November Mixed Dozen 2021 – Mighty Halves

It's back again! That's right, the Mighty, Mighty Half bottle dozen is here. Getting a steady selection of half bottles has been quite the challenge lately but we have put together a fantastic pack full of awesome drinking. What these lack in stature they make up for in punch.

These are wines from the world's greatest producer and winemakers from Tuscany and Piedmonte, Mornington and Adelaide hills through to Chablis, Alsace, and New Zealand. They are perfect for the park and even better with friends so take a look below at this brilliant, little, selection.

This month's selection is looking hot! A few special mentions have to out some this month and while everything is drinking brilliantly there are a couple of drops we are pretty excited about.

From Italy the Querciabella Chianti Classico looks stunning! This phenomenal estate seems to put no foot wrong and 2018 is a pure and somewhat more plush than usual affair. The same has to be said for the 2019 MAssolino Lange Neb which in 2019 seems to have it all; sweet fruit, lush tannins, and wonderfully lifted aromatics in a tight package.

You can never go wrong with a little Rose right about now and the Triennes is one of the most consistent Provence Rose we know. Fresh and bright, with spicy fruit and a layered and textured palate. You will be buying this by the dozen we think.

We couldn’t not put a Chablis in and true to form the William Fevre has delivered again. The quality year-in and year-out from this legendary producer are enviable, to say the least. 2019 has lovely precision and plenty of fruit – a winning combo.

The same has to be said for making sure we have a cracking pinot in the pack and that we do. Moorooduc have been pioneers and are one of the most respected producers on the Peninsula. Their estate is a blend of single vineyards that don’t quite make the cut. Now, in saying that, ‘the cut’ is a pretty tough cut and the quality here is sensational. Sweet spiced laden fruit, a little whole-bunch action, and plenty of slippery vibe on the palate.

Now that is just the start and this month's pack includes wine from Trimbach, Shaw & Smith, Moss Wood, Guigal, Kumeu River, Vissoux and Red Claw. Wow! What a line-up!

  1. Guigal Cotes du Rhone Rouge 2017 375ml
Guigal Cotes du Rhone Rouge 2017 375ml
Saturated ruby. Ripe black raspberry and cherry aromas are complicated by suggestions of cracked pepper, allspice and pungent flowers. Supple, appealingly sweet red and blue fruit preserve flavors gain energy with air, and a bright mineral element adds back-end lift. Supple tannins add shape to a persistent, floral-accented finish, which leaves cherry and spice notes behind. JOSH RAYNOLDS

How Guigal year after year extracts such quality from such volume is astonishing. Famous for paying his growers well above market value for their grapes is probably the key. The fact that he treats this wine with every care and respect that her treats his upper eschelon wines is probably the other. Either way this is one of the most consistent wines to come out of France. PWS

  2. William Fevre Chablis 2019 375ml
    William Fevre Chablis 2019 375ml

A sleeper of the vintage, Fèvre's 2019 Chablis Village opens in the glass with notes of citrus oil, white flowers, crisp green apple and oyster shell. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and chiseled, it's taut and concentrated, with racy acids and a long, chalky finish. Produced from some 40 hectares of vineyards, averaging around 50 years old, this was cropped at yields of 43 hectoliters per hectare. Unusually intense and structured, readers willing to give this cuvée a bit of bottle age will be rewarded. WILLIAM KELLEY, Wine Advocate

From 50 year old vines, with a yield of 46 hl/ha in 2019. Pale lime green. The Domaine version of William Fèvre Chablis offers a classical nose, leaner than, some, yet with intensity on the palate., some of the iodine character is present, but strong fresh citrus fruit too. Exceptional length. Lemongrass acidity. JASPER MORRIS MW

This is aromatically similar to the Champs Royaux with a slightly more pronounced mineral reduction character. There is however better density and intensity to the focused yet opulent medium-bodied flavors that exhibit impressive power for a villages level wine… BURGHOUND

  3. Domaine de Triennes Rose 2020 375ml
Domaine de Triennes Rose 2020 375ml
A winery with great pedigree, Triennes is a joint venture between Jacques Seysses of Domaine Dujac and Aubert de Villaine from Domaine de la Romanee-Conti and is located in the Var, to the East of Aix en Provence.

