Camensac

"Good value Bordeaux" could be an oxymoron of sorts yet Château de Camensac is a wine that can sometimes punch well above its weight and in vintages such as the 2000, prove to be unbeatable value for money. In 1965 it was rescued by the Forner brothers, that de Camensac began its slow recovery towards the healthy status that is enjoys this day. They appointed Professor Emile Peynaud to guide and advise upon its recovery, which included replanting 85 hectares of vineyard and a complete overhaul and modernization of the chai. The estate is located in the commune of Saint-Laurent-Médoc atop a deep gravel croupe that enhances drainage. The vineyard itself covers 65 hectares and is planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, with a vine-density of 10,000 per hectare and an average vine age of 35 years. Certainly these days Château de Camensac deserves its inclusion as a Grand Cru and offers a great introduction to Bordeaux without the prohibitive price-tag. ROBERT PARKER
