Franz Haas

Franz Haas has been exploiting the spectacular Alpine vineyards of the Alto Adige (formerly known as the Sud-Tirol) since 1880 and today stand as one the region's greatest producer. The current head and third generation of Franz Haas's to run the estate is one of the most fastidious and perfectionist winemakers in Italy and his legendary attention to detail extends to all areas of production.

Haas own 30 hectares of their own vineyards in varying micro-climates (ranging to altitudes of 1000 metres) and aspects and also buys grapes from other producers in the region to supplement supply and to get the best possible expression from a particular variety. The extremes of the topography also create unique conditions for growing grapes; freezing winters, hot summers tempered by moderating breezes from Lake Garda, and large temperature swings between day and night conspire to imbue the wines with a purity, crispness and complexity. In addition varieties like pinot bianco that can be a fairly neutral animal in other regions and others hands become wonderfully focussed and dare we say, multi-faceted. Although the range is peppered with exceptional examples of many of the regional varieties perhaps the most interesting is the white blend Manna. This blend of Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon and Traminer is the elephant on the tightrope, managing to appear full of hedonistic aromas and flavours and yet, remain focussed and linear.

In summary, these are wines that speak of their unique terroirs coupled with brilliant winemaking. PWS
