  1. Nick O'Leary Riesling 2019 375ml
    Nick O'Leary Riesling 2019 375ml

At the ripe old age of 28, Nick O'Leary had been involved in the wine industry for over a decade, working variously in retail, wholesale, viticulture and winemaking. Two years earlier he had laid the foundation for Nick O'Leary Wines, purchasing shiraz from local vignerons (commencing in 2006); riesling following in '08.
His wines have had extraordinarily consistent success in local wine shows and competitions since the first vintages, and are building on that early success in spectacular fashion. At the NSW Wine Awards '15, the 2014 Shiraz was awarded the NSW Wine of the Year Trophy exactly as the 2013 Shiraz was in the prior year - the first time any winery had won the award in consecutive years. JAMES HALLIDAY

A good season for CBR Riesling, I take it, given Our Mike’s recent reviews.

Distinctly spicy, ginger and that, green apple and lime, light powdery texture, positive acidity, though it feels soft and comely in a way, juice and zest and length as it goes. Excellent. A beauty. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

  2. Gaelic Cemetery Vineyard Celtic Farm Riesling 2020
Gaelic Cemetery Vineyard Celtic Farm Riesling 2020

From a single estate vineyard in White Hut, planted 2006. Gaelic Cemetery Vineyard is unique in raising 4 distinct rieslings with essentially the same recipe from the same vineyard. This is the entry-level wine, from the youngest vines, with significantly larger production than the other 3 put together. This is a spicy, rich and concentrated style boasting a medium straw hue and custard apple and Golden Delicious apple ripeness contrasting lemon and lime tension. A dollop of RS (3.8g/L) serves to soften its phenolic grip nicely. Full and flavoursome, if not refined. Drink now. TYSON STELZER, James Halliday

The Gaelic cemetery property was established in 1996 by Clare riesling legends, the Pike family. Winemaker Adam Clay has continued the excellent work established by Neil with a focus on doing as little possible in the winery relying on quality fruit and top-notch vineyards rather then tricked up winemaking. These are pure and speak so highly of place.

  3. Gunderloch Fritz Riesling 2020
    Gunderloch Fritz Riesling 2020

How do they do it? This has been a PWS favourite for some time now and it never fails to deliver. Made by Rheinhessen legends Gunderloch with vineyards  close to the Rhines south-east steep slopes. The combination of the red slate soil, the proximity to the river, the exposure to the sun and the steepness of the vineyards - are perfect for producing wonderful ripeness. If you are a German riesling fan it would be hard to beat this for the sheer quality and insane value it represents.

The wine shows lovely stone fruit, peach and pithy characters as it opens in the glass. There is a salty mineral hit to that is really lovely. The fresh natural acidity zip through the ripe and spice flecked palate while a little aromatic lift gives this some real interest. Dry, fresh and full of character. PWS

  4. Stadt Krems Lossterrassen Gruner Veltliner 2020
Stadt Krems Lossterrassen Gruner Veltliner 2020
A very attractive, fruit-driven gruner veltliner, rippling with white-apple, white-peach and pepper aromas. Juicy and polished with lively acidity that’s already beautifully integrated. Good length. Drink now. Screw cap. JAMES SUCKLING

With more than 550 years of history, Weingut Stadt Krems is one of the oldest wine-producers in Austria, even in the whole of Europe. Fritz Miesbauer and the team cultivate 31 hectares of vineyards on the estate, whose holdings are exclusively on the best terraced locations of the city of Krems. The results are dynamic and modern wines, with lovely purity and a wonderful sense of place.

  5. Riversdale Estate Riesling 2019
    Riversdale Estate Riesling 2019
Riversdale Estate is located in the basin of the Coal River Valley, in Southern Tasmania. The Coal River Valley is the second largest wine region in Tasmania and continues to grow each year as a result of the unique growing climates located in the Valley. Riversdale is located in the basin of the valley and is the only vineyard to front Pittwater which gives temperature advantages during the winter and summer months.