Farmed organically since 2008, the aim of the estate is to produce wines that speak clearly of the bright sky and diverse terroirs of the region. Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Cinsault, Merlot, Grenache and Viognier provide the raw materials for their stunning range of wines from their pale, savoury rose through to the characterful rich reds for which Provence has become famous.

We've said it before but year after year this is always such a lovely bottling. Hints of wild strawberry, a touch of red currant and fresh cut peach all jostle in an airy and fragrant nose. Not too heavy, not too light it has lovely plush fruit under-pinned by gentle acidity. It would be a chameleon on the table pairing with so many foods. PWS

  4. Massolino Langhe Nebbiolo 2019 375ml
    Massolino Langhe Nebbiolo 2019 375ml

This wine just gets better and better. Early vintages of the Nebbiolo were sourced exclusively from Massolino's younger vines in Serralunga from three different sites - a declassified Barolo if you like.

The blend is roughly one-third from each terroir, and there's little doubt the sum of these three sites has bought even more brightness and early drinking appeal to what was already an outstanding Langhe Nebbiolo. Like all Massolino Nebbiolo, it was aged in large Slavonian oak casks (although the Langhe only spends 15 months in wood, as compared to 24-plus months for the Barolo wines).

From a classical vintage that spotlighted perfume, purity and freshness, this is a strikingly pretty wine: wonderfully vibrant and perfumed with great acidity and energy and aromas and flavours that suggest rose, cranberry, blackberry and all kinds of spice. Super drinking already. PWS

  5. Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay 2020 375ml
Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay 2020 375ml
Lightly but not excessively reductive on the nose. Already quite expansive on the nose with beautiful impact on the palate: citrus, blossom and really neat acidity without much astringency. Elegant and racy – almost lightweight on the mid palate and then it is impressively persistent. A thorough delight already. JANCIS ROBINSON

We love the wines at Kumeu River. This is one of the best 'new world' Chardonnay producers that remains a surprising secret for many a Chardonnay lover. The estate is a blend of several of the sites worked by Kumeu and always has a softer more delicate air then some of the more powerful single vineyard bottlings. The 2020 is another wonderful effort. 6. Shaw & Smith Shiraz 2017 375ml
    Shaw & Smith Shiraz 2017 375ml

It’s from such an unusual/cold/late season that shiraz was picked four weeks later than average.

It’s a peppery, twiggy, bunchy shiraz. It smells, feels and tastes like the result of a cool season. This wine will split drinkers down the middle. It’s smoky, herbal, berried, smooth-skinned and stringy at once. It both walks the tightrope and is one. There are menthol, alpine herb, walnut and peppercorn characters here in abundance. There are also substantial ropes of well-placed tannin. It’s a medium-bodied wine with a great deal to say. CAMMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

What can we say about this wonderful producer? Nothing that hasn't already been said. The consistency and quality is really quite astonishing and with Adama Wadawitz at the winemaking helm this a trend that will continue its upward trajectory. Their secret has been to continually improve and tweak the operations and that shows in every bottle. One of Australia's great estates. PWS

  7. Moorooduc Estate Pinot Noir 2020 375ml
Moorooduc Estate Pinot Noir 2020 375ml
A blend of the Mcintyre, Robinson and Garden vineyards that receives all the care attention of the single vineyard bottlings. A bit of dark cherry and heady spice with a touch of pretty florals that linger gently. A bit of French oak and some whole bunch add some slippery texture and a whole of class. A peppery, savoury touch on the palate with some pretty oak framing the plush fruit. Fantastic stuff.
We have always had great relationship with the Mcintyre family and Kate in particular who we have collaborated with on numerous projects. They are pioneers and standard bearers for the Mornington Peninsula. The wines from top to bottom are all sensational and we are proud to call them our friends. PWS

Our philosophy in everything we do is to make the most of top quality ingredients. Intensive, hands-on care in the vineyard, with minimal use of chemicals, produces the best possible fruit for our wines. Wild yeast ferments and minimal intervention winemaking, with a nod to traditional Burgundian techniques, allow our wines to express their site specificity, or terroir. MOOROODUC

  8. Querciabella Chianti Classico 2018 375ml
    Querciabella Chianti Classico 2018 375ml
The 2018 Chianti Classico is classy, polished and exceptionally beautiful. Like so many wines in 2018, the Chianti Classico is aromatic and gracious in feel, more finesse than power. Silky tannins wrap around a core of bright Sangiovese fruit. From start to finish, the 2018 is all class. ANTONIO GALLONI

This remarkable estate is the life-long passion of Sebastiano Cossia Costiglioni and before him his father, Guiseppe, who planted the first vines at the estate as a hobby in the early 1970's. Giacomo Tacchis and Guido di Santi were bought on in the formative years as winemaking consultants and directed the estate to biodynamics.

