October Premium 6-pack 2021 – Spring Reds

This is always a fun little pack to put together and one we think is going to tick all the boxes for a bit of Spring drinking. Here is the brief: medium-bodied and light reds, wines that have a bit of weight and pull to them but remain light on their feet without sacrificing any flavour.

We were actually spoilt for choice this year and probably could have made several versions of this pack. More and more we are seeing reds with wonderful freshness and vibrancy that are packed full of up-front fruit, that doesn't lack in structure or texture but are neither heavy nor overly simple.

These are the perfect foil for a little bit of milder Spring weather that is finally starting to turn our way.

PRODUCTS in this offer

  1. Dirupi Rosso di Valtellina Ole 2018
Dirupi Rosso di Valtellina Ole 2018
Heady scents of alpine herbs, char, red cherry and menthol. Succulent, sour cherry, cranberry, gummy tannin and more of the asphalt and then some dark, earthy character rolling tight and compact. Very fresh and pure-feeling with strong sense of regional character. (93) MIKE BENNIE, www.winefront.com.au

There's plenty to like here for both young modern drinkers who enjoy fresh, lightly styled reds, as well as nebbiolophiles who dig the aromatics of Nothern Italy's most prized grape. It has a beautiful ruby red hue and upon first whiff throws up plenty of bright new season strawberry, florals aplenty and a pinch of zesty spice. It's light and vivacious with just a sprinkling of powdery fine tannins. If you are drinking this in warmer weather, which I would highly recommend, keep it on the cooler side and serve with BBQ snags and charcoal chicken. Alex D
  2. La Dama Vini Valpoilicella Classico Ripasso Superiore 2017
La Dama Vini Valpoilicella Classico Ripasso Superiore 2017
Established by Gabriele and Miriam Dalcanele in 2006, La Dama represents the new breed of winemakers in the region. Modern, fresh yet compelling wines coaxed from organically farmed vineyards in the fabled commune of Negrar, home to some of the great names including the legendary Giuseppe Quintarelli.

Working only with the native varieties of Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and Molinara, the 10 hectares of vineyards are all hand-picked with oak influence kept to a minimum in order to ensure the vineyard speaks for itself in the glass.

This is light on its feet compared to some other Superiore style wines of the regions and is so much better for it. Pure, bright with a lovely sparkle to the concentrated black and red fruits and that gentle lifted spice that is so appealing. There is still a lovely richness to the palate that come from the Ripasso treatment and it adds a lovely bit of depth and plushness that is so pleasing. PWS
    Corvina, Molinara, Rodinella
  3. Telmo Rodriguez Gaba do Xil Mencia 2018
Telmo Rodriguez Gaba do Xil Mencia 2018
The entry-level red 2018 Gaba do Xil Tinto is mostly Mencía with some other grapes from the mixed plantings in old vineyards. It fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel, where it matured for 12 months before bottling. This was a cooler vintage and went back to harvests from yesteryear. It was not an easy year, but the most successful wines are going to have good freshness. Here, I see more complexity than in the previous vintage; this is less varietal and goes more in the direction of the single-vineyard reds. There is ripeness but without excess, with herbal and spicy aromas and a notable finish. LUIS GUTIERREZ, RobertParker.com

  4. Bondar Rayner Vineyard Grenache 2020
    Bondar Rayner Vineyard Grenache 2020

I like a couple of slices of jamon Iberico before tasting Grenache, which is what I’ve just done.

Spicy, perfumed, hazelnut and orange zest, smoky meaty edges, red fruits and dried herbs. It’s medium-bodied, fine and firm tannin grip with spiced strawberry and pomegranate, fresh and alive, kind of succulent, yet quite serious. It pulses with energy and runs long and savoury, so much interest, detail, and complexity here. Outstanding. I’d say it’s the best Grenache I’ve tasted from Bondar. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

  5. Domaine de l’Aste Santenay Rouge 2019
Domaine de l’Aste Santenay Rouge 2019

'One of Santenay's emerging talents...' WILLIAM KELLEY, robertparker.com

'Already one of the best addresses in Santenay!' BILL NANSON, burgundyreport.com.au

Village wine, 2 plots between Santenay and Chassagne. All hand picked and barrel aged.

Winemaker David Moreau states 'it has depth, black fruit and spices, and a hint of fresh oak. It's structured with complex mouthfeel.'

'Moreau's wines come highly recommended. I was smitten by the purity of fruit, fineness of tannins and their charm. Whilst they might not necessarily be wines of enormous longevity, I am not sure how much that matters when they have so much to offer in their youth (though that said, if I had a case I'd keep six bottles back to see how their age.) If you have read this producer introduction up to this final sentence, then the next thing you should do is pick up the telephone or click a mouse and buy these wines.' NEAL MARTIN, vinous.com

    Pinot noir
  6. Ngeringa Syrah 2019
    Ngeringa Syrah 2019
Savoury notes over red berry fruit character. Tobacco, turned earth, dried leaves, sour cherry, raspberry going on. A suppleness in texture, mouth-filling and good, generous but fresh with more of that savouriness and earthy character of the perfume now spiked through dark cherry and plummy fruit. Tannins weave, acidity perks, it’s a fancy feeling, excellent wine. MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Front
