red berries, warm spices and peonies. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and enveloping, it's bright and precise, with fine depth at the core and real energy, concluding with a long, gently tannic finish. A touch finer-boned and more dynamic than the gourmand, demonstrative 2018, this is showing very well. WILLIAM KELLEY, robertparker.com

  8. Guy Breton Marylou Beaujolais Village 2020
Guy Breton Marylou Beaujolais Village 2020

Named in honour of his daughter, Marylou is sourced from Morgon vines just 500 meters from his old vines.

This has a touch of flamboyance - heady notes of roses, cranberries and spiced cherries mingle with some subtle mineral tones. There's detail and fineness that delight. It's a very classy Beaujolais Village, its complexity suggests its more  in line with Cru quality. This is vibrant and welcoming in its youth. GABRIELLE POY, PWS

  9. Bernard Metrat Fleurie 'La Roilette' Beaujolais 2019 1500ml
Bernard Metrat Fleurie 'La Roilette' Beaujolais 2019 1500ml
From vines planted 1924 and 1936. La Roilette is regarded as one of the best sites in Fleurie, and this old vines cuvee (60-90+ years old vines) is produced from a patch of vines planted in pink granite-clay soil located beside the winery in the northern part of the appellation beside Moulin-a-Vent. 15% of this cuvee is vinified in barrel (none new) giving extra dimension to its freshness and perfume, will also age for 10+ years. This is Gamay at it's finest and beautifully perfumed best. PWS

La Roilette cru sits on very deep black granite. Historically, La Roilette used to be part of Moulin-à-Vent, which borders it to the east. In 1920, when Fleurie was demarcated, La Roilette ended up in Fleurie. This wine comes from vines planted in the 1920s and 1930s, and it has amazing density and precision. 10. Guy Breton Morgon Vielles Vignes 2020
Guy Breton Morgon Vielles Vignes 2020

Breton's flagship wine, the Morgon “Vieilles Vignes” comes from 80 year old vines in the Saint Joseph and Grand Cras subzones which give fine, stony wines. A high-lying sandy parcel contributes more complexity, structure, and acidity to the blend.

Sappy and spicy on the palate, its velvety flush of fruit flows seamlessly across the palate. Inky and minerally tones balance out the fruit and florals. Phoar this is a beauty! It's a majestic and mighty Morgon with lucidity and vivacity. Fine silty tannins frame the wine. It's incredibly delicious and a little age will welcome some savoury flavours.
