October Mixed Dozen 2021 - Spring Drinking
October Mixed Dozen 2021 – Spring Drinking
Another seasonal mixed dozen means we have done all the hard work making sure we have the perfect selection of wine to match the warmer days and temperate nights ahead.
It’s a pretty simple formula in the end - it's gotta be delicious and it’s gotta be great value. But don’t worry, simple doesn’t mean we don’t take the selection seriously. In the end, this really was such a joy to put together and has an eclectic and wonderful mix of sparkling, white, rose and, mid-weight reds.
There is a ton of fun wines you don’t need to take too seriously as well as a bunch of absolute gems from across the world of wine.

De Bortoli Villages Tempranillo Touriga 201915% whole bunch, 6 months in 500L French oak puncheons (5% new). 53/42/5%/tempranillo/touriga/shiraz. Vegan/vegetarian friendly. Plenty of Spanish-Portuguese love happening here with the vivacious tempranillo in a meeting of minds with touriga. Plush fruit meets firm tannins with dark cherries, red licorice, full spice. It's full-on flavour is whipped into a pretty tight tannic mould on the palate. JENI PORT, JamesHalliday.com2019Shiraz GrenacheAustralia506
Des Grande Esperances Java Rouge 2018This is a cracking Blend of gamay 60% malbec 20% and cabernet Franc 20% made by the team at Domaines de Grande Esperances. They are geared towards quality production and organic farming base in the Loire Valley and working with about 24 hectares of land and 8 varietals. These are fun and delicious wines that don't take themselves to seriously but still over-deliver in spades.
A lifted fruit punch of red fruits - think strawberry, raspberry, sour cherry and red currant that leap out of the glass. A wild spicy note carries the bold fruit turning round into lovely savoury peppery sprinkles. There is a light lick of tannin that keeps this all-in check. Yum!

Rizzi Barbera d'Alba 2018While Cantine Rizzi is better know for their Barbaresco we are especially enamoured with their Barbera. Still made in a traditional style with no new oak and is a slightly more serious style it seriously over-delivers.
Aromas of ripe black plum, black-skinned berry and a whiff of violet that flows on to a soft, juicy palate. There are some smokey, minerally notes that poke their head through the fleshy black raspberry and dark cherry. Definitely a bit of grunt behind it with some pliant fine tannins but all done with class. PWS

Bondar Rose 2021"There must be a bit of magic behind Bondar. All of the wines have an ethereal quality" JANE FAULKNER, Halliday Wine Companion
We couldn't agree more. There does seem to be a little bit of magic going on behind the scenes here. Certainly great vineyards play their part here but a lot has to be said for what Andre Bondar is doing with the wines. Chat with him and he always reveals a beautfiully considered and throughful approach to wine making that shines through.
Haliday called the 2021 one of Australia's finest rose and we reckon the 2021 is just as good. 100% grenache, this is a bright, delicate and aromatic rose that presents with a pale colour but lacks nothing on flavour or palate impact. Wild strawberry and red current fruit are flecked with Provencal herbs and an light orange rind twist. Its lithe and lifted but with plenty of succulent fruit. This is a wonderful rose that you will not be able to put down.

Domaine Vin de Savoie Dupasquier Jacquere 2017Domaine Dupasquier in the appropriately-named hamlet of Aimavigne has long been viewed as the benchmark for Altesse from the Marestel slopes, which offer a panorama awesome in its own way even for someone familiar with far steeper sites in the Valais, lower Mosel, or Douro. Dupasquiers' old vines in this once-fabled site do indeed nearly always give something impressive as well as age-worthy. DAVID SCHILDNECHT, eRobertParker.com
The domaine makes a number of wines from in and around the Savoy region and this has become a bit of staff favourite over the years. Jacquere is the variety and is often made to make simple wines but in the hands of Dupasqiuer takes on a little more interest and depth.
Soft and supple in its delivery with gentle fruit and white pepper on the nose that leads into a minerally and lightly textured line on the palate. A bit of time on lees gives a gentle grip and adds a little something extra to the wine.