Due to the climate advantages it is able to produce 9 different varieties with a reputation for Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Riesling. Riversdale Estate was purchased in 1980 by Ian Roberts for Angora goat purposes. The first vines were planted in 1991 and are some of the oldest in the region. PWS

The first thing you notice is the intense burst of cooked apple-like flavour, its tang intact, its flavours singing. The second is the texture, which is a step up on most young rieslings. This is a floral, spicy wine with excellent fruit concentration, but with more than a little character to boot. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, James Halliday

  6. Nick O'Leary Riesling 2021
    Nick O'Leary Riesling 2021

A good season for CBR Riesling, I take it, given Our Mike’s recent reviews.

Distinctly spicy, ginger and that, green apple and lime, light powdery texture, positive acidity, though it feels soft and comely in a way, juice and zest and length as it goes. Excellent. A beauty. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

Situated in the picturesque Hall Valley, in the Murrumbidgee River corridor, just outside the ACT, the estate incorporates a modern winemaking facility and 5-hectare vineyard. A strong focus on hand worked Shiraz and Riesling wines that truly exhibit the character of our region as well as expressing unique personality and style.

A Canberra regional blend, consisting of 9 different vineyard parcels. Grapes were hand harvested, then whole bunch pressed into stainless steel tanks and the wine held on light lees work for added texture.

White flowers, apple blossom and citrus. The palate is generous with a powerful mix of Granny Smith apple and freshly squeezed lime. The mouth-watering natural acidity leads to a pristine palate of balance and length. The lees works gives a lovely grip and softens and brings out some of that mid-palate juiciness that kicks the fruit along to a taught close. Yum!

  8. Hutton Vale Farm Eden Valley Riesling 2017
Hutton Vale Farm Eden Valley Riesling 2017
If you ever want to show someone just how glorious the riesling grape can be, serve them a glass of this. It’s agenda-free riesling, fundamentally delicious, intense with flavour but not cutting, gorgeous at every turn, cellarworthy if you so desire, but in no way is patience a prerequisite. Lime, orange blossom, a gently candied aspect, a slip of pure lemon. It’s bold and it’s beautiful. (95) JAMES HALLIDAY

  9. Trimbach Reserve Riesling 2018 375ml
    Trimbach Reserve Riesling 2018 375ml
Trimbach is at the summit of dry white winemaking. CLIVE COATEDS M.W.

With viticultural origins going back to 1626 this family owned estate produces some of the finest wines not only of Alsace, but indeed the entire world of wine. Around the villages of Ribeauvillé and Hunawihr, the Trimbach family owns 57 hectares of vineyards from some of the most famed sites in the region.

The reserve wines are sourced from rigorously selected grapes grown in and around Ribeauville and surrounding villages. They are fermented dry and text book example of classic Alsace fair.

Quince, pear and apple with a touch of mandarin open to an exotic and layered nose. There is a touch of lime zest and white pepper folded into the soft fruits. The clean pristine fruit is sliced down the middle of the palate with a racy, tight quartz-mineral core. On the close the palate shifts toward more tropical notes and a sense of opulence that is kept in check by a dry and mineral finish. PWS

Layers of flavour and texture. Apple. Peach. Sherbet. Tingly. Juicy. Spicy. Peppery. Dried herbs. Root vegetable earthiness. A sort of flour and pepper texture to it, with a spicy fruity finish of fine length. I loved drinking this wine. A strong recommendation. GARY WALSH, winefront.com

  12. Swinney Riesling 2021
    Swinney Riesling 2021

A whole bunch pressed riesling with time on lees. It’s from the excellent Powderbark vineyard of Swinney. When I see the name Swinney a Victorian era detective comes to mind.