Today the estate's technical direction is overseen by another of Italy's greatest winemaking talents in Luca Currado of famed Piemontese producer, Vietti, while day-to-day running of the estate's vineyards and winemaking is handled by a passionate team led by Dales D'Allesandro and Manfred Ing. New investment in the cellars over the past years will also continue to push the quality of the wines to new levels and maintain Querciabella at the top of the Chianti tree. PWS

  9. Trimbach Reserve Riesling 2018 375ml
    Trimbach Reserve Riesling 2018 375ml
Trimbach is at the summit of dry white winemaking. CLIVE COATEDS M.W.

With viticultural origins going back to 1626 this family owned estate produces some of the finest wines not only of Alsace, but indeed the entire world of wine. Around the villages of Ribeauvillé and Hunawihr, the Trimbach family owns 57 hectares of vineyards from some of the most famed sites in the region.

The reserve wines are sourced from rigorously selected grapes grown in and around Ribeauville and surrounding villages. They are fermented dry and text book example of classic Alsace fair.

Quince, pear and apple with a touch of mandarin open to an exotic and layered nose. There is a touch of lime zest and white pepper folded into the soft fruits. The clean pristine fruit is sliced down the middle of the palate with a racy, tight quartz-mineral core. On the close the palate shifts toward more tropical notes and a sense of opulence that is kept in check by a dry and mineral finish. PWS

  10. Red Claw by Yabby Lake Pinot Gris 2018 375ml
Red Claw by Yabby Lake Pinot Gris 2018 375ml

Handpicked fruit was whole bunch pressed into tank. After cold settling overnight, juice was racked to another tank for fermentation. Parcels left on yeast lees until July 2016 to gain mouth feel and complexity, then bottled. This Red Claw Pinot Gris has lovely freshness, lifted floral aromas and bright fruit flavours. Showing a hint of nashi pear, subtle spice and a long, finely textured palate. YABBY LAKE

Very light yellow, bright colour, with a sweetly fragrant, light and grapy aroma, some nectarine, stone fruit notes. The wine is light-bodied and dry, delicate and straightforward, with a cleansing, appetising dryness to finish. It's very much a grigio style. The Real Review

    Moss Wood Amy's Vineyard Cabernet 2019 375ml

5/13/7/5% cabernet sauvignon/merlot/malbec/petit verdot. Hand picked, matured for 14 months in seasoned French oak. The 2019 vintage in Margaret River was cool and wet, producing wines of concentrated, high aroma and vibrancy. This is all of that, with layers of nuance on the palate. It is very restrained and long; unfurling, petal by petal, rather than revealing itself all at once. Elegant and classy to the very end. A ripper. Buy it and cellar it with confidence, or drink its beauty tonight – both viable options. ERIK LARKIN, James Halliday

  12. Pierre Marie Chermette Beaujolais Les Griottes Beaujolais 2019 375ml
Pierre Marie Chermette Beaujolais Les Griottes Beaujolais 2019 375ml

crewcap. This Beaujolais cherrybomb is drawn from 20- to 40-year-old vines grown on dark, granite soils around the Chermette homestead in Saint-Vérand (southern Beaujolais). The winemaking here has remained unchanged for decades, with traditional whole-bunch, semi-carbonic ferment in concrete tanks and then maturation in tank and ancient oak casks still the order of the day.

As opposed to his age-worthy Crus from Moulin-a-Vent, Fleurie, et al, Chermette's aim here is to produce something light-bodied and cherry-fruited with reach-for-another-glass charm--something the juicy-crunchy 2019 nails with ease. From one of the region's great addresses, this is a punchy and buoyant red that goes down dangerously easily. PWS

Pale peach skin color. Fresh citrus fruits, red berries and a hint of nectarine on the incisive, mineral-accented nose. Silky and focused on the palate, offering light-bodied strawberry, tangerine and succulent herb flavors. Finishes smooth and subtly sweet, with a repeating red berry note and good tenacity.