Ricca Terra Bronco Buster White 2020
This crazy and delicious blend from vermentino, fiano, greco and arinto grapes is produced by Ashley Ratcliff and family from the Ricca Terra farms of Riverland, South Australia.
There is a lovely chalky and green melon that greets you on the nose that flows into succulent nashi pear and green tree fruits. It’s a bit like trying to catch wind with you hand as all the spicy fruit and mineral laden falvours and aromas rush around your senses. Crisp and dry with lip-smacking fruit and refreshing acidity that makes you want for more. So good!! PWS2020White BlendAustralia474$20.00
Le Moss Frizzante IGTThis is slightly cloudy Glera sparkling wine from the Piave region in Italy. Basically it's a Prosecco as it is made from all glera grapes but made in a pet-nat style and unfiltered so cannot legally call itself Prosecco. But honestly why would you care? This is such a fun wine to drink. We all screamed "picnic wine!" when we tried it. Hell yeah!
Wild yeast fermented with natural carbonation from secondary ferment in bottle there is lilting aroma of bread crust, Acacia flowers, apple, lemon & grapefruit pithiness. Extremely fresh with some chalky texture that reminds a bit of great scrumpy cider. Bone dry, totally fresh and totally delicious. Yum!
Monteguelfo Chianti DOCG 2020Wow! This was such a wonderful surprise and terrific value Chianti from the estates of Andrea Cecchi. Made from 90% Sangiovese and 10% Colorino, the wine does not see any oak and has a tradiotional leaning and plenty of character, particularly for a wine at this price. The Cecchi family has 125 years of winemaking history and have some excellent vineyards at their disposal.
It's a wonderfully vibrant & fresh expression of sangiovese that retains its fleshy and soft fruits throughout with a pillowy texture. Hints of black cherry and wild forest fruits with a touch of leather and some savoury dried herbs.

Fattori Soave 2020
Garganega: 100 %, a small part of which from late harvest.
Fermented and matured in stainless steel vats.
Intense straw yellow. Floral hints of jasmine and wisteria. Towards the end, a sensation of nuts. A fresh core of citrus and white apple fruit aromas.. The bouquet is enhanced by subtle hints of sage and nettle, while the palate is fresh, crisp and gently mineral textured. Elegant and round with a balanced taste and freshness with hints of citrus fruit. Ideal with fish and vegetable risottos.2010GarganegaItaly499
Onannon Mornington Pinot Noir 2019Onannon has been sourcing premium Mornington and Gippsland fruit under the direction of the terrible trio of Will Byron, Sam Middleton and Kasper Hermann. The trio met whilst working at Coldstream Hills many years ago. Will is now the chief winemaker at Stonier in Mornington Peninsula, Sam has taken over winemaking duties at his iconic family estate, Mount Mary in the Yarra Valley where he and Kaspar have worked for years.
This wine is a blend of three vineyards. Our original Red Hill site, a younger site in Flinders and a site in Sommers. The fruit from all sites is handpicked with a little of the Red Hill portion going in as whole bunch. There is a light touch of oak aging, wild ferments and minimal sulphur.
This is up-front and delicious made in an open and generous style. The pedigree of the winemaking shines through this is class all the way. The warm, ripe fruits are perfectly pitched with a touch of whole bunch spice and whisps of wild, leafy undergrowth that counter the warm fruit nicely. Its laid-back as you taste but gently unfurls some subtle and complex savoury notes. This is understated in the nicest way but has everything you want in a Mornington pinot. No brainer.

Gentle Folk Vin de Sofa Red 2021Gareth and Rainto Belton are the faces behind the Gentle Folk label based out of the Basket ranges in the Adelaide Hills. Gareth farms their three vineyards working organically and shying away from additions as much as possible in the winery.
The Vin de Sofa is a pun on the French wine term Vin de Soif - an easy drinking, don't think too hard and just enjoy the wine term. Each vintage the wine changes depending on season and whims.
This year is a blend of Adelaide Hills vineyards, with pinot noir bunches in neutral French barriques, pinot gris pressed into stainless steel, and syrah and sangiovese destemmed and left on skins.
Its open and sweetly perfumed with spicy red fruits and black raspberry wrapped in wild meadow herbs and dry bay. Its soft and juicy in the mouth with succulent fruit. The sangiovese adds a lovely drop of savoury tannin that gently lines the pallet and carries it along giving a mouth-watering and more-ish edge to the wine. You could chill it lightly if you were so inclined but whatever way you have it, it is straight-up delicious.

Racine Picpoul de Pinet 2019Picpoul from the coastal reaches of the Mediterranean has become in recent years the 'go to wine' in France for Oysters, shell fish and indeed all fish and with good reason as besides having that dry bite and the acidity that goes with it, it also has good body and underlying fruit flavours. I love it - and particularly as it is made by my good fried Francois Chamboissier who is both a talented winemaker and a great gourmet living in a stunning small village in southern France. What a life! The wine is a treat. Racy freshness, ripe citrus fruit, and seafood-friendly purity. The palate has a lovely texture, with many layers of flavour and a notable length to the finish.
"The 2019 Racine Picpoul de Pinet is spot on. Crisp, clean and lively, it makes the perfect springtime aperitif and, blessed with a screwcap, can be opened in a trice whenever thirst strikes.
