De Bortoli Wines-**USE DE BORTOLI WINES P/L**

The quality arm of the bustling De Bortoli group, run by Leanne De Bortoli and husband Steve Webber, ex-Lindemans winemaker. The top label (De Bortoli),the second (Gulf Station) and the third label (Windy Peak) offer wines of consistently good quality and excellent value the complex Chardonnay and the Pinot Noirs are usually of outstanding quality. The volume of production, by many times the largest in the Yarra Valley, simply underlines the quality/value for money ratio of the wines. This arm of the business has vineyards in the Yarra and King valleys. Steve retired as chairman of judges at the Melbourne Wine Show in 2011, having made many far-sighted changes to the schedule. De Bortoli Wines is a third generation family wine company established by Vittorio and Giuseppina De Bortoli in 1928. The couple emigrated to Australia from Northern Italy, from mountain villages at the foothills of the Italian Alps, near the historic town of Asolo.

Their son, the energetic and dynamic Deen De Bortoli, (b 1936 – d 2003) expanded and consolidated the business created by his parents. Deen's children established De Bortoli's reputation for premium wine including icon dessert wine Noble One and the Yarra Valley wines.

Italian family values passed down from Vittorio remain core values, there is a culture of hard work, generosity of spirit and of sharing good food, good wine and good times with family and friends.

Below is a video of the De Bortoli family taken as part of the Australia's First Families of Wine joint marketing initiative which involves some of Australia's oldest and most respected wine families. --www.debortoli.com.au

  1. De Bortoli Botrytis Semillon Florence Broadhurst 2016 375mL
De Bortoli Botrytis Semillon Florence Broadhurst 2016 375mL
Our manager Effie Ross has chosen this for her staff pick for 2021, here's why:

This delightful sticky is intended as an approachable, every-day drinking cousin of the treasured national classic, De Bortoli Noble 1. It represents incredible bang for buck and comes ready to drink in a striking 375ml bottle that showcases a design by the late Australian artist Florence Broadhurst. Alluring aromatics of rich ripe oranges, yellow peaches, earl-grey tea, toffee apples, cut hay, and spiced apricot leap out of the glass. It’s pleasantly full-bodied and sugar sweet which is cut nicely with fresh lemon-lime acidity. The flavour carries long on the palate and develops in the glass. This is a complex and well-structured sweet wine, and an excellent example of Riverina botrytis-Semillon. Serve this with cheese, pavlova, or Christmas cake and custard. Recommended reading material includes the history of Australia’s Riverina wine region, or the fascinating and tragic life and work of Florence Broadhurst. EFFIE ROSS, PWS

  2. Vinoque Fiano e Greco 2018
    Vinoque Fiano e Greco 2018

If you haven't looked at some of the Vinoque range from De Bortoli, do yourself a favour. Steve Webber uses this label to produce some incredible value wines and fantastic little blends. We carry a few but this one always seems to end up floor stacked somewhere in the store. PWS

51/49%/fiano/greco Hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed to used French casks for fermentation. Light straw. Rockpool, saline, lemon peel. Fermentation in old French casks has let loose some exotic flavours of figs, cut pear and honey. A touch of lemon drop confection brings these two Italian grapes together on the finish. 4. The Wizardry Grenache Rouge 2019
    The Wizardry Grenache Rouge 2019

Steve Webber is a man of many talents and passions. One of his is Grenache from upper Heathcote. He loves it so much he has established a brand around promoting the variety in the region. This is the 3rd vintage and of the wines and we are thoroughly convinced, not just because Steve stands behind, but because the wine is that good. The future is bright and so is this wine. PWS

This red delight reflects the name with definitely some magic in its makeup, dark cherry aromatics to start, with ripe but not jammy flavours as you sip in medium to fuller-bodied juicy fruits offsetting a fine, sandy tannin feel. There’s a lot going on for the price – look out for specials and keep an eye on it as the styling unfolds over the next few years. HALLIDAY MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER 2020

  5. De Bortoli Villages Pinot Noir 2019
De Bortoli Villages Pinot Noir 2019

The idea of a Villages blend is to create attractive and appealing wine from different villages within the Yarra Valley. Chardonnay, Sauvignon and Pinot Noir are selected from best growers along with and Grenache chosen from Heathcote.

How Steve Webber and his team manage to punch out such great wines, accross the whole ranged with this value is always a surprise to us.

Another stellar effort and effortlessly is the key word here. Floral and bright with a serious tone to the fruit that is dialled in with a fresh Autumnal leaf that sits gently in the background. Softly sweet fruit, fresh and clean with a little x-factor that keeps you coming back for more. PWS

  6. Riorret Lusatia Park Vineyard Chardonnay 2017
Riorret Lusatia Park Vineyard Chardonnay 2017
Lusatia Park is in the Upper Yarra, and the cooler climate - coupled with the modest alcohol - led to the decision to take the wine through mlf. It certainly hasn't stripped the elegance or fresh, juicy/limey acidity of this lovely chardonnay. The Yarra Valley length of flavour is on full display, oak (obviously) simply a means to an end. 7. De Bortoli Lusatia Chardonnay 2018
    De Bortoli Lusatia Chardonnay 2018
A bit like a Ferrari 812 Superfast that can go from zero to 100 in 2.9 seconds, this chardonnay seems to race across the palate, leaving a trail of flavour in its wake. It's pure acidity driving this. Of course there's more in the midst: the citrus, the flint and the smidge of nougatine. A complex, fantastic wine. JANE FAULKNER, winecompanion.com
