  1. Knoll Gruner Veltliner Loibner Federspiel 2020
Knoll Gruner Veltliner Loibner Federspiel 2020
Yellow fruit with a whiff of fennel and radish spiciness. It has a fleshy feel and powdery texture, bright acidity, lemon zest, a nutty and saline character, a hit of pepper, and a gently bitter finish of excellent length. Weighty, but still kind of light on its feet. Always a lovely drink, and so it is in 2020. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front August 2021

2020 Emmerich Knoll Grüner Veltliner Loibner Federspiel is classified as Ortswein (village wine) and comes from various sites around the family home.

The vines are generally planted on flat land with an elevation of about 200m. The soils include the floodplain, with sand on Danube gravel. Vines are 25 years old on average ranging from 5 to 45 years.

100% hand harvest, with no destemming and pressed with a touch of skin contact. Fermentation takes place in large cask and stainless-steel tanks litres, depending on the batch quality. A combo of native and cultured yeast with wine aged on lees for a minimum of four months, with no bâtonnage.

  2. Pieropan Calvarino 2019
    Pieropan Calvarino 2019
This cru, made from 70% Garganega and 30% Trebbiano grown on volcanic soil, produces a refined and elegant Soave with mineral driven fruit and a chalkiness reminiscent of fine Chablis. The crisp fruit (green apple, citrus and stone fruit) preludes a fine and complex palate with piercing clarity and a long finish. First made in 1971, Calvarino has a track record of a long cellar life, up to 15 years, in the finest vintages. TREMBATH & TAYLOR

  3. Koerner Gullyview Riesling 2020
    Koerner Gullyview Riesling 2020

Very limestone, southerly aspect. Ceramic and stainless steel vessels, natural ferment, no filter, no fine, on lees for hang time.

Tangy but plush, juicy and concentrated with a zing of tart acidity through the core. Minerally, powdery texture, low key flavours, lime, green apple, a bit of mint. Good feel here, complex, intense, still refreshing but quite a mouthful. MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Front

  4. Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Roche Calcaire 2018
Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Roche Calcaire 2018
A very succulent gewurz with tons of yellow fruit, as well as rose aromas, then some spice joins the picture as it aerates in the glass. At once very creamy, frankly off-dry yet very fresh on the palate, this is delightful now. Drink now, either by itself or with mature cheese. STUART PIGOTT

Flint, smoke, chalk and cream all appear in brief flashes on the nose of this wine. The palate still holds some residual carbon dioxide but then slowly reveals serene and ripe but bright pear fruit at its core. Freshness takes its cue from a pithy texture and lends shape to this bold but fresh, bone-dry wine. WINE ENTHUSIAST

This wine is mostly the second wine of Pinot-Gris from the Clos Windsbuhl. Sometimes, small volumes of other single vineyards (Heimbourg and Clos Jebsal) can be used in addition, depending on vineyard selection we are doing. The old vines of Pinot-Gris in the Windsbuhl were planted in the 1960s or earlier. When we acquired the Clos in 1987, some vines needed to be pulled out (wrong grape or rootstock) and were replaced partly with some Pinot-Gris between 1988 and 1992. These 'younger' vines are not used in the Clos Windsbuhl and all go into this cuvée. However, the vineyard signature is well present: good acidity, elegant racy palate…. but also a tendency to keep residual sweetness if the ripeness goes just slightly too high. It is therefore very important to pick at the right moment, and Pinot-Gris can evolve very quickly, which was done perfectly in 2018. The wine was able to ferment dry from very healthy grapes.

Clear yellow colour. There is an immediate sense of ripe white fruits (peach, pears) and citrus aromas on the nose, with an almost 'Riesling like' character. The palate is refined, elegant and the dry finish adds to the complexity of the wine. Good length, medium power, so drinkable! It really is a very convincing Pinot-Gris and a style we would like to achieve exactly like this every year! ZIND HUMBRECHT

Bottling date: 1/2020; Alcohol: 13.4° alc; Residual sweetness: 4.6 g/l; Total Acidity 3.4 g/l H2SO4 (5.2 g/l Tartaric), pH: 3.4, Yields: 60 hl/ha; Optimum drinking period: 2023-2030; Average age of the vines: 28 years; Terroir: Muschelkalk; Indice 1.

  5. Castro Martin Sobre Lias Raw Power Albarino 2019
Castro Martin Sobre Lias Raw Power Albarino 2019
The wines here grow in pure granitic sands, and are 100% Albariño. Castro Martín is still owned and run by the founding family; the Bodega's history can be traced back as far as 1887. The philosophy at Castro Martín is simple: to make the best quality wine possible at the most competitive price. The team are constantly re-examining their work, improving and including innovative techniques where possible, whilst still respecting the tradition of the region.

This 'cuvee' is bottled unfiltered which adds (retains) a layer of energy, an extra dash of vibrancy and texture.

Beautiful savoury pear, with yellowed straw and apple cider on the nose, and CM's trademark smooth-fruited journey in the mouth. Almost certainly the most savoury CM yet, it is a little richer than usual, but the full-fruitedness is textural rather than fruity as such, with apple-skin fruit tannins tucking everything in and the lees ageing for savoury mouthfeel. Pear-apple 'two fruits' plus nectar florals and super texture, hmmm ... it's a dead-set beaut!
