Friends & Family Drinking Dozen – Spring 2021

Prince Wine Store has been running for nearly 20 years now and in that time we have been importing wines directly from France, Italy, Spain and abroad. We go to great lengths to pick only the best of what we see (which is a lot) and bring it to you.

We have forged strong relationships with the producers we import into Australia and consider them friends and confidants in the world of wine.

Closer to home we have forged similar relationships with many of Australia’s greatest producers as well as many of the countries rising stars and young guns of wines. It’s a pretty exciting time for all of us lucky enough to be involved and we wanted to share that with you.

Every quarter this will be updated as we see great new wines, new vintages and the latest and greatest to hit our shores or slide their way across the table. At 15%-20% off or more, this offers exceptional value and delicious drinking.

Don’t forget to check back often to see what the latest version of the Friends and Family Drinking Dozen has in store for you.

  1. Domaine Font de Courtedune Cotes du Rhone Village 2019
Domaine Font de Courtedune Cotes du Rhone Village 2019

Domaine Font de Courtedune – for now, at least – is something of an insider’s secret. With vineyards right next door to Château Rayas, and sharing the same sandy soils, this tiny Châteauneuf-du-Pape estate produces outstanding wines that are a fraction of the price of those of its famous neighbour.

The vineyards have long been owned by the Charrier family, but the fruit was sold to the local co-operative until 1997, when René Charrier established the domaine. Today his children Caroline and Frédéric are in charge.

Everything here is joyously traditional. The old vines (some of which are over 100 years old) are all farmed sustainably, with as little intervention as possible; a philosophy that follows through into the winery. Everything is whole-bunch, fermented and aged in concrete vats, with no oak to be found in the winery at all. They work almost exclusively with Grenache, with just a splash of Mourvèdre, Counoise, Cinsault and Terret Noir to add extra spice and body to the wines.

This is heady and lifted with briary fruits that leap out of the glass followed by fresh cracked pepper corn, amaro spice and fresh orange peel. It's so enticing on the nose and a little air brings out a touch of wild herbs and soft vanilla. The fruits is sweet and with cool black and red fruits hemmed in nicely but fine powdery tannins. There is a touch of oppulence all round but it sits tightly in a neat and focused package.

  2. Domaine Pajot Cotes de Gascogne Blanc 2019
Domaine Pajot Cotes de Gascogne Blanc 2019

The Domaine itself is plonked on the hills overlooking Eauze the capital of Armagnac. Its certified organic and has eighty acres of vines that grow on the gentle hills of sand and fine silt soils. All harvests are done by hand and the domaine does not use any chemical fertilizers or pesticides. This is a dry and textural blend of Colombard, Ugni-Blanc, Sauvignon, and Gros-Manseng.

They have done it again! This is my go to white for summer with a lovely lemony, floral lilt and powdery, perfumed nose. Gentle and bright with clean and crisp flavours of orchard fruits and white nectarine. Its uncomplicated and delicious with clean, crunchy fruits and a zippy, minerally finish. Ridiculous value. MYLES, PWS

  3. Rizzi Barbera d'Alba 2018
    Rizzi Barbera d'Alba 2018
While Cantine Rizzi is better know for their Barbaresco we are especially enamoured with their Barbera. Still made in a traditional style with no new oak and is a slightly more serious style it seriously over-delivers.

Aromas of ripe black plum, black-skinned berry and a whiff of violet that flows on to a soft, juicy palate. There are some smokey, minerally notes that poke their head through the fleshy black raspberry and dark cherry. Definitely a bit of grunt behind it with some pliant fine tannins but all done with class. PWS

  4. Chateau Coupe Roses Fremillant Rose 2019
Chateau Coupe Roses Fremillant Rose 2019
    40% Mourvedre, 30% Cinsault, 20% Grenache, 10% Syrah (Organic)
Limpid peach skin. Nectarine, strawberry and a hint of honeydew melon on the highly perfumed nose. Juicy and seamless in texture, offering juicy red berry and pit fruit flavors that take on a suave floral accent as the wine opens up. Blends weight and finesse with a steady hand and finishes long and energetic, with repeating florality and lingering peachiness. This wine could pull double duty, paired with a wide range of foods or just for drinking by itself. JOSH RAYNOLDS

  5. Roche de Bellene Bellenos Rouge 2018
Roche de Bellene Bellenos Rouge 2018
The Bellenos Cuvée Rouge is primarily from the Beaujolais area in the south of Burgundy, where fruity, mineral-inflected Gamay Noir is grown on granite soils. It is blended with finely structured Pinot Noir from the Côte d’Or in northern Burgundy. The result is a fresh, fruit-forward “Vin de Plaisir” — a deliciously expressive wine for everyday enjoyment.
