Ape means "bee" in Italian and maybe it is the power of suggestion, but I taste a lot of honey on the bouquet here. The 2016 Fiano di Avellino Ape opens to a deep, off-gold color and the semblance of thick concentration. The wine delivers ample beeswax and honey that gives the bouquet a rather heavy and rich personality. Indeed, that concentration is almost too much in my opinion. Thick aromas of dried apricot and peach are followed by exotic spice and even a touch of cinnamon. MONICA LARNER

This comes from Chianche in Montefalcione. Destemmed and fermented on the skins at a very low temperature with 6 months on fine lees. It offers a myriad of sensations with hints of white flowers, pear, the unmistakable touch of toasted hazelnut. There is some nice phenolic grip on the palate from the time on skins and the rich fruit is kept in check finishing on a racy note.