Pretty perfume of jasmine, lemon-lime Splice ice blocks, lemon sorbet, almond, fresh milk, struck flint. Lovely start. Soft in the palate but with a very, very racy core of limey, zesty acidity, so very refreshing in feel with tension and precision on hand. It belts through the palate, a whip crack of zingy tang and sorbet-like mouth-watering pucker. Great regional character, good detail, bright and oh so vibrant. Acid hounds line up! 13. Julg Riesling Trocken 2019
    Julg Riesling Trocken 2019
A pillar of PWS and loved by many, Myles Thomson has chosen this for his staff pick for 2021:

Another year, another riesling. I love the stuff and when I tried this I was instantly in love. A few more bottles at home and the relationship was sealed! The vineyards for the wine sit both in Alsace and Germany with 3rd generation vigneron Johannes Julg at the helm. There is definitely a bit of weight and presence here with a lovely rich and viscous palate that sings with zingy acidity and punchy spice. It opens to peach and nectarine that gives way to pithy, citrus all flecked with savoury mineral notes. This manages to be plump and plush as well wickedly vibrant and super zippy and it’s that push and pull that I find makes this so compelling to drink. It’s not about masses of complexity here but pure, drinking pleasure and it has that in spades! MYLES THOMSON, PWS

A fair amount of weight and power here, slightly earthy, spicy, yellow fruit and lemon zest. It offers crunch and grip, along with a glossy and viscous feel, stony and savoury to close, with solid quinine laced length… GARY WALSH, winefront.com

  14. Schmolzer and Brown Obstgarten K Riesling 2019
Schmolzer and Brown Obstgarten K Riesling 2019
One of our key wine team members, Kay Reynolds has chosen this for his staff pick for 2021, here's why:

Those that know me know how much I love Riesling and this delight by Schmolzer & Brown doesn’t disappoint. Made from the highest altitude Riesling vineyard in Victoria on the Whitlands high plateau of King Valley, it offers an array of complex fruit from 2 pickings which highlight site and variety perfectly. With a good wack of residual sugar left in this wine, necessary to balance the ultra-refreshing natural acidity this cool-climate site offers, the wine is poised, electric and just downright delicious. Thank you to Tessa and Jeremy for making this wine and showcasing such a lovely site in the north-east. KAY REYNOLDS, PWS

  15. Markus Molitor Haus Klosterberg Riesling 1 Liter Dry 2019
Markus Molitor Haus Klosterberg Riesling 1 Liter Dry 2019

The wine of the year, usually causes me a good deal of anxiety. Oh the pressure…. There was a lot of competition this year too. Despite spending so much time locked in the house I still managed to find an excuse to drink well. Or maybe that was my excuse. Chicken or the egg kind of scenario there.
I digress. I looked in to this and I have purchased 7.2% of the total volume of this wine that PWS has sold so far. I don't think many weeks have gone by since this was released that I haven't had one in the fridge. In recent times it has been shared liberally with friends, neighbours and family.
What makes this my wine of the year? First it is 1 litre. That plays a key role in my thinking. Secondly its stupendously good, uber fresh, textural, dry, saline, appealing, brimming with charm, buoyant and playful. So totally delicious that you kind of forget that for a wine of this category the quality is outstanding. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, for the quality that it does deliver this is insane value. Ok, also it's one litre, did I mention that? ROSCOE

  16. Quin Eden Riesling 2018
    Quin Eden Riesling 2018
    100% Riesling, Eden Valley, Australia

Planted in 1971 on a grey, sandy loam with a south easterly aspect and an altitude of 430m this vineyard has survived and flourished with minimal irrigation and inputs over its lifetime.50% of this wine was treated like a red on arrival to the winery with fruit destemmed into picking bins. The juice remained on skins for seven days with pressing occurring once 2 Baume had been consumed by yeast activity. This component was then fermented in stainless steel on full solids and transferred to oak for maturation once complete. The other component was treated traditionally with juice settled after pressing and clear juice racked and inoculated with the selected yeast strain. The two components were blended in old oak for maturation in June with bottling occurring five months later in November 2017. QUIN WINES

Domaine Simha Simla Field Blend White 2016

The 2016 Simla white field blend by Domaine Simha is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Riesling. It is drinking very well right now. A refreshing, aromatic wine with vibrant floral notes and a slight chalkiness. The Chardonnay in the blend provides the depth and complexity this wine so effortlessly displays, and the Riesling offers a lovely line of acidity. Good length, a delicious wine to enjoy with a nice chicken salad. LISA, PWS
