Fighting Gully Road

Mark Walpole and partner Carolyn De Poi began the development of their Aquila Audax Vineyard in 1997. It is situated between 530m and 580m above sea level: the upper-eastern slopes are planted to pinot noir and the warmer western slopes to cabernet sauvignon; there are also small quantities of shiraz, tempranillo, sangiovese and merlot. JAMES HALLIDAY

Mark Walpole is a Victorian wine industry legend and perhaps the most respected viticulturalist in the state (backed up by winning the prestigious Gourmet Wine Traveller Viticulturalist of the Year in 2017). He and Adrian Rodda work hand in hand on their projects with Mark heading up the vineyard side of things (obviously) while the extremely talented Adrian runs their winery. These are some of the more expressive and exciting wines going around and everyone should get on board. ROSCOE

  1. Fighting Gully Road Sangiovese La Longa 2017
Fighting Gully Road Sangiovese La Longa 2017
The second release in the reserve Black Label range; what sets it apart is the overall restraint, especially in ripeness and the wine's underlying tension. Excellent fruit but more a savoury defined wine: earthy, new leather, oak spice, black cherries and pips, Italian bitter herbs, steely and energetic with precision tannins. This is outstanding Australian sangiovese. (97) JANE FAULKNER, James Halliday's Wine Companion

Fighting Gully Road Mornginton Peninsula Pinot Noir 2020

We have always felt like the wines of FGR are a bit of an unsung hero in the region. Mark Walpole, legendary viticulturalist has long seen the incredible potential of Beechworth and it shows in his ever-consistent range. Unfortunately with the devastating fires of 2020, Mark was left with no fruit from his own vineyards so he travelled far and wide to secure quality fruit to keep the winery busy.

The 2020 Pinot Noir was sourced from three different vineyard in the Mornington Peninsula. All MV6 the wine was 1/3 100% whole bunch ferment and 2/3 destemmed ferment. The subsequent wine was aged for 12 months in 1/4 new French oak puncheons. The mid palate exhibits ripe berry fruits with a fine line of acidity and tannins running throughout. Fine and delicious with that lovely warm Peninsula mid-palate fruit in a lovely focused but generous style. PWS
